Harder to be gay, or autist?
i was never concernd with moneys or friends, and really only care about what my god thinks about me, (if he has a good and favorable view of me, then nothing else matters)
Since he is your own "personalized" God, I don't see how get can have a negative perspective of you..........
I find this thread extremely interesting . . .
Being Bisexual, polyamorous and autistic - I draw many paralelles to the social discrimination we face due to our difference and the experience of the gay community before the gay rights movement. I think perhaps we can take some lessons from a group which was marginalized for social differences and has successfully gained inclusion and understanding.
What are they doing thay we are not doing?
They are not hiding alone in thier homes anymore - they march every year (gay pride day) and also hold remembrance marches (pink triangle day) to show their numbers and give voice to injustice.
They have organized lobby groups - EGALE (equality for gays and lesbians everywhere), The Snowy Owl Monarchist Society and countless other groups that advocate in the courts.
They riot (Stonewall)
Perhaps we can take some lessons when it comes to social change - we wouldn't be the ones to come up with these answers but the rules for a successful social movement have already been established - This first step is deciding we aren't going to take it anymore, then do what they did ![]()
I think it would be particularily inspiring if we had an day of pride for People with developmental disabilities - and a day of rememberance for those who have suffered abuse and bullying, who have taken their own lives or were murdered, incarcerated or sufferered medical torture or negligence for being autistic. It would be a platform for education and advocacy and would raise awareness to the media - in the same way that gay pride day has.
We have an Autistic Pride Day. It's June 18th. It's just that even most of us don't know about it, let alone celebrate it.
BPalmer shares a common misconception about gay people:
It's not at all true that most gay people are affluent. What is true is that only affluent gay people get seen by society-- it's sort of like people with other autism who think all Aspies are rich like John Elder Robison (who's not all that rich, BTW). Gay people make less money than straight people in general. But lots of people don't know that many of us in real life, so they think we're all like the wealthy gay people you see on TV.
And, like people with autism, gay people are born in white-trash roughneck areas. It's just that it's not safe for them to be out, so they stay closeted.
Thats why there are aspergers support groups.
Which often consist of a bunch of teens playing nintendo and pokemon cards.

Two can play at that game!
Neurotypical individuals often assume that their experience of the world is either the only one, or the only correct one. NTs find it difficult to be alone. NTs are often intolerant of seemingly minor differences in others. When in groups NTs are socially and behaviorally rigid, and frequently insist upon the performance of dysfunctional, destructive, and even impossible rituals as a way of maintaining group identity. NTs find it difficult to communicate directly, and have a much higher incidence of lying as compared to persons on the autistic spectrum.
NT is believed to be genetic in origin. Autopsies have shown the brain of the neurotypical is typically smaller than that of an autistic individual and may have overdeveloped areas related to social behavior.

I want the T-shirt!
The Nazis put mentally ret*d people into the death camps and gas chamber (that would have included autistics)
and it continues today - this happened here in Canada:
Gabriel Poirier 9 years old , died : 4/17/08
Hautes-Rivieres School
Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec
53-pound Gabriel, an autistic boy with special needs, died under under a blanket at Hautes-Rivieres School. His parents were initially told he was hiding under the blanket. A coroner revealed that Gabriel's teachers had tightly wrapped him in the blanket, leaving only the tips of his ears sticking out, as punishment when he became disruptive. They left him unsupervised in a corner for 20 minutes, returning when a timer sounded.
Also:
Garrett Halsey 16 years old (died : 12/23/04)
Grafton School Inc., Grafton group home
Autistic and mentally ret*d boy died while he was restrained by 6 people who sat on his back. This occurred on his second day at the group home.
and :
Michael R. Lewis, III 15 years old (died : 8/25/2003)
Parchment High
On the first day of school, this autistic child was restrained on his stomach by six employees. He was dead within two hours.
and:
Raymond Lee Mitchell 21 years old (died : 7/19/2006)
Home in Riverside County, CA
Autistic young man threw a temper tantrum. His mother called the police who she feels escalated, rather than de-escalated, the situation. Ultimately, she saw 6 grown men on top of her son as they restrained him.

It really depends on cultures. If a culture understands homosexuality more than it understands autism, homosexuals in that culture would be better off than people with autism. If the culture were reversed, the result would be reversed. However, in either situation, the autistic people would still be more likely to be lonely as a result of their lack of communication skills. Still, I think it's better to be socially awkward and accepted than to be socially typical and hated.
Godwin's law applies especially to inappropriate, inordinate, or hyperbolic comparisons of other situations (or one's opponent) with Hitler or Nazis or their actions. The law and its corollaries would not apply to discussions covering genocide, propaganda, eugenics (racial superiority) or other mainstays of Nazi Germany http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin%27s_law
I was pointing out that the Nazis actually did execute autistics - I was not attacking anyone on this thread or trying to end this discussion - I hope you did not interpret my comment that way
Was what I said inappropriate?

I think Wallourdes was just joking, hence the winking smiley.
