I am definately a dog person. I was a cat person growing up, but my first pet outside my folks house was a dog and I'm a convert. I love ALL animals, I seem to have a certain bond with every strange animal I meet. Often I get told "oh, my (insert type of animal here) has never been like this before, they're usually shy/aggressive/aloof" when I meet someone else's pet (dog, cat, bird, bunny, you name it). But I love dogs!
Dogs don't need to make conversation, they are loyal to you and are always happy to see you. Yes, they require attention, but what's wrong with that? It's gets me outside of my head for a bit, and I know, deep down, that that is necessary and good for me. When I take good care of my pet, I take better care of myself. And playing rough (I've had pit bulls) is FUN! It's a wonderful release of energy. My dogs always went wherever I did, be it car rides or long walks. They have always been my 'people radar' - if my dog didn't like someone, I avoided them. And none of my pit bulls ever stank - they usually smelled like grass or hay because they loved playing in the yard. And they had amazing learning capabilities. They are more people than people to me, if you get my meaning.
Still, I don't think anyone who doesn't want a pet should be pressured into getting one. If you don't want one, don't get one. There is no reason to make yourself (or the pet!) miserable because someone else thinks 'you oughtta.'
