Well that was f**king crazy. I felt that I could only identify about 1 in 15 of the 'emotion' pictures. But I still scored 50% somehow. Often the picture would disappear so quickly that I would still be trying to determine the emotion. Then I'd forget the face before being able to make a decision causing me to take a complete guess as all the information required had long since departed my mind. My short term memory really is horrendous. I felt the 'happy' faces were easiest to identify, but all the subjects appeared to have such a low intensity of emotion that most of them looked neutral to me. I think the fact that the expressions are also obviously forced for the purposes of the picture and not genuine also had an effect on my ability to determine the emotion.
As for the gender test, I scored 75%, almost perfectly normal. I found a few of them quite easy to identify, but the majority looked androgynous and it seemed like the the same picture would appear a dozen times in a row, which was very confusing. :? I was very suprised to have scored 75%. VERY surprised. My score seems too high to have been purely a result of luck, but I felt like 90% of my answers were a total stab in the dark.

And the rest:

You had a score of 5 / 8 for unusual experiences. The average is 3.4.

You had a score of 8 / 8 for social anxiety. The average is 3.4

I gave up with the test because it got repetitive with the same faces and didn't know how much longer it would go. I didn't feel like I had much trouble distinguishing them, other than "anger" vs. "disgusted", which felt ambiguous.

You had a score of 7 / 8 for unusual experiences. The average is 3.4.
You had a score of 8 / 8 for social anxiety. The average is 3.4

You were able to discriminate 83% of the face genders. Based on the results we have so far, the average person who takes this test correctly identifies 78% of the genders.

You were able to discriminate 58% of the facial expressions. Based on the results we have so far, the average person who takes this test correctly identifies 66% of the emotions.

4/8 for questions regarding unusual experiences
8/8 for questions regarding social anxiety (not surprising there)
68% of the questions right in recognizing gender (that test was awful)
67% of the questions right in regards to facial expressions (they showed the same face multiple times!)

It was hard because the faces were so fast but.
Unusual Experiences 5 out of 8
Social Anxiety 4 out of 8
Face Gender 65%
Judging Emotions 62%

Well think of it this way. "Happy" faces are fairly easy to identify since it's the only positive emotion and fairly distinct. So let's assume that you got about 80% of those correct. That alone would get you 20% of the 25% of the test that makes up those faces.

Now for the remaining three expressions, you totally bombed and had to resort to guessing. You would know that those faces aren't "happy" so you eliminated that possibility. That leaves a 33% chance of getting it right on the remaining 75% of the questions. So you could bank another 25% just by stabbing blindly at the keyboard.

20+25=45

And there you have your answer for how you overperformed on this test.

I had my two NT parents take this test. While I stood watching my mother, positioned behind the chair at my desk, it appeared so much easier than when I had tried.

I decided to take the test again, only this time sitting further back from the screen than before. I encountered a few technical difficulties - 2 faces in the gender test and 1 in the emotion test didn't show, so I had to guess blindly for those.

Quote:
You were able to discriminate 90% of the face genders.

(85% scored on first attempt) Not bad. After judging the faces, I was worried I'd actually score lower this time.

Quote:
You were able to discriminate 73% of the facial expressions.

(62% scored on first attempt) Woohoo! That's a big difference. Was it confidence, familiarity with the test, or the further distance from the screen that made the most difference?

My mother scored 68% / 45% (gender / emotion) but she did have extreme difficulty following the on screen instructions. My father was able to follow the on screen instructions and scored 78% / 63% (gender / emotion). Neither are as competent with computers as I am, and neither have been diagnosed AS.

I did the test again, this time the third time around and had my fingers this time primed and ready to press the right buttons

Unusual experiences:
You had a score of 0 / 8 for unusual experiences. The average is 3.4.

Social Anxiety:
You had a score of 7 / 8 for social anxiety. The average is 3.4

Face Gender:
You were able to discriminate 68% of the face genders. Based on the results we have so far, the average person who takes this test correctly identifies 78% of the genders.

Face Expressions
You were able to discriminate 40% of the facial expressions. Based on the results we have so far, the average person who takes this test correctly identifies 66% of the emotions.
(that was 5% down on last time so it appears I am really impaired when it comes to facial expressions)

(all these tests were done for the first time)
My Sister in the other hand got 90% for face gender and 90% for face expressions the first time around but amazingly 8 out of 8 for unusual experiences and 3 out of 8 for social anxiety.
(the unusal experiences did not surprise me because she is an avid believer in the paranormal and claims she has had many paranormal experiences)

My Niece scored 78% for face genders and 88% for face expressions, but 6 out of 8 for unusual experiences and 3 out of 8 for social anxiety.

My Brother scored 68% for face gender and 50% for face expressions but 4 out of 8 for unusual experiences and 3 out of 8 for social anxiety.

Er - how is this test supposed to work? The faces only flashed up for about 1 second then disappeared. There is no way I can do this without studying the pictures first!! !! !!

Normal brains have little trouble processing emotions in less than a second.

If it takes you more, that indicates a problem. Hence, the test is valid.

Heh, Dragonfly_Dreams, my results were quite similar to yours.

You had a score of 7 / 8 for unusual experiences. The average is 3.4.
You had a score of 8 / 8 for social anxiety. The average is 3.4

You were able to discriminate 88% of the face genders.
You were able to discriminate 77% of the facial expressions.

I also thought a lot of the faces were pretty androgynous and neutral. I know for a fact that I gave different answers for the same picture at times, too.

And it's true that tests like these attract people who already have issues with the subject, so I'm always skeptical of the averages.

I have trouble processing anything in less than a second.
