My empathy levels seem to vary. The only way I truely feel empathy is if I've undergone the same/similar experience, and I get a kinda similar feeling if I try to understand how the person's experience would feel to me if I underwent it. If I don't try to do that I usually don't feel anything, though there have been exceptions.

Ouch, me too, but I end up feeling like a phony if I just act like I think I should instead of how I'm really feeling, which can can lead to disappointment in the other party.

I pretty much do what I feel is right. I don't know. :S When I do do something that is "wrong", I'm often surprised to find that I experience no guilt. :S I don't know why. This usually doesn't stop me from pursuing what I feel is right however.
