Mushrooms...I work in the woods and bring home chantrelles and cauliflower mushroom to eat, and try to id the others. Would like to try growing shitakes and oysters at home.

Soapmaking...made some melt and pour goatsmilk soap this week, fantasizing about making cold process soap worth selling.

Portable sawmilling...I kill a lot of trees and leave them lay, fantasize about all the lumber, cooking planks, and carving blanks going to waste.

My current obsessions:
- Online radio broadcasting
- Wrong Planet
- Super Sentai series
- Photoshop
- Reading magazines
- Listening to video game OSTs (Super Mario Galaxy I and II, Bully/Canis Canem Edit, Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection)
- Tinkering with my laptop
- Interacting with fellow autistics online

...

Can't think of anything more I am obsessing myself with... Count thinking of obsessions as one of them!

Astronomy/Cosmology and Physics, especially if it isn't intuitive, like Quantum Mechanics or High Energy physics(I have fun categorizing sub-atomic particles and fundamental forces. This is the field I wish to specialize into for a PhD after college.)

Science in general, I usually can become obsessed about anything in this subject area. The exception is if I have to memorize something I'm uninterested in or I see as unnecessary to do; such as Anatomy. I will not become a medical doctor, and I find that I can't make learning all of the names of muscles without an interest in them as useful. Usually if I don't have natural interest for something, I must find a practical use for it in order to be able to learn it.

Science Fiction & Fantasy book series or television series, I like these because the characters are more easily understood, there isn't a significant amount of symbolism or allusions other than the obvious ones, repetition of certain themes are often present, and the need to describe the world or environment that is created by the author rather than solely the characters and their development helps me become more interested.

Sitcoms: I like some of these because they are obvious in how they present social situations. The insight I receive helps me apply the methods into the real world. Sometimes I wonder whether or not some of the actions of characters in sitcoms are representative of the actual world though.

Certain video games, I especially like RPGs and Action-Adventures; lately I've been obsessed with Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim; however, I've been far too busy with schoolwork and my other more important interests to play it.

Other people: as an Aspie I usually can't tell what other people are thinking or how they will react to what I say and do, so over the years I've developed methods to kind of estimate and group people based from the personality of the individual and how they interact with the controversial comments of other NT's. I can sort of measure their reactions to what I would do and say from this. It has developed into a sort of game and test of my abilities. Of course some days the smallest illogical things others participate in can annoy me, so during those periods I tend to ignore others.

My ancestry; I've been exhausting whatever resources able to me at the moment when determining a detailed structure of my ancestry and family history. I found many new and interesting insights.

Genetic genotyping and sequencing: a few years ago I purchased a service from a genotyping company called 23andme. This was mostly due to my interest in ancestry. I've discovered that the many uses of genotyping my DNA, even if it was a small portion(500k snps), to be quite amazing. It is very interesting to search a specific allele for a certain SNP and discover the likelihood of having a certain trait. For example, I've used google to search for websites that explicate research results for some genes that might signify the development of autism, due to studies pursued by molecular biologists. Interestingly, I found a few, and discovered that the alleles at a specific SNP that were overwhelmingly present in autistic individuals in contrast to their full-siblings without autism, to be present in myself. Of course this doesn't say anything for certain as I know one gene isn't the sole cause for this development, but it does help correlate a truth. and proves to be interesting nevertheless. Other similar uses have occurred throughout my history with this service.

New interests:

Mathematics; until recently I usually didn't see a practical reasoning for a lot of the things we learned in Algebra II and Trigonometry. I'd get As in the classes, but math or any other applied skill has been a trouble for me to grasp the general concepts and reasons for learning it in comparison with other subjects; I usually do better with categorizing facts and learning them. When I started Calculus this year though, the applications have really amazed me and inspired me to do two things: perfect my ability in the pre-requisite skills, and excel further than the topic of the class I am in, so that during the class I can focus on whatever I missed during self-study. I love looking at the graphs of functions, and seeing how they change when I change a certain aspect of the function or apply a process, for example.

Asperger's/Autism Spectrum Disorders, I have yet to be officially diagnosed, but I think it is quite obvious to me after researching the topic and obsessing over it for many hours, that I have it. It explains so many things, my learning style, my interactions, my interests, my difficulties with dealing with certain family members when growing up, and so on. I already have a list of books I want to read about the topic so that I can have a better understanding. As soon as I free up some time from my other interests and responsibilities I will delve further.

Isn't that the point of a discussion board? To state interest and in turn attract others with similar interests? If you don't share with the class you might as well put your head down on your desk. :D

I recently found the author Dianne Sylvan, though she pisses me off with some things written in her books, I can't put the darn thing down the other parts are so good. Nothing better then finding a book that interests you.. even if you feel compelled to visit the authors site and vent your irritations.

When I'm by myself, it would be watching movies and trying to "spot the aspies" in social situations its pretty much the same. I guess its sort of my subconscious desire to find people I can relate to, instead of pretending to relate all the time..

I love mushrooms! The edible ones are delicious! But even beyond that, I love how some varieties can just pop up overnight. At my last apartment complex, every time it rained in warm weather months, (TX, so most months) the grassy area across from my balcony would be covered in mushrooms. I don't know why I think that is so cool, but they always brought a smile to my face when I went outside to smoke.
I probably shouldn't mention (but what the hell right?) that as a child, I never told anyone my window A/C unit was leaking...since I could grow mushrooms from my damp carpet. I'm sure that was great for my lungs and allergies :P

Thanks Taupey!
Burlesque is awesome! Joining was a huge, huge step for me. It is really amazing how getting on stage and really putting myself out there for the world to view is easier than trying to join a conversation with a group of people.

That's great! :) I have never heard of anything like that around here in Norfolk, Virginia. Otherwise, I would go check it out.

That is too bad! It is truly a lot of fun for the performers and the audience. It's really helped me break out of my shell a lot. Here is a video from one of our local halloween burlesque events (not me, and no nudity, this one is an awesome bellydancer). http://www.youtube.com/user/benbbritt#p/u/3/dtb3ycYsNEs The rest of the show is uploaded by performer on this channel, NSFW.

I started playing the last two combat mission video games recently and what started as hunting down some information in a field manual online has turned into collecting WW2 historical documents from archives.
