I have a pair of shoes that I'll wear outside if I'm going to get them muddy or something (currently out of service due to large amount of cheese stuck on the bottom-don't ask), a pair I'll wear to school or semi-nice events, and then dress shoes for really fancy things.

I own more than one pair of shoes, and it's for a definite and logical reason.
- Sturdy shoes for everyday.
- Running shoes for... running. (They have to suit your gait and whatnot, and it's not good to wear out an expensive pair of shoes like that for everyday wear, so I don't.)
- Cycling shoes for... I'll leave this one up to you guys. (Cycling shoes are totally different; the soles are hard plastic and you screw pedal platforms into them so that you can clip in. It's not possible to actually wear them for anything other than sitting on a bicycle. For instance, you can't walk.)
- Sandals for trips to the river because the rocks will cut your feet if you aren't wearing something.

I also own spares of the latter two, but that is because I live in two homes and I honestly can't be bothered to carry random pairs of shoes in my backpack from one to the other throughout the school- and work-day, so I just have a pair at each place.

However, I totally agree that it's not necessary to have multiple pairs of shoes for one function - like "everyday" shoes that change to match the outfit, or "dress" shoes for each skirt you own or whatever. (I wouldn't know, I only own one skirt, and I think I *may* have a pair of dress shoes somewhere in the back of a closet... maybe.)

I generally have one pair of shoes, but I go through an adjustment period when I get a new pair. I'll switch back and forth between the new and the old for a few weeks until I can convince myself to throw out the old pair. When I was still living at home, my family teased me about treating my footwear like a security blanket. Unless something changes with the design or the material quality that I don't like, the new pair is almost always the same brand and style as the old pair. If I have to switch styles or brands, I rarely switch both at once.

My 10 yo aspie will only wear one pair of shoes and wears them till they need to be thrown away. They smell SOOO bad because of his sensory issues he wont wear socks.

In order to get him into a new pair of shoes I have the shoe store throw away this old ones once we purchase new ones so the temptation to wear the old ones isnt there.

I'd hate this. I always keep the old ones in case the new ones aren't as good/there's something wrong with them.

Trouble is, I have a hard time getting rid of old shoes because they always seem much better than the newer ones.

I have a pair of shoes for dressing smartly and a pair which are exactly the same but falling apart for riding in (not that I go particularly often), two pairs of identical trainers which I love but are falling apart and have almost lost their grip - I use them for running. I have a pair of everyday trainers which I can drive in and a pair of everyday trainers which are more comfortable but not good to drive in, a pair of army boots from when I was in the Army cadets, I now use them for working at the stables in (I used to have a work placement there, now I only go very occasionally). I have a pair of walking boots...for walking in of course :D and a pair of wet-suit type shoes for use in the sea.

That's rather a lot!

I probably have like 10 pairs of shoes but consistently wear just two or three. Same with most of my clothes actually. I have a closet full of clothes but only wear about 10% of it. I think that's the way it is with most people though.

i have 4 pairs of shoes that i actually wear. ( i have several that i never wear, or that are too worn out to wear and i plan to scrap for artsy stuff)

1. my z-coils that i absolutely adore... i wear these most of the time, when i'm not at home.

(mine are just like these except velcro instead of laces)

2. my church shoes (black platform sandals), which i wear to.. well.. church.
3. my rubber clogs, which i wear while dog-sitting, so the dogs don't eat my z-coils.
4. my ninja shoes (a la naruto) that my mom made me. :D i wear these when i'm cosplaying or just around the house, cause they're crazy comfy and warm :D (i also have a pair of actual slippers that i wear.. i donno.. do slippers count as shoes??)

It seems like the driving force for most of the responses is functionality. Boots for snow, sandals for warm days, sneakers for running. I follow this pattern exactly. I have several pairs of shoes, all of which will be worn until they fall apart, just like their predecessors.

The striking thing is that few people mention having extra pairs for the style. That makes sense on WP. I expect most folks are like me in being sensitive to aesthetic issues but blind as a bat to "style" and "fashion".
