A therapist brings his or her own dirty laundry to the table and, again, there is nothing scientific about psycology. It's strictly theory, and, after enough of them, I think sitting and babbling about how pathetic you think you are is a waste of time. CBT was more proactive and positive and I actually learned a lot.

It's scary to think that the people we give access to mentally vulnerable people, and who's views on said people are taken as fact by many, could themselves be so sick. A doctor or a surgeon with a viral or bacterial infection wouldn't be allowed near an immuno-compromised patient. It just goes to show how primitive psychiatry and psychology actually are- Lots of scope for people like Louise to make improvements! Perhaps protecting patients from the sick psychologists/psychiatrists would have an effect on their profession's success rate similar to that elicited in surgery by Joseph Lister's introduction of antiseptics!

I have looked up CBT online, and from what I have come across, it certainly looks more promising than the other forms of therapy I've come across. When I get an opportunity, I'm going to mention it to my doctor and see what she says.

Thankyou for all your help.

For me, the good ones have been people who talk to me as a human being. They don't study me, they interact with me. Through the interaction and sharing there is some help.
There aren't many shrinks out there like that at all. I wish you the best of luck.

Yikes! That's a lot of people to go between. At least you found three that could help you. I think that once psycologists, psychiatrists and councellors finish their training, their patients have become so dehumanised in their minds that they have difficulty interacting with them as people. Either that or they're trying to maintain a "professional distance". I don't know. The whole thing seems screwed up to me.

People who join the ranks of 'mental health professionals' are generally screwy people to start with. Either they are trying to figure out whats wrong with themselves in the start, or they want control over people. I haven't met any other types.

LOL! :D

Though I've never been the subject of a psychology experiment. This is probably a very good thing.

hats why I went into psych in college.Unfortuantly this was in 82-87 and there was no info about aspergers taught.I also managed to "miss" the class about alchoholism, took my being homeless to figure out I "might" have a problem.

The reason I never pursued being a therapist is because I was so afraid of "doing more damage then good"....maybe the very fact that a person has no fear of messing with peoples lives in a negative way, makes them less likely to be qualified for the job? Then again,I think the same thing when I get behind the wheel of a vehicle....I cant forget that I could kill someone with a "mistake"...it doesnt even appear to occur to most people...."get off your cell phones, and pay attention!! !!"

r_mc, who are you being sent to for assessment? Despite that your GP sounds more sure of herself than she should be for a group of disorders she doesn't have professional experience in, I'm glad she's at least referring you on for assessment.

Is this diagnostician you're going to someone who is very experienced in adult ASDs and your sex? If not, ask for a different referal from your GP because child diagnosticians are usually not experienced enough to spot an adult aspie.

Unfortunately I discovered that by experience. So don't make my same mistake.

Hehe...another of the psycologists, in the group I worked for, was only a tad better than the coke addict of the group. He was approaching fifty and ran off with his collegue who was about twenty years younger, leaving his wife of umpteen years and three kids. She used to come to the office (wifey) and yell at him and he'd come out and yell back. This always happened before/after hours. She didn't want him to lose patients thus losing her huge child support (just a guess). They would carry on like five year olds. And he was the leader of the group, the one everyone wanted. Oh, if they only knew!! ! The one Psychiatrist I worked for, who was loosely part of this group, had a daughter in a mental institution for anorexia. And he was a big name. If they can't manage their own lives and families, how can they tell us what to do? That's why I like CBT. It's not the type of therapy where a therapists own issues get in the way of helping you. They are more like teachers and it's more an education on how to think in less destructive ways. It's becoming very big in the US, but, then the US tends to think of disorders as more biological in nature than some other countries. I agree with this. I really don't think a trauma at five years old makes us disturbed for life, unless we witnessed a murder! JMHO :)

I wrote this about 15 years ago after several years of frustration with "Mental Health Professionals"

All that glitter is not gold, all that's green is not mold
but it is t the doctors who take her apart
they know her inner workings,by the sound of her fart
A salami aroma,a sound flat and dry
Just mention her "EGO" and she starts to cry

She hates her mother but loves her to death
We can tell about her childhood
from the cheese smell of her breath
We will give her a label,a tag for her toe
it's obvious by how her fingernails grow

Her dysfunctional family, the wounded child within
show clearly in her lopsided grin
She's in chronic denial,as show in her protest
at the enema we gave her to see how she digest
A normal person wouldnt mind a scientific probe
into their minor organs or their frontal lobe

When asked politely to remove it,for our better view
she relies"I'm using it,perhaps when I am through"
She simply grows sullen when stuck with a pin
becomes introverted when kicked in the shin
It has become quit clear to the experts at large
that she has much hostility to those who are in charge.

We are however,a patient lot and often repeat
how science has proven malajustment by the fungus on her feet
we maintain insanity and foot rot are in her family tree
only drugs and therapy can uproot heredity

She has the delusion her purple hair is just aesthetics
that only being forced to change cause her to feel "pathetic"
She readily admits her disdain for the status que
but claims there is some grace"in how a twisted tree grows"

The conclusion of the experts....she will not repent
she will not change her twisted ways after all the time we've spent
We believe further therapy would be a complete waste
On one who believes purple hair is"a matter of taste"

I completely agree. The "tell me about your childhood" stuff usually leaves me drained afterwards, and I have hardly learnt anything practical that could better my current situation. CBT helps me learn about behaviour and thought modification techniques to prevent self-destruction, because that's where most of my misery comes from anyway.

I am being sent to the London Institute of Psychiatry at Kings College London- they've got a department that specialises in social, genetic and developmental psychiatry. I don't know what their reputation's like or if they've got anyone qualified to assess adult females.

You've certainly got me interested in the CBT, thanks! One thing you can definately say about your old job- it's given you plenty of amusing anecdotes!

Aspie94: One trauma probably doesn't screw someone up for life. Repeated trauma does. One incident may appear to set it off but the problem was already building or is reinforced afterwards.

freudian psychoanalysis is crap. Goup therapy probably won't help you right now. What you need is a thourough evaluation from a qualified neuropsychologist who has experience with ASD's. This person will take a developmental history from you and your family and probably also do some mental and psychological testing to see where your intelligence, executive function, etc is. Talk therapy with some half-assed councelor is not going to do anything, as it seems you've already decided. good luck.

All she'll do is try to convince you that every pissy problem you've ever had is rooted in how much sex you've been getting and how, deny that autism even exists, and try to sell you on some antiquated pseudoscience that completely and blindly ignores every single thing that's been discovered about the human brain for the past fifty years! RUN!

I have a great deal of respect for honest psychiatry, but it's hard to find anyone in the field who fits that description.

Agreed.
