Yes. It's caused by opiates.

Many autistics have a higher tolerance for pain due to high levels of opiates due to undigested proteins from gluten and dairy foods. If you go on a gluten-free/dairy free diet, your pain sensitivity should become normal after a week or two.

Someone punched me on the arm a bunch of times till I got a big bruise and it barely hurt. I went on the gluten-free/dairy free diet and two weeks later I punched myself in the arm and it hurt 20 times more than it ever did before. Then I took a bunch of probiotic formulas and now I no longer need the diet. It is likely that an overgrowth of yeast and/or bacteria in the intestines inhibit the enzyme (called DPP-IV) that digests gluten and dairy. Taking DPP-IV enzymes (similar to lactose intolerant people taking lactase enzymes) should help but probiotics may be able to cure the problem. It's important to treat it because opiates cause a lot more problems than a higher tolerance for pain.

Could it not have something to do with the AS ability to concentrate more on things that they are doing and less on the pain that they are feeling. If i've got something to do and I do it then I tend to notice any pain i'm in a hell of a lot less pain. Its when I start actually noticing the blood that I start feeling pain. Just a suggestion.

I think that is a part of it too. I also notice that pain doesn't hurt as much when I'm doing something I enjoy.

I have no tolerance for pain; I avoid it whenever possible...;) I'm having to get used to insulin injections. Done right, they're no big deal. But twisting the needle once injected, is a real panty-twister..;)

I have a decently high pain tolerance. Actually, it kind of weird, I guess. Big things like when I fell(okay-jumped) over my child gate in my kitchen and hit my face on the tile, I nearly knocked out my two front teeth(which are now nicely discolored) and I'm pretty sure broke my septum(it's now much more crooked, you can see when you look into my nose. Which thankfully people don't do often...) that didn't actually hurt. I hardly felt it at all, it just freaked me out because I have a really big fear of losing my teeth.
What did bother me, was the awkward feeling afterward that can't be described by pain. I guess it was a sort of dull sensation. That's really the best I can think of. Like when you go to the dentist and they give you Novocain. It felt very similar to that. It drove me insane.
With labor, the pain was...BAD, but tolerable. I didn't get an epidural or anything. What did hurt me, terribly, was the pain/awkwardness after the birth.
Also- I often say that the only thing more painful than labor is stubbing your damn toe. While I'm definitely exaggerating with that, the little things tend to hurt me much more than the larger things.

I have low AND high pain tolerance. It depends on the sort of pain.

For example...if I get a headache I take painkillers and it still bothers me. If I get a stomach ache I will curl over in bed and feel like i'm dieing - [Not a joke ]

Once I ran into a brick wall and knocked myself to the ground...I didn't even feel it haha. I can pinch myself as hard as I can and it still doesn't hurt. Needles I barely feel, either.

I have a high physical pain tolerance and I'm gaining a high emotional pain tolerance too.

Is it an aspie trait to seem to have either a high pain tolerance or to feel pain differently then other people? I seem to be able to shrug off things that most people would be screaming over masochism excluded, and I'm just wondering if its an aspie trait?
Funny that. I'm the complete opposite. I have much lower pain tolerance than the majority.
My pain tolerance depends on my situation at the time. When I am hyper-focused on something, I usually don't feel any pain. Otherwise, my pain tolerance is very low.
I know how to cause myself to hyper-focus. If I can expect pain, I just ask for a moment to compose myself, and do the mind over matter thing. When I stop hyper-focusing, the residual soreness does not bother me much, because it is already part of my "current state of existence".

I have a high tolerance for pain that freaks my roommate out. But I would rather be punched in the face than tickled.
