If all goes according to plan, I'll have my license in just over a week. I'm 22.

My aunt didn't get her license to drive until she was in her 40s! I think it's more important to take your time, & do it your own way than to worry about the statistics. Btw, here in CA, for a long time my driving record went against me because I didn't get my license as early as some others. Meaning I wasn't as experienced, but now the opposite is true! So while I wasn't out there driving with other teens may have caused me some issues with insurance, things have balanced out, & when/if I reach old age, not driving early will mean I don't have points against me. Not sure why that's a factor though.


I hated driving when I first started to learn. I was easily panicked by anything & everything. Now I enjoy driving especially long distances. I don't care for driving in town just because there are so many things that happen in an instant (cars cutting me off, drivers not paying attention/distracted, running red lights or stop signs, etc). I think it's ironic that Itime vs some others' expectations!

Hey, this is a states rights issue. Believe me, you don't want the federal government instituting one blanket set of standards.



Drivers license, ack. Painful history for me, lots of shame. That's long past, though; for the past 7+ years, I've driven successfully in a country that has highway sections w/o speed limits, and where driver behavior makes driving in Manhattan feel warm-fuzzy.

I heard lot of people don't drive but I find it hard to believe because I see cars on the road so its obvious lot of people do drive. But if you live in a big city and there it public transportation and it gets you everywhere and it's reliable, you don't need a car. You will need one if you want to travel but there are people who travel by bus or train or plane. You can't rent a car unless you have a driver's lisence but you need a car to get your driver's lisence because you need to pass the driving test. You can't even buy a car unless you have your lisence. You would have to buy from another consumer but I don't know if you need your driver's lisence to borrow money from the bank to buy a car.

Driving license is obtainable at age 18 where I live, though people are allowed to do the tests before their 18th birthday. I'm 20 and haven't tried so far and I'm not sure I can drive anyway.

I tried the first time when I was 19 and failed because the instructor made me nervous, the car I was driving was really big and I was pulling out of the driveway which was as narrow as a fast food drive thru and ran over the curb and proceeded to run over the curb into the grass.

She told me to turn around and said "Failed!"

Second time around, went to a new place and there was no narrow drive thru and the person didn't make me feel nervous so it went okay after that.

Passed.

I was 20 back in mid-March when I got my driver's license. I live in the state of California, and I believe you can get your permit at age 15 1/2, but you got to be 16 to be able to drive.

Well, I WAS also starting out with credit, and my DAD cosigned the loan. But, back then, you didn't need a license to BUY, only to DRIVE!

I got my permit at age 22.
The age you can start taking lessons is 18 over here.
Passed my theory exam on my 22nd birthday.
I had studied real hard and was one of the few with 0 wrong answers out of 50.
A few months later after 8 months of lessons i took my exam.
That ride also went flawlessly fortunately.

The driving unstructor had pissed me off during my lessons going shopping and stuff during my high paid lessons.
Often times id pay for 2 hours and get like 1 hour and like 20-30 minutes.
He wasn't too strict about the time like i later heard from, from others who took lessons with another company.
On top of that he was also more expencive than the rest lol...
But i had no choice as he was the only one giving automatic lessons in the area.

In some places, you can carry alcohol, etc... In some places you can have a RADAR/LASER detector! In SOME places you can have a police radio. In some places you can have a gun. In some places you can turn right on red. Each place has different speed limits.

I got mine 2 months ago at 17. First try! I was very excited.

Those from the USA here are the 50 different driving ages and rules each state like in Aus has different rules.

I think 18 is a good age but if not 17 no younger it is too young even the states with 17 here in aus have higher accident rates than victoria where i live and it is 18. Vic has the toughest rules in Australia and whilst some teens dont like it most dont care. We have good transport here and many leave it untril they are over 20 to get their licence the rules are relaxed then although you still have to be on probation.

Wow things sure do change over the years. It was 15 when I was in high school and 14 1/2 for a learner's permit.

Wow! She musta been through a lot of crap! And I thought I was pushing it. Yeah, know what you mean by panicking at everything, part of the reason I really do NOT want to drive. I *know* that it's "all in the head" and stuff, but really how can someone say that when we're talkin' a ton of steel lumbering along the roads with others...? Never thought about the points aspect of it, when looking at all my friends, nearly ALL of them have racked up some points. Factor in the savings I'm reaping from gas/insurance/car payment bills, and I don't really have the motivation to run out and get a cash sucking machine. I don't think I care about a license anymore, and I can see I'm not alone. Cool thing bout finding this place, everything's "normal" if there was such a thing, ha!

I was 15 and haven't stopped since. I feel like I live in my car, sometimes. I like driving. I like the freedom that having a car gives me. I've been driving for 25 years, now! Yeah!

I got my license the day I turned 16 and my Mom said I "kept the roads hot" ever since. I was practicing parallel parking between two sawhorses at the age of 12 and couldnt wait for the sweet freedom it provided. I got a 1967 Mustang Convertible as a early graduation present. (I was a 16 year old senior) and LOVE to drive to this day. I'v driven back and forth across the country so many times I'v lost count, have driven the Alaskan Highway, and my daughter hit 23 states and Mexico before she was a year old.
I LOVE driving and can depress myself when I think of what my life will be like if I ever loose the ability or means.

Oh Yeah, and I have "lived in my car" at various points in my life.
