I am.

But not because I'm autistic.

... I really can't say anything. I promised Quatermass I woun't promote violence anymore on WP, and if I open my mouth here I might inadvertantly break that promise.

Mike Stanton a special needs teacher, father to an autistic teenager, author and National Autistic Society council member writes on his blog www.actionforautism.co.uk

Quote:
I have very real objections to Action for Children’s treatment of autism in this ad campaign.

In all their other work they quite rightly see troubled children as victims of poverty, abuse, neglect and discrimination. They provide services for young adults because one of their slogans is “For as long as it takes.” They do not sign a person off at 18 or 21 if the damage has not been repaired.

But with autistic children they seem to think that it is the autism that is solely responsible for the child’s behaviour and ignore the injustice and abuse that compound the natural difficulties that an autistic child might face even in the best of worlds. All the problems are located within the child and they are all ascribed to the autism monster.

The angry child and the frightened child are the same person. The anger and the fear are united in the experience of the autistic child. The anger is born of fear and the cure for anger is to take away the fear. But in Dan’s story we are shown a frightened boy inside an autism monster and the cure is to take away the monster of autism and trample it into the ground.

Disturbing as this campaign is, I am even more disturbed by thought that, if this is how Action for Children think about autism, what is the impact of this way of thinking on the way they respond to autistic children in their care?

Shiva writes on Biodiverse Resistance http://biodiverseresistance.blogspot.co ... arity.html

Quote:
A red line (which seems to represent the charity) takes the monster/child out of the urban landscape and into a green field, looking like typical English countryside with trees in the background - then literally tears the monster into pieces, leaving the child inside "free". The monster re-forms in the grass next to the boy, and starts to rise up - presumably to "eat" him again - but the boy tramples it into the ground.

I'm happy to see that some people have said this advert is fine. It doesn't say autism makes you a monster. It says, truthfully, that autism can make you angry, and anger makes you a monster and that autistic people can be helped with their anger and their emotions, and become nice, happy autistic people.
I think too many people on here have that horrible thing about being part of a minority that makes you interpret everything anyone says about that minority in an offensive way.

As for the 'bullies' thing - the advert implies that people would say something rude to him, (as people do - life is like that- people have got to deal with it!) and he would completely overreact and punch them. That's not a good thing. :|

Yes, I do agree on that.

However, the one thing I agree with the militants on thou is how the NTs will react. Obviously, many autistics can and should work on their more disruptive behaviors, however, let us not forget how others play a role. My life between about 6-15 yrs old was a horror show of verbal and sometimes physical abuse from the community at large. Yes, some of it was "My Fault" for not acting "apporprately", but alot of it is the hate and bigotry from society as well.

During and since HS, my behavior is better, but the hate isn't. It's simply quelled due to the fact that I don't give the idiots the fuel they need to start a social riot.

This blog isn't really targeted towards Autistics, which is why many are missing the point. It's targeted to NTs who want someone to justify their inner biogtries and fear towards those with mental differences...

And more remarkably, at Dan's school recently a 13 year old girl with special needs was arrested, handcuffed and thrown into a police cell after arguing with a teacher...

From http://the-newrepublic.blogspot.com

that is ridiculous, there needs to be something done about that.
no way should a kid with severe LD and behavioral difficulties be cuffed and arrested.
as she was at a special school, she should have had guidelines written up to say what types of restraining can be used-if any.

one of the residents am live with who has mild ld and is probably more able than a lot of users here beated a GMP police woman who had come to kick her door in as she locked herself in and was banging to set am off.
she also tore out a big chunk of the ladies' hair and got treated like the victim-pinned to her bed but no arrest,if someone who knew exactly what she was doing can get off with this so lightly [she went around telling everyone afterwards how she beat the policelady up and got away with it] why was a child with severe difficulties treated like a very able minded criminal?
very wrong.

It seems to me no matter what the charity, they always seem to make arses of themselves and make autistism look like a disease.

They just should've asked the autism community for their opinions before blundering in...

Dan has every right to state his opinions and feelings about his autism; but so have we...

What??

Am I interpretting this right? It's all the autistic's kids fault if people are being cruel? It seems bullies are in control of these "charities".

Also noticed current trend of today and lesson is if you are bullied, don't fight back or you will get punished. The harrasser is the one who complains and the one who defended themselves or someone else gets punished.

Sorry but it all seems backwards to me. This implies the ones creating these standards now want to hurt others whom they deem of as vulnerable and get no penalties for it.

Isn't there a name for that?

I saw the advertisement on television on Sunday night. Unless I had already read objections to it on autism community websites and blogs, I would not have seen any objection to it. To me it conveys the idea that Action for Children is a charity which helps children in distress or have various problems. It does not specialise in autsm. I don't think it would make anyone who sees it more hostile or negative to autistic people than they were previously.

I don't know how much impact television advertisements make on people who see them. They make very little on me. It was only by chance that I saw that advertisement. If people watch it with close attention and then post it on their blog or website it would have a greater effect on them than if they had watched it while paying it only cursory attention.

Sometimes I think that people like getting indignant or outraged about whatever issue pushes
their buttons. But maybe I'm too laidback.

1) Make autism look like a huge terrible disease
2) Convince everyone that it must be stopped, cured and/or treated
3) ????
4) PROFIT!
