Childhood obsession?

Whilst a child I spent hours and hours a day drawing pictures. This was just one of my many peculiar habits. Another thing I did was go on and on about something that really drove the grownups crazy too because they wanted me to stop talking.
Later I took some art classes in college and did so well in them, I was advised to major in art and become an artist but my confidence was so low I thought it would be pointless, majoring in art.

As a child Dinosaurs, Lego, Star Wars, music and drawing.

i was obsessed with patterns mainly.

i liked to derive patterns from what i saw in my world.
i liked to think of ways of explaining those patterns to myself, so i could think of new patterns.

i liked all that i saw that had some pattern derivation possibility.

but i liked to close my eyes and apply ideas to new, and as yet non existing patterns that i will never see in real life.

that still consumes me.

my minor interest was jet airliners and sound systems.

i learned all i could about jet engines (the high bypass turbofans, and turbojets) and drew up plans for making miniature versions that i could modify and improve.

but i never had the workshop at that age to try anything for real.
now i know that it is a lot of work and i will not try yet. i might when i retire.

i also liked acoustic physics after i heard some JBL 4350's in a studio.

i wanted to make speakers that sounded as good (they cost about $50,000 a pair back then)

i made many versions of studio monitors with very good specifications.

my best self designed and built speakers are not as good as the 4350's, but they are close.

i finally was able to buy a pair of 4350's a few years ago, and, even though they are made in 1978, they are far better than any speaker i ever have heard that was built since then, and i have researched so many.

you can play a massive orchestral piece on high volume, and if someone so much as sniffles on stage, you can not only hear it, but locate it due to the incredible stereo spatial imagery and dynamic ambience.

on the 1812 overture, they will smash windows (when the cannons go off) if i do not keep them at a reasonable volume.

with popular rock music, they reveal every instrumental track in isolation, and it is a new experience to hear a favorite song on them.

i always wanted to emulate that clarity and transient ability with my constructions, but i never really had the money when i was a child to buy the expensive speaker cones needed ($1,800 each for the woofers alone, and i needed 4).

i could tell the sound of every car engine and say what car it was without looking, and i could tell every airplane engine by it's sound too, and allways my friends would ask me to look away and say what type of plane it was.

(they knew the models, because i brought them pictures and described them before hand.)

i loved the sound of a 727 taking off.
they almost ripped the concrete out of the runway as they lifted.

they went so steeply up and i was majorly impressed that such an old plane was so powerful.

so i was also obsessed with 727's for a while.

I was obsessed with reading fictional literature and playing the violin. I guess I still am.

I identify with what you're saying there, I've had similar experiences. I have had many special interests over the years. They were enjoyable up to a point, but then I became so obsessed by them that it took the enjoyment out of my life, I was hardly doing anything else! For instance, I spent a whole holiday taking notes of car number plates instead of relaxing, enjoying the scenery and the beach, etc.; the result was that I was still stressed at the end of the holiday.

I think that the key is to not carry the special interest to the point where it becomes a source of suffering rather than enjoyment. Also, getting too engrossed in a special interest might make you neglect other areas of your life, e.g. you might stop doing your job well and eventually get the sack, or you might neglect your children and they would suffer.

my obssesions have never changed really, music & reading being my main ones and still are.

I am obsessed with so many things; my main obsession is cartooning, different types of cartoon characters, different types of movie characters, and different types of characters from books.

Almost every "DragonBall Z", "DragonBall", and "DragonBall GT" villain, including Frieza, Cell, Bibidi, Babidi, King Cold, Dr. Gero, Dr. Myuu, Baby, King Piccolo, Piano (King Piccolo's pterodactyl-humanoid son/henchman), Garlic Jr., Garlic Jr.'s henchmen, and so many others.

Wormtail, Dobby, Winky, and Kreacher from "Harry Potter".

Smeagol and Deagol from "Lord of the Rings".

The characters from "Everybody Loves Raymond".

The characters from "Seinfeld".

Maldis and Scorpius from "Farscape".

Almost every character from "Pokemon", including Pikachu, Charmander, Mew, Mewtwo, Ash Ketchum, and Team Rocket.

The characters from "Courage the Cowardly Dog".

The characters from "Dexter's Laboratory".

The characters from "Ed, Edd 'N Eddy", especially Edd/Double D.

Vilgax from the "Ben 10" cartoon and Eon from the "Ben 10: Race Against Time" movie.

I. R. Baboon from "I Am Weasel" and "Cow and Chicken".

Almost every character from "Digimon", especially Motimon and Tentomon, Izzy, their Digi-Destined kid.

when I was a kid I was obsessed with binomial nomenclature- I knew Linneus' Systema Naturae almost by heart ;p always walking around and giving latin names of bugs and animals (I wasn't interested in plants for some reason). of course everybody thought I was makin it up ;p

later I got more into astronomy and geography, studied maps like crazy. when I got a little older I studied books for police investigators about techniques of interrogations and how to tell when a person is lying- I guess I just desperately wanted to learn how to be a good liar cause I was extremely truant and could never hide it, my dad could say I looked guilty straight away LOL

HAHA! One of my online video game nicknames was IRprillix in respect to baboon. I always thought he was better then weasel

I have a heavy array of obsessions that have changed over the years. Infact, I will only name a few.

1) The first would be Disney Movies such at the Little Mermaid, The Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast.
2) Leonardo DiCaprio which lasted for 5 years after Titanic
3) Lord of the Rings, which I got dumped by another Aspie for watching at at the movies 5 times.
4) Jack Sparrow as he is so hot and funny
5) My latest is Inuyasha as I find his character to be quite amuzing and reminds me of a friend.
