family making fun of myself and disabled people
Things were a lot better before political correctness: There was a lot more decency, instead all the namby-pamby, bleeding-heart muck which has destroyed society now.
I dislike those terms too, as Asians are OK. In Asia, that is. They should not be allowed to invade our country, as they've been doing for the last twenty years. I am sick and tired of seeing them doing unskilled work at the shopping centre down the road, when I have had my working hours drastically reduced. And I have had a gutsful of waiting in the heat for buses which are ten minutes late, whilst some African "refugee" zooms past in a late-model car.
So you can understand that I hate political correctness with a passion. Why should "n****r" be reduced to "the N-word"? It's not a swear word! People get away with calling me "psycho", "ret*d" and "schizo", and no-one refers to those as "P-word" etc, do they? Tell you what, everyone who looks obviously foreign, or ret*d, gets cut a hell of a lot of slack.
I get a little curious as I see you're from Australia.
What do you think about all the people in Australia that have an European origin, then? (Don't know if you are one of them or if you are a native).
Maybe the Australian natives also thought that Europeans were OK - in Europe, that is?
As far as I know, the natives were not always treated very well by the Europeans.
Hope you understand what I mean - no insult intended.
Often that was true, but that was several generations before any of us were born! Besides, the Europeans achieved a lot at the same time, and I don't want to see that all pissed against the wall in the name of some social experiment. Sadly when you're in survival mode, you can find yourself becoming more insular, rightly or wrongly.
Those of us with invisible disabilities are left to rot, and assumed to be lazy when we're having genuine difficulties. Society goes much easier on anyone who's ret*d forinstance, and I think a large part of it is that intelligence is no longer valued, and at least they have way more social nous than most of us, whereas we're written off as antisocial psychopaths.

Umm... What?...
First off there are some circumstances where political correctness has gone to far. But being a racist is never acceptable... And that is clearly what the second half of your post shows. I have less of a problem with asians than I do with people who tarnish the term black by making them all seem like gangster a** sh***, because that is not what they are. Yet you have whiggers going and trying to be "black" when really they just want to be uncivilised mobsters, along with the few blacks that popularized the gangster image, which is not what most blacks are. Most blacks are very civilized. And arabs are not out to blow up your local hospital, most of them are very civilized and live by a strict code of conduct.
If you want to hate a group, there is the scientologists for that, adn conspiracy theorists, and racists, and other people who make this world less desirable to live in... Go hate the people that do wrong to others, not an entire group of which less than 1% are actually causing a problem, but rather hate the group that is actually causing the problem, plus you may become a less miserable person if you hate less people... Screw that though, I don't even hate the people, I just hate the problems they are causing and seek to solve the problems...
Also the asians are not invading, I don't see China's navy on the west coast bombarding North American land, and sending soldiers in.
Padium - You're a wise (and kind) young man. I hope nothing or no one ever takes that away from you. If I believed in reincarnation, I'd have to think you've been through a couple times.
Best of all, you seem to be outspoken (duh? the AS?) enough to call others out for being unkind. Even if its online, you are not afraid to stand up for the underdog. Ah, if only we had more like you.
BPalmer - I am sad and troubled by your world-view.
Ironic that you should bash China and other Asian countries, when I have learned inner peace and outer strength from studying their beliefs.
By learning and practicing that "you get what you give" you may find that people will be attracted by you, not away from you by following small, simple rules. Actually, its perfect for an aspie. Especially feng shui - if you like to arrange things, obsess about compasses, and things like that.
For example, that bum on the bus. He sounds pretty gross and trust me - nothing sends me into a meltdown more than someone eating or drinking or chewing gum!! ! (OMG! So funny you should mention that!)
But instead of glaring at him and writhing in pain (been there!) try giving him a sincere smile and then go back to your book or whatever. You'd be very surprised at how that will effect the other passengers, the bum (ick?), and yourself.
I dunno, that's probably a lame example but please check out feng shui and the Tao. I can honestly say they changed my life as an aspie.
Hope we aren't too far off-thread...the original topic was name-calling and how that hurts people.
PC really just means NOT calling people names so you won't hurt people's feelings. Pretty basic stuff.
...Perhaps we should try and quiet down for the time being, lest this thread be locked.

Perhaps so...
Guess I've become reactionary and mean-spirited recently. Survival mode, and a sense of having been ripped off the system in a big way. When everyone's down on you for the slightest thing, you can easily end up "passing it down the line", looking for scapegoats because you feel you're one. But I'm willing to entertain the idea that my sense of what's fair and just has become warped.

I got out of my environment. I was 17 and a girl, but I put one foot in front of the other with nothing but what I could carry and hitchhiked out of Kansas by myself and I had to get out from the mental institution my parents had me caged up in to do it. I have been supporting myself one way or another ever since. High functioning, low functioning, who knows? No one knew what AS was until I was in my late 40's and I certainly didn't until I was in my late 50's. I didn't know I was a ret*d, though plenty of other people gave me that as their opinion throughout my life. I don't have a house and no car any more either.
The bus here is just as bad as yours, and doesn't run on the weekends. I walk a lot and have strong legs and bones for it. And truthfully, other than going to work and modding on WP, I don't have much but a cat and a few clothes. But what do I really need.
No one gets out of here alive, anyway, eh?

When I was 17 or so, in the early 1990s, Australia's economy was deep in recession (much worse than the US at the time, although the reverse applies right now), with unemployment shooting up into the double digits overnight. If I'd known how difficult the job market would be, I would've knuckled down at school, then gone onto uni - meaning I would've graduated from a four-year course at the end of '94, as the economy was picking up again. Anyway, that was a long time ago...
Maybe I could study (at last part-time) at uni, and get some qualifications to gain a well-paying job, and justify acting and thinking "middle-classt" like I used to. Living in the macho, conformist and downright parochial atmosphere of Queensland's underclass is twisting me, in very ugly ways. Ways that don't even make sense. And having gone on trips to other places which are much more open-minded, over the last five years or so, has made me despise this area even more!
You need to find a good few zingers in front of them. Something that they couldn't comprehend at first and then say, "see". I have no idea what those would be but I am sure others would have some ideas.
I am sorry that is happening to you. I have noticed people who are less intelligent are the ones who do that. They sound pretty dumb to me.
