I see it pop in and out of the illusion. But I am not able to change the way I see it at will, it just happens.

From your description that sounds like a normal viewing of the illusion, I think.

The mask of the face does briefly appear to be concave when the mask turns before one sees the visual illusion of a convex face, instead of a concave face (back of a mask).

That's normal.

If at some point one sees the back of the mask as a convex face rather than a concave face (back of the mask), one has seen the visual illusion.

At least one person in this thread did say they had the ability to focus on the illusion and change it back and forth at will. That's pretty interesting, and I guess could be a sign that whatever the neurological reason for this phenomenon is, is not like a switch but rather like a continuum of varying effect.

I see the inside of the mask, rotating to the outside view.

I experience some strange occurrences with my visual processing of objects, that suggest intermittent agnosias depending on the state of my executive functioning.

I have close relatives on 'that' spectrum.

That's interesting, I've researched this phenenomeon quite a bit, and can't recollect anyone relating that specific experience.

That's interesting, care to elaborate on more specifically on what the strange occurrences of visual processing of objects.

There are actually a couple of disorders where objects may appear smaller or larger, in one's environment, for periods of time that may be affected by one's state of executive functioning.

I've experienced the part where things get smaller off and on my entire life, if that is associated with what your are experiencing, I'm not aware of it having anything specific to do with "that" spectrum.

Never? That was my experience as well. I need to pause, or manipulate the cursor very slowly to see the illusion, otherwise the mask looks hollow almost the entire time the back of the mask is in view.

I only see convex faces, no matter what I do. Even if I stop it I cannot see concave, no matter how hard I concentrate on it. even when the mask is slightly sideways.

I mostly see convex but sometimes it's concave.

I am somewhat faceblind, but not severely so.

Sure.
The scale of things can change. Facial features are smaller or larger in a distortion, or I've seen things that I'm looking for in a search( because I cant find the darn thing), appear right in front of my eyes - once it materialized in a second or two, building up from the bottom to the top. Imagine the Star Trek transporter beaming an object in view, but the materialization starts from the bottom and gradually fills in to the top. 8O

This happens when my ED gets low.... ouch! ......causes a lot secondary problems..... People say, "hey, can't you see it, it's right there in front of you?"

This has had deep implications as affecting self esteem, for one, because you don't know what it is you are fighting.... (but now I know and roll with it. )

Me neither. It's just dots. Doesn't matter what I do.

I had the same thing happen too. I watched it once it looked hollow paused it, manipulate the cursor to see the illusion, and then watched it again and it changed to an illusion the second time. I'm dyslexic and also a very visual learner so I catch a lot of different details when looking at things. Although I also have eye-tracking abnormalities. I have to cover large portions of text when reading a book or else my eyes end up all over the place when reading.

The illusion works on me every single time. Schizophrenics on the other hand see right through the illusion. People on psychedelics such as mushrooms or LSD aren't fooled by it either. I read that people on cannabis can see through the illusion too. I'm going to test this out some day, I'll smoke some weed or take some psychedelics and see what the video looks like. What direction do you all see this woman spinning in:
Image
I can only see her spinning to the right. My brother says he sees her spinning in one direction for a while then switching directions. I actually saw that happen once.

Now this one I can change at will. But I always start out seeing her spinning clockwise.

Try watching this video again and blinking slight more rapidly than you usually do.
http://scienceblogs.com/cognitivedaily/ ... e_holl.php
It think it switched for me because I do blink a lot when I'm not focusing on something, when I focus I don't blink at all.
Does anyone else see it hollow as they blink normally or a little more than normal?
