Ok, that at least was pretty funny just because I grew up in a stuck up yuppy suburb where all the guys were supposed to be jocks, a lot of em weren't pushed real hard on the books, and guess what - I guarantee we're making future gym teachers out here faster than ITT cranks out overqualified waiters. If it wasn't all about the sports, the $64 pants, and who's who's older brother or sister or who who's parents have more money than it probably wouldn't have been so bad.

Lighten up!?! If everyone called him 'Stupid-Into-Pop-Culture Joe', then I wouldn't have a problem. It is the fact that he was called 'NT Joe' which is meant to imply that the average NT acts like him. Most people here seem to hate negative AS stereotypes, so it seems hypocritical to me that they find negative NT stereotypes so amusing.

Let me flip it around... If someone created a character called 'AS Bob' who was a nerd with no friends and no social skills, how would the other people here react to that?

Id probably laugh at it. There are already quite a lot of running jokes about nerds (some of whom happpen to be aspies) that are on the television. There seems to be an awful lot of aspies that are geeks too.

I dont think so. Where was the outrage at Mr bean or that aspie guy on Big Brother here in the UK who is a national figure of teasing. What about dumba and dumber and revenge of the nerds. It has been popular for a long time to make fun out of nerds, people that are specialise in things but lack common sense and/or those with disabilities that make them come across as a bit simple or missing something.

I was talking about the members of WrongPlanet being outraged, not people in general. I also wasn't talking about making fun of nerds in general, I was talking about specifically making fun of people with AS. I was also talking about the making fun of people with AS occuring here at these forums.

Like I said before I have no problem with making fun of people who can't think for themselves and are obsessed with pop culture and their appearance. I am opposed to making fun of NTs. There is a difference.

I'd be mild to moderately annoyed. I wouldn't lose any sleep, but I'd be rolling my eyes. Which is how I feel when other people on here (not anyone in this thread) post about how NT's are so much better than Aspies.

I don't understand why one group has to be considered "better" than the other. It's counterproductive, IMO. But I digress....

By all means, but don't forget that there are historical antecedents to take into consideration here. Also, what about flipping around the cumulative effects of historical antecedents pertaining to a culture of systemic marginalisation and scapegoating. That might not be so easy to do.

The characterisations of 'NT Joe' and 'NT Tracey' do not correlate to 'NT' to me, but they do correlate to the average and quotidien person I have known in the past. These self-same people have been the ones who have generally mocked, humiliated and generally denigrated me. This might not be anything to do with AS/ASD, since I am not DX'd, nonetheless, whether or not a formal DX comes into it, these robopathic heterobotic automata have been the principle constructs of oppression throughout my life.

I suspect that those who are definitively AS/ASD could relate something similar.

Looks to me that Bec is the one in the minority. Everyone else thinks its hilarious!

I found it pretty stupid, as well. General offensiveness aside, it's not even an accurate stereotype -- the vast majority of NTs are nothing like that.

I'd try to see both sides of the argument, but in this case it would make me squint.
