I am a non-genius. But my super natural focus has allowed me to get so obsessed with certain subjects that I think I have given out the impression I am a genius! Really, when you get to see how difficult it is for other people to know about the topic you chose to focus on, you get really surprised since it is actually very easy and fun to you, with time you find out that for most people it is neither easy nor fun.

And what do Aspies have that NTs don't? I've been working on this in my mind for a bit.

Resistance to peer-pressure
Knowledgable about our interests ((Have you met an Aspie that ISN'T?))
Intelligence
Hard-working
Solid ((we don't bother with what's unnecessary.))
Better perception. ((I'll bet you five bucks I can hear a pin drop on the wood table in the other room while you're talking to me.))

There's more.... let me think.... ((I'm horrible at making lists...))

Wow, I thought the whole resistance to peer pressure thing was just me. I had no idea it was an AS trait. I feel no peer pressure what-so-ever. Peer pressure doesn't even exist to me.

You've made a very good list HarraArial! :D

Aspies are not any better or worse than NT's. Just different. I'm tired of all the sweeping generalizations and insults thrown at NTs. Not all of them are lazy, unintelligent drones who constantly succumb to peer pressure (nor are all aspies unlike that, for that matter). It seems like a lot of you complain about NTs stereotyping and looking down upon us because our brains work differently, yet are talking about NTs in precisely that manner. This anti-NT sentiment will not bode well for us getting the respect and understanding we are striving for.

Well, I can't speak for everyone else, but I have a lot of anger built up inside of me from the way NT's have treated me all throughout my life. I know now that it is better to express my anger rather than bottling it up and I let it out by unleashing my inner frustrations. But as I unleash my anger, I learn more and more that NT's are not the stupid peons I used to think they were. There are a few that don't succumb to peer pressure and there some aspies do care what NT's think of them. However, my concern for what the NT's (or anyone else for that matter) think of me has diminished to the extent that it is almost non-existent now. They can think whatever they want about me, they can call me a freak (and they have) for the way my mind works if they like, they are entitled to their own opinions and rights. But they do not have the right or authority to control any aspect of MY life, I am the only one with that power. Their opinions of me, good or bad, will not stop me from achieving my goals.

I'm not saying this because I'm angry with you, I'm just saying it's not so easy for some of us to feel the way you do because of the way we've been treated. It's admirable that you take up for the NT's and some day I will be able to forgive them and take up for them too. But it is still difficult for me to so easily let go of the past. Expressing my anger is helping me to let go and it's the only way I know how.

Well, I'm a savant so insofar as I can accept Asperger's as separate from myself (which isn't much, especially since I'm uncertain whether I even have it) I have a very clear advantage that is likely connected.

But most of the time I don't attempt to separate the two. I'm proud of myself for my strengths and I believe I have Asperger's. That doesn't mean I have pride in my Asperger's just that I don't dwell on my weaknesses.

As for the anti NT viewpoint for myself when I think of NT jerks I'm thinking of the NTs that are shallow and cruel, but not ascribing those characteristics to all NTs.

Being social, making friendships, and not continually offending others.

Because most people with AS choose to live in their own world and be delusional. They would rather not face reality and try and change who they are.

I don't consider myself "delusional for that. the delusional person believes it is possible, or even optimal to *change* the way we've been irrevocably been born. also, an aspie can be social... albeit at a different level, we *can* make friendships, albeit fewer (although these few are usually closer than the NT's "acquaintances")

JWRed: just face reality, there's no good way we could "change who we are" just as an NT can't change who they are, and a schizo couldn't possible change who they are.

WRONG.

I know, because I have made amazing strides in becoming almost neurotypical. If you could speak to my psychologist, she would tell you the same thing. It takes an enormous effort. It takes years and a lot of failure to become almost neurotypical.

The first step in becoming almost neurotypical is to tell yourself the way you think and act is not beneficial to your overall happiness. That is difficult, painful, and something 99% of people with AS are not willing to do.

I understand that there are benefits to having AS. But the disadvantages clearly outweigh the advantages.

I agree 100%.
It's funny how some people here are so quick to point out the supposed "defects" that NTs have, all the while speaking of having Asperger's Syndrome as if it's somehow an ideal way to be.

Hey, there's absolutely nothing wrong with taking control and not letting what people say or do get to you. I'm just saying that you shouldn't look down upon a whole race of people just because some of them looked down upon you. There have been some aspies and people with various learning disabilities that have given me trouble too. I look at people as individuals, not under a certain classification.

By the way, Syd, what is that picture with the rocks supposed to mean?

Not all NTs but typical NTs. I think all the it they have are appropriate social skills. IQ means nothing to me. I think anyone can have a high IQ. So definitely social skills.

I have the ability to solve problems differently than the "norm" and can therefore solve problems others can't. I think differently.

I can focus and concentrate very well. When I am focusing, I can be much, much more productive than the average person. As a result of this, I know things others don't. When I am interested in something, I am passionately so.

I focus usually on details, and this gives me different knowledge than other people, not necessarily better, just different.

Society benefits in few ways from being uniform. Variety and diversity are necessary for advancement, among other things.
