I hardly think trolls could have poor self esteem. It would almost require good self esteem and insensitivity to negative feedback and social pressure to keep up with this. At least the lack of interest for others views and social conformity would be consistent with an aspie-trait.

I think sometimes people here respond bluntly with what they feel is the truth and that is interpreted as trolling. This I would agree is an aspergers trait.

If they did that on an ordinary forum often enough, the troll label would very fast be put upon them.

Point 1:

Neuroman wins. It's well established that low self esteem can lead to excessive attention grabbing. ANY attention, even if it is bad, satisfies the need, and the behavior continues. High-esteem people are confident and don't need to look for attention, it generally comes their way naturally.

Point 2:

True enough, but this is no ordinary forum, is it?
And perhaps those other forums shouldn't be so hasty to boot them out or apply the troll label... after all, we all want peace, happiness, and understanding do we not?

I honestly can't see any trolls here. I don't see anyone behaving in such a way, not even happeh. That was something different, I think, the product of a singular mind. Some people post a lot without a lot of content, yes, but I generally find it amusing, not annoying.

Maybe there are trolls here but I can't see them. I'm generally pretty accepting of behavior, maybe it's me though. Just 0.03.

The guy isn't a troll. (happeh or whatever).

Trolls post things with the intent to stir up a storm.
He probably isn't intending to rark up anyone.

The main letgoblues problem was deciding if he was acting dumb on purpose (trolling) or being a regular no-brainer all the time.

And I am against a trolling forum. There's a reason trolling is a bannable offence on 98% of message boards.

I followed that link because I too don't know what trolling is and got the above definition.

This is ridiculous! Whether someone is considered a "dumbass" or whether their posts are considered "idiotic" is purely the opinion of a particular reader or readers.

How can I know for sure that readers don't consider me a "dumbass" or my posts "Idiotic"?

I can't and therefore I have no control over whether I would be considered a troll or not.

The above definition seems to me to just thow insults and poor value judgements at people who may not even be aware they are "pissing people off".

Asperval, I'm sure if this applied to you, you would know it. Same thing with pretty much everybody else.

As for the separate forum for trolls, that's not going to stop them. I've had problems with other members on a different discussion board before, and even setting up a place where this particular person could be random and spam didn't help. If a troll is determined to troll, they will troll wherever they want to, despite what others may say. The only thing that can stop one of the more persistent trolls is a permanent ban.

One main problem with setting up a troll forum would be that it's probably only trolls who would visit it. And, I could be wrong, but I think troll's targets are usually non-trolls who they can get a rise out of.

It would end up being a trollish Random Fun forum in the end.

I can't and therefore I have no control over whether I would be considered a troll or not.

It's certainly true that lack of social skills can look a lot like trolling. Some of my first posts to anywhere were when I still didn't entirely know what communication was for. So I would fix on a word like "art", go to an art forum, and then type something I'd heard someone say, like "Why do people draw colored squares and call it art? I think that's stupid."

But real trolling does exist. And when it's done skillfully, it can absolutely destroy a forum. Trolling (which I think of as in fishing, "trolling for flames") is when a person deliberately posts flamebait (something likely to inspire nasty, impassioned replies) for the purpose of inciting fights and for no other purpose.

I once knew a troll (self-admitted, later on) who posed as two different people, and completely took over a forum with the vociferous arguments between these two online characters. He later admitted he'd done so just to laugh at everyone responding to him. It's a rare troll that admits it like that, but he did admit it, apologize, and become a regularly contributing member of the group.

An example of trolling is walking into a Jewish forum and saying that the Holocaust didn't happen. Just as a really big, nasty example. Trolling is designed to be as offensive as possible and to push people's buttons. (Although there is also subtle trolling that is designed to walk the line between appropriate and inappropriate so that the person never quite can get thrown out but always manages to stir things up. That is the worst kind, worse than the blatant stuff.)

And yes, idiotic and a**hole are value judgements, and people may not always get it right, but there is such a thing as trolling, and it's not a good thing. Generally though if you have to wonder whether you are or not, you're probably not trolling, because trolling is deliberate.

Oh, also, there is one thing that can also happen.

Some trolls will pose as simply socially clueless people as a means of managing to stay on the board.

Then it becomes a real problem for moderators.

I remember being approached by such a person -- years ago, which is why I don't mind mentioning this in the present day -- who was really good at appearing, in public areas, as just any other autistic person, but then in private (which in those forums couldn't be monitored through the forum itself) he'd be trying to lure people into his twisted sexual predation crap. And there was another one like that who tried to convince autistic people to commit suicide.

2b. Noun
An aesthetically repulsive person, often has terrible social skills, usually a woman. See Troglodyte.

2c. Noun
An old, unattractive gay man who hits on young men, and cannot seem to understand that they want nothing to do with him.

3a. Verb
To fish by dragging bait behind a moving motor-boat.

3b. Verb
To cruise for immediate sexual pleasure without commitment. Often characterized by an older man, seeking a younger man, or any man for immediate, often anonymous sexual contact.

4. Noun
A joke disguised as an outrageously stupid statement or question, intended to trap people into believing it is serious.

5. Verb
To use acid and ectasy simulataneously. See trolling.
(Comes from ‘Tripping’ on acid, and ‘Rolling’ on ecstasy)

These are other definitions of trolls taken from the Urban dictionary link.

Which one of these definitions are we talking about?

I tend to think of it as a metaphorical version of the fishing thing.

Instead of trolling for fish, trolls troll for nasty responses.
