Very entertaining thread, this one. I still don't get something, though:

ASS-P, since you get money (weekly, no less!), why don't you get a storage locker in Santa Cruz? Why are you asking WP members to store your stuff for you? There are many places to store your belongings which I am confident you can afford. To wit:

https://www.publicstorage.com/californi ... 41&CHID=LL

https://www.extraspace.com/Storage/Faci ... =org::maps

https://www.selfstoragesantacruz.com/

http://www.suttersfortss.com/

https://www.extraspace.com/Storage/Faci ... =org::maps

http://www.jdministorage.com/

https://www.storage-mart.com/soquel

This. All of this.

While disability payments are known for not being high incomes, ASS-P doesn't pay rent anywhere. He lives outdoors, in shelters, or in taxpayer/charity funded spaces like he is right now. Unless he has to sign his check over to them, ASS-P has a higher disposable income than MANY people on these forums and can pay for things himself. If he "can't," afford it, then perhaps he should be asking for help in learning how to budget his finances? Or asking for help managing his finances on his behalf? Or asking for information on how to open an account and have the payments for his storage locker automatically paid from it? etc. NOT for others to give him their money.

This is kind of ironic. For a while I didn't know this myself. But, I had to read about American culture as presented to a foreigner to understand this. Look under especially under #6 under one article I read.

http://www1.cmc.edu/pages/faculty/alee/ ... alues.html

Philosophically, I don't agree with certain aspects because to me some of it is to simplistic BUT at least I understand why people respond the way they respond when I say or do certain things. It's very enlightening. It's why you react the way you do towards ASS-P.

Interesting. I learned something here just now. I clicked the link but didn't read everything - just the Bolded # headlines And #6 in full. Being born & raised in Canada, I have typical North American values. I had no clue that "self" words were an English language and culture, thing.

I know that there are many collectivist cultures as we have large immigrant populations of Indians & Chinese here, and I've read of some African cultures that have phrases such as "I am, because we are," because they all depend on one another for survival so do everything in the best interest of the group. We also have indigenous cultures here that are pretty awesome in that the way one achieves the highest social status is by how much they can give and provide to the rest of the community - they're still hyper competitive to be the biggest, best, strongest, fastest, best hunter/fighter/plunderer etc - but not to enrich themselves and their immediate family, but so that they can be the one who takes the honour of providing for all the elders and those who have less.

Regardless of all of those things, ASS-P lives in the USA. He has an income. It's no one else' responsibility on this forum to take on financial expenses to provide his wants. I want things I can't afford, too, but I do NOT expect anyone here to pay for them. ASS-P needs to acknowledge & accept this and stop begging people to pay for stuff for him. It's inappropriate & unacceptable - ESPECIALLY if he's wasting his income on junk food and soda in lieu of paying for a storage locker the he seems to want so badly. THAT'S why he's getting one big "f**k You," of a response from me. Not only are his communication methods extremely inappropriate in their begging and inflammatory language, I just think it's flat out WRONG to be on here as an internet panhandler trying to beg and plead and swindle some unfortunately easily persuaded disabled person out of their money and/or space in their home.

Bah, you Americans are all alike!

Here's another piece of Indigenous culture from the Haida Gwaii people I found rather interesting. It's concept, phonetically, called "git-gun" which is when someone REALLY REALLY wants some material thing that you possess, regardless of what it's monetary value is in our system, no matter how much that item may currently be your PRIZED possession.. in their culture: you give it to them. Often it's handmade jewelry, or maybe it's a hat or garment, but it could be some other modern item - whatever - but when someone REALLY REALY wants something you have, you give it to them and make their day/life at the moment. If at any time there's some item someone else has that you REALLY want & you express it, they give it to you. It's a very interesting concept of gift giving as well as learning not to be so attached to material possessions and appreciating that your prized possession could have even greater value to someone else, so, you let it go to them.

Doesn't Buddism say one shouldn't have attachment to material things?

Jainism also says to avoid attachment to things. We call in aparigraha. I practice it to the point when I only have one change of clothes.

Maybe? I'm not a Buddhist & don't know - but it sounds like something that could be a Buddhist teaching.

How much is the cheapest storage? If it's like $10-15 a month, he can certainly sacrifice a couple of Burger King sessions a month.....

Yes he can if it's that important to him.

But of course that depends on how much stuff there is. Which continues to be the great unsolved mystery.
