I was always very good at arithmetic. The first problem I encountered was with algebra. I couldn't understand why letters were being used and thought the actual letter had some sort of meaning (symbols would have worked better for me). Once my dad took a few hours to explain it, it really sunk in. I never had a problem again until we did trigonometry and calculus (real mathematics, not arithmetic). I never knew which formula to use for which problem, but I managed to pass, even at an advanced level.

I seem to have the opposite problem you have. I can do more advanced math quite well, but I mess up my basic arithmetic all the time

I have AS but I've always sucked at math. I can do basic math (addition, subtraction, etc) with no problem, but when it came to high school level algebra, I didn't get it at all. No matter how many times it was explained to me I never got it. The only reason I managed to pass algebra 1 and 2 in high school was because the teachers felt so bad for me they bumped my grade up from an F to a D.

I was always great with everything else, but I just can't figure out math.

I'm horrific at math, but fantastic at English and writing. I have a problem with numbers overall. But if you tell me your name once, I'll never forget it. It's weird. I'm great with names and faces, but terrible with numbers.

Horrible at math here. literature and history are my strong points, particularly music history.

I'm bad at math, the only two things I'm ok at are addition and algebra, I can't subtract well or divide for some reason, mutiplication is neutral.

They tried to get me to memorize the times tables over and over, it never stuck, it didn't help that when I was younger I had trouble writing so it added to the errors.
