I hate supermarkets - crowded, with bright lights, too much stuff, play bad music and I hate going near certain sections because they smell, and sometimes they have those free sample things which also smell. Also people tend to be really inconsiderate - they push into you or the block the way because they're busy chatting with their friends and their kids are running all over the place. I usually try to go in off hours and I know where everything is so I can get what I need and get out quickly, though today I made the mistake of going when it's busy and they decided to change everything around and it was awful.

Not to me. I get in a right muddle with self-service tills. I fear that the queue behind me are waiting for me to finish, and are judging me about how fast I'm going. (I take forever, because I'm so slow with counting the right money). Also, I'm very clumsy too, and when I'm shoving everything into a carrier bag I drop the items on the floor and look in a right fluster.

I think nothing nothing of eye-contact and small talk with a cashier - I'll rather that than thinking everyone's watching me when I'm struggling on the self-service machines.

Same here! I have it all memorized, and unless somebody does something different, it goes:
Cashier: "Hi, how are you?"
Me: "Fine, and you?"
Cashier: "Fine thank you. Find everything alright?"
Me: "Yes, thank you."
Cashier: Plastic ok?"
Me: "No, I have a shopping bag."

Followed by good-bye, have a nice day, etc. Sometimes I wish I didn't have to go through these inanities, but at least they are predictable..

My mom goes shopping for me (I usually just need one or two things) unless she can go WITH me, then I go too. I get overwhelmed and melt down in the the grocery store, so it's a bad idea for me to go by myself.

I this is why I think my father has Aspergers. If we drive up to our super market and the parking lot is jam packed he gets pissed off and turns around to return after 7:00 PM when the store quiets down. He can't handle crowds of people or crowded parking lots choked with cars. I always offer to run in get the stuff we need then go through the automated check out line which is usually empty. But he always says that he did not want to put me through that type of stress.

My father is a Vietnam era combat vetran. He always says he would rather fight in a balls out firefight than go to the center of a crowd of people. He says its less stressful for him. He claims when he is under fire he feels more in control of the situation. 8O

Could your father have PTSD? Was he like that before his service?
