Fnord- you are very perceptive. I do "down-play" myself a lot more than I should. Damn esteem!

Apatura- your avatar is one of my favorite portraits by Sargent... EVAH! The one and only time I was in New York I made it a point to see it in person. Truly stunning, right along with the story behind it. Come to think of it, Madame X may well have been an obsession of mine. Huh....

I think we type like how we talk. Not quite perfect english, but more close to it than others. We also don't pick up so much on large amounts of slang. We also have a tendency to want to explain something in an orderly way, and if the medium in which you intend to explain something through is a language, then its best to use it correctly. That right there probably was not perfect English, but rather, dry English maybe?

I have also found strange stuttering in my typing, also stutter with with my speech.

Oh and can anyone read this?

j00*4!23*73I-I*I=()()I_*I=()()!2*!234I)1IV6*7I-I15'd00d111one!! !!uno!!11!!!11!! !!111!!

hmm, its been a long time since I have done anything like that.

I know that my publisher enjoys they way I talk and seems to think it translates well into my column. I can't really tell so I defer to her better judgment.

WTF? It does mean something, I knew one person that could read that almost as quickly as usual writing, and how I wrote like that is a sort of I_337 I came up with too.

I realized I misspelled something in it.
I=()()!2
should be
I=()!2

For is not spelled Foor.

I use spell check compulsively. On NT forums I don't always bother but around aspies I feel stupid having any spelling errors.

I will admit, this has a lot less annoying tendencies than other forums, but I am still annoyed! The people here aren't perfect, and they do make mistakes (which is okay), but some mistakes are just unbelievable to me. I gave an example in an earlier thread, but I'll do it again.

People here (and everywhere) tend to use acronyms incorrectly from time to time (a lot). They will do something like, "I am AS" to say they have Asperger's Syndrome. This is clearly not correct. They of course also do, "He's AS", or "She's HFA", and further such incorrect usages of acronyms. Sure, sure.. It makes it easier. I mean... You don't have to type, "She has HFA", you save just a bit of time!

Another one that I commonly see around here is "dx" for diagnosis. That isn't an acronym or even an abbreviation. I'm no English major, or even minor (since my education is actually quite limited), but I also have recognized quite a lot of bad grammar here as well. Run on sentences, lack of commas, poor usage of colons, et cetera.. Oh well though. People are people, even if they are autistic.

I'm quite sure I make a lot of mistakes myself. I don't mind mistakes in others or myself, as long as they are TRYING to make what they are typing easy to read. Paragraphs, punctuation, proper capitalization of words (not capitalization for emphasis, like Randomly <- example). What matters the most is that it is easy to read and identify what the user is trying to say.

Guilty. I do that because it feels odd typing that I have AS. (Much like typing I have femaleness/bisexuality would.) With the word autism, I can type I am autistic, but with AS, I'd have to use the word Aspergian (or an aspie), which is more grating than using poor grammar.

Yeah, agree millie. It's no big deal. I have read quite a few posts, and have never come across one that was so badly written, that the meaning disapeared. And I'm far from educated in english. Those who are so perfect, can also very easy read trough the mistakes and get the meaning.

I hate people who type liik3 thiis it pisses me off. I think 1337 speak is quite cool, though.

I think that the good spelling, grammer etc. thing is a trait of Asperger's (hyperlexia, it's called).

There are plenty of errors to be found in this website. After I make a post, I usually proofread it and edit if I need to. Of course that is built into my nature---I taught English for nineteen years on the high school level, and I have also taught English on the university level. Now, I am a gifted intervention specialist at the high school. I am sure I have some errors out there. Afterall, these posts aren't meant to be formal.

While my spelling is reasonable (thank god for spell checkers), grammar causes me problems. I'm a visual thinker and words often seem unwieldy to me. I have problems putting the parts of a complex sentence into the correct order. As part of my job writing software I have to write help documentation and I sometimes struggle with this. For example yesterday I could not decide which of these two phrases (if either!) was correct:

"Click the appropriate word on the list"

or

"Click the appropriate word in the list"

Things like that bug me. I worry that people will read my documentation and think the software is bad due to my grammar.
