Curing intellectual disability... how?

Who to "cure" and by how much? Would that mean making someone with an IQ below (edit:) 70 and/or a diagnosis of MR as "smart" until they just about no longer meet criteria? Give them an IQ of 76 (nevermind about those self-help skills) and wish them eternal happiness for being... normal? Enabled? Healthy? For still being far more impaired than most people on this planet?

They'd still have low intelligence when compared to others. Or maybe increase their IQ to 100? But don't people with average intelligence sometimes feel intellectually disabled to someone who has a higher than normal IQ? They are impaired concerning intellectual abilities compared to someone with a much higher IQ after all.

If everyone came to acquire an at least average IQ, those at the lower end might likely get labelled intellectually disabled against after only a few years because they completely fail to be as smart and as skilled as someone with an IQ of 115 or 130 is. Sure, they can feed themselves, they can life independent though they won't be able to do everything someone with a higher IQ can do... I wonder if they'd complain about being the "dumbest" and most intellectually impaired of all people, with impaired adaptive skills, impaired executive functions... ?

I can't imagine anything like that working out (maybe someone has some good ideas on how it can work out fairly smoothly?), though it would be interesting to witness.

A cure for the social impairments of autism might just pose similar questions. There are so many non-autistic and typical people who have mediocre or weak empathy but there also are a few who are far better at that whole empathy deal than the rest. ...the acquisition of how much empathy is thought of to be satisfying?

Our society is beyond just attending to medical emergencies after all so why should anyone be happy with an average amount of empathy that most people possess (thanks to a way to increase empathy to an average level) when there exist people who have better developed or higher amounts of empathy than most people? Cosmetic surgery is popular so surely there'll be another branch called mental cosmetic surgery in the future.

You misunderstood my point. of course, Autistics' brains are wired differently. In your original post, you used the word "wrong" instead of "different" which would imply that we are defective, ergo you inadvertently contradicted yourself.

And you and Nonperson misunderstood my point. I've already explained what I meant, and thomas81 clearly understood my argument. "Wrong" isn't necessarily a black-and-white definition. "Wrong" scientifically does not equal "wrong" morally. I'm not going to keep going in circles when I already have presented my argument.

"Wrong" scientifically does not mean anything. Things are what they are. Our wiring could not be "scientifically wrong". That doesn't even make sense. Some theory about it could be wrong, but not the wiring itself.

^^ If you'd only read beyond the topic title you'd see it's clearly not trolling.

I guess what I meant isn't really that searching for a "cure" is idiotic, it's that the idea of a cure itself is idiotic, and hoping to reach such a cure is foolish.

An autism cure at this point is not a definable idea as no one at this point in time can define what a cure for any form of Autism would be. A cure for Autism is a metaphorical goal at this point to end the struggles that some do experience with Autism Spectrum Disorders. A goal that cannot yet be met or fully defined is simply that, a goal. A cure for Cancer is a goal, a cure for Autism is a goal, a cure for Epilepsy is a goal. World Peace and zero carbon emissions are goals. Are any of them attainable in our lifetime; probably not, and no one at this point knows exactly how these goals would be attained, so they are all metaphorical goals, but the hope to reach the goals is certainly not foolish, as they are all nobly inspired and understood as worthwhile goals, even if only metaphorical goals at this point in time.

It is now understood that abnormal brain growth is specifically associated with regressive autism in male children. It is not understood if that is the specific cause, nor is it understood why the abnormal brain growth occurs. The search is on to find out why. That's what scientists know at this point.

However, if through future research a common environmental factor was found prenatally or post-natally and determined to cause the abnormal brain growth, and in isolating and preventing that environmental factor abnormal brain growth, as well as regressive autism could be prevented that would be as beneficial as any cure to those individuals that could avoiding the debilitating impact of regressive autism.

This is all part of the process to reach the metaphorical goal of a cure. As is prevention in the metaphorical goal of a cure for Cancer, that has been determined effective through research.

Over 1800 professionally trained scientists are not taking part of a foolish goal; they are involved in each small incremental step toward that potential goal that is only a metaphorical one at this point in time.

Science does not dismiss a goal, just because there are currently no valid instructions provided to get to that goal. A goal in science that has not yet been met or fully defined, is a major purpose of all areas of science. If one defines the goals of science as foolish that science tediously and painstakingly works toward through the combined efforts of thousands of scientists, than one is effectively defining science as foolish, at least in part.

There are of course, some cases of scientific findings that are proven ineffective, and many areas of science that don't reach goals. But, that too, is part of the overall process.

That was pretty much the opinion on the goals of science centuries ago, as skepticism was the rule instead of the exception, in the general public and among those in power. Thank goodness things have changed significantly where scientists are at least respected in the medical fields, to a level where the government in charge no longer puts scientists to death for searching for "lofty" goals, that some in the population may be skeptical of.

I heard MDMA worked well for Aspies. I'm currently searching for some to try, but I know no-one who dabbles in that area...yes I know it's dangerous, but the rewards outweigh any potential danger. Any.

While it's true that some ASD problems are a result of living in an NT world, that doesn't mean that the brains of ASD individuals aren't wired atypically. There IS something wrong with ASD-ers' neurology. Our brains look differently than the other 99% of the population. That cannot be denied, and it doesn't mean that we are defective.

Yes, it would be like saying Black or Chinese people have defective skin.

No it would liek saying that homosexuals in a heterosexual world are defective!

Please no "cure" for me! I don't want my brain tampered with. That's a scary thought.

The brains of females look different. The brains of high intelligent people look different. etc.

Try not to contradict yourself! :)

How am I contradicting myself? "Different" does not mean "defective." It is silly to say that our brains are not DIFFERENT from the norm, but again, that doesn't mean DEFECTIVE. Read my siggy quote. I am against a cure for neuropsych disorders. But I'm also against people with neuropsych disorders vehemently proclaiming that they don't have different brain wiring.

I mean with this that it's not a defective brain but a normal different brain okay?
Prove me that my brain is not normal different brain?

Actually, it's the brains of males that look different, since they are the minority. :P

And yet you completely missed the point. Clearly size doesn't matter.

I was making the point that difference in brain anatomy doesn't tell us that something is a disorder. The intense world theory explain that the neurons of autistics are even more plastic and more connected. Which could be interpret that neurotypicals have the REAL disorder, because neurotypicals were saying that autistics brains didn't work well(why it's classified in the DSM). But it's the opposite, so we can start research on neurotypical brain! (joke)
