This. Well, I used to be a dark-clothes wearing, crying cutter as a teen, and I still listen to Industrial, Goth and Screamo music styles.

I like the fact that you included "it's complicated."

If you asked anyone from the extreme right, they would tell you I'm a leftist. If you asked anyone from the extreme left, they would tell you I'm conservative.

Neither is quite correct. It's, well, complicated. I'd get into the specifics, if I hadn't long ago developed an extreme distaste for how those conversations always seem to end up turning. Seems people don't like me being the way i am, and keep trying to convince me to swing one way or t'other. It annoys the hell out of me!

Why I can't seem to meet anyone that can understand the fact that most of the stuff I believe, I've already had a very long time to think about, is beyond me.

I actually wrote a song about it twenty years ago called, "Monkey in the Middle."

I've never fitted in anywhere.

That said, there's nothing exactly counter-cultural about me by British standards. By US standards, probably, but that's most Europeans.

Well I certainly do not fit in with society, but I can't say i fit into a particular counter culture either.......but I agree with some of the ideas expressed by various counter cultures.

It would be good to hear which 'counterculture' people identify with. It's not very helpful to anyone else's understanding if you say, 'I might/might not be a bit counterculture.' Look at the word: it doesn't have its own meaning; it merely signifies a set of beliefs or lifestyle not sourced in mainstream. So, literally, it could mean anything from Fascist to Socialist, Anarchist to Wikkan, Extreme Capitalist to Rasta, Woad-Wearer to Biker ... well, you get my drift. If you're taking the trouble to post at all, why not be a bit more descriptive, hey?

I think the two tend to go together.....those who feel secure with their own company are more likely to feel secure in relationships. And how do you tell when you are partnerable, until you're in a close relationship? I guess one measure is the quality of the "ordinary" friendships you have, but I've always found relationships to be qualitatively different somehow.

I guess we've drifted off-topic here........though maybe not so far as it may seem. I've often compared joining a community to taking on a lover. They're both huge social steps. One guy did remark that he thought the community I was in tended to go around wooing people, distorting its image to fit whatever the prospective communard seemed to want. That reminded me of how a lot of individuals behave during the mating game.

Sorry to read about how your relationship went. Strange that an Aspie would conceal things from you like that, given how uncomfortable we usually are about lies.

I'm apparently stuck up... if people break simple rules around me while in class, or goof off when I'm trying to learn it overly agitates me more than it seems to do to the others. I just don't seem to understand why people would break the rules or act like they do...

I guess if you become a punk or a golfer, you partner would most likey be from the same sub culture, or at the very least your sub culture friendly

I dont prescribe to any groups in particular apart from surfing (and here!!), which allows me to move in and out of groups with ease and fluidity.

There is always their hope you will become one of them..., and join their gang. And by me remaining aloof and bereft of a sub group identity, I can approach and identify with more people/groups, thereby enriching my life

The mystery man/woman sub culture is way cool

Autscape 2011 was great. Nice people, nice presentations, nice leisure sessions, very nice conversations, nice teas, nice wines, and a very relaxed atmosphere.
During the nights, we played with colourful light effects, as you can see here:

I wrote a short article about Autscape 2011, which I will post here after it gets published (in a couple of months time, hopefully).

Autscape 2012 will be on 23-26 July, at Belsey Bridge Conference Centre, as you can see here:
http://www.autscape.org/organisation/me ... uly-agenda

Would you like to come along?

P.S
For past discussions about Autscape here on WP, see this:

I can't say I really consider myself a countercultural person. I absolutely have that contrarian streak others mentioned but I don't think that really lends itself to being part of a counterculture. Within the counterculture you have to conform as much as any other culture, and being contrarian by conforming to something "non-mainstream" doesn't really work for me.

I really have never felt totally at home in any group; I just feel like less of an outsider in some than in others.

Edit: For the record, I answered "It's complicated."
