Cats vs dogs preference
Cats! I like both, but I'm more used to cats, they appeal to me more aesthetically, and I like how self-sufficient they are. Dogs are sweet but kind of needy and I don't really like how they jump and slobber on you. Cats do scratch and bite but unless they are afraid of you or fighting not to be bathed they won't do it hard enough to hurt you.

I'm of the opinion, as an Aspie, that our natural preference is cats as pets over dogs - while the majority of NTs prefer dogs. And while I can't back this up with empirical evidence, my impression is that the "uber-NTs", or the ones who are very extroverted, very sensory-perceptive and so forth, tend to prefer larger (or more vicious) dogs for some reason (think: Rotweiler or German Shepherd or Labrador Retriever). Maybe it's something about the larger dogs being more "sociable" or something.
No way! I'm a dog person, and I know several other aspies who are too! My dog's my best friend. Dogs coevolved with humans and understand them on an instinctual level. They were, in fact, the first domesticated animal. They make perfect companions for those who can't socialize with humans, like me xD
I can also read dog behavior much more easily than cat behavior. But again, dogs, having evolved to live and work with humans, naturally communicate more easily with us. Cats aren't even fully domesticated.
And larger dogs aren't "more vicious." It's very rare to find a dog that's truly aggressive. Most aggression is based in fear and insecurity (from not being properly socialized, bad experiences, more anxious breeds or lines, etc). The rest is based in neurological problems like rage syndrome in spaniels.
Me too. I have lived alone with dogs for over twenty years and currently have three. I'm lucky enough to be able to take them to work with me so we all spend pretty much 24/7 together as companions to each other. My dogs are central to my life so I won't go on holiday without them and I don't like to be separated from them for long - four hours or so is long enough and I start worrying about them after that.
All my dogs (and those that have gone before) have been rescued from bad situations. One of my current dogs came to me with an 'aggressive' label but I've never had a problem with him. Yes, he was confused, sad, anxious and unsure who to trust when I got him but he just needed patience, kindness and space to work things out without pressure.
I work my dogs as a hobby for me and them - two are sighthounds and one is a terrier. There's nothing to beat the feeling of connection I get with a dog when we're working as a team together. I look at him, he looks back at me and there's a straight, primal connectedness between us.
What I find personally interesting is I also get a similar connection with horses, although they are a prey species compared to the dog as predator and as such have very different priorities and communication methods. And yet I get flummoxed on a daily basis by communicating with my own species

Cats I can take or leave. Not having a resident cat, my garden is used by my neighbour's cats for toileting and fighting. If I let my dogs crap and scrap all over his garden he'd rightly report them as a nuisance but there's nothing I can do about his cats. I have told him that if they come into the garden when my dogs are there, they are unlikely to be able to leave as my dogs do not tolerate cats, but he keeps on letting them out to wander where ever they wish.
Auf_ehre: my dogs will sort out your mouse problem and then clear out your cats too, so you can get a sensible dog companion

Cats, hands down! I love how I can relate to them and the fact that they are quiet and use the litter box rather than go wherever they please. I have a cat of my own who I raised since she was a kitten, and she is very affectionate and friendly.
Dogs are okay. I don't like how their barking startle me, nor do I like how messy they are.

I am a long time cat lover. My family only had cats when I was young, mostly a Siamese who was very affectionate. My father also loved cats and disliked dogs.
I tolerate dogs, in fact we had a dog for about 9 years which had belonged to my brother-in-law. However there are some things about dogs I don't like. For example, they have an constant desire to lick your hand and other body parts which I hate. Another problem is they constantly demand attention which is something I dislike in people as well as dogs (note I am aware there are cats who demand attention, just to be fair). Ironically, dogs are too intelligent, they seem to know what you are thinking, when you are angry with them, but don't have the communication skills to discuss. These qualities make dogs less relaxing to be around than cats. If you're not in a sociable mood, a cat won't hassle you about it, but a dog can be annoying.
No disrespect meant to dog lovers, please!

I was raised with dogs. But later in life, cats showed up. So I've known both camps.
At this point, my take is that cats are aspies and dogs are neurotypicals. I feel a greater connection to cats; a sense that we're on the same team, but operating autonomously and with greater independence. I can give a cat pretty much what she wants, and it's a mutual arrangement. Dogs require more sociability; more than I can give.
So I look for a cat companion rather than a dog companion. But it's got to be the right cat. Every creature is unique.
Absolutely! I've had several pets of the same species, and they all had very distinct personalities. No two are ever the same!! So it's never as easy as just saying this species versus that species.
That said, my preference is turtles and dogs, in that order.

When it comes to cuddling and playing I like both the same. When it comes to "owning" a pet, I favor cats. Weather is pretty bad here from autumn to spring, so being forced to go out with the dog three times a day, sucks. A cat is sufficient with you opening the door. ^^ Additionally, because of dogs being pack animals, being alone is not good for most of them, so if you dont want your dog to be alone, you need a work that allows you to take your dog with you or a person caring for it during day. And a dog needs far more food. ^^ (At least real dogs, not "blood dogs" = a dog that bleeds when you step on him.)
And a dog must be trained and educated. A naughty cat is annoying. A naughty dog is dangerous. Being "nice" in general simply isnt sufficient, until a certain size. One of our neighbors had a Rottweiler or Doberman (the more thinner ones of them) and when they drove on holiday, an aunt of them (having on her own Lassies) should care for the Doberman. Because of the dog not being educated in any way, the moment he saw a rabbit, the dog jumped after it, with the aunt still on the lash, and she broke her hand. The following two weeks, my family cared for the dog. So he was not dangerous to me in any way, so socially nice, but had no education at all. Whenever he saw anything like other dogs, cat rabbits he was doing chaos, pressing forward, nearly strangulating himself, while you pushed with all force into the other direction. And every person, even strangers, he wanted to jump. Nice for the owner, that he is being so strong, that this is no problem for him, but then he shall take his dog with him into holiday, and not leave it to an 65 year old lady. -.-
I like both dogs and cats, but I prefer cats. The main reason being that I know how to "connect" with them.
In fact, my best friend was my "pet" cat until she died 2 years ago. I remember how we would just look into eachothers eyes, and blink and stuff, and the love flowed.

I don't know why... but something about the OP has been bothering me... but there is not a majority of americans own dogs... combining both cats and dogs, there are 39% of homes that have either... Slightly more of these are dog homes, but many more cat people own more than one cat, where most dog people do not...
If given my druthers, i am a ferret person, because ferrets are the best (and worst) of both
