No ... I am not narcissistic at all! See? This on-line quiz says so, and we all know that subjective on-line self-evaluations never lie, right?

... but the people who take those tests often do ...

So, did anyone in this thread lie?

How would we know? More to the point, why does it matter?

I would expect it to pop up on the spectrum every so often, though, as a defense. Narcissism happens when you want to fight the feeling that you're worthless, and swing too far to the other side, believing yourself perfect, superior, and incapable of failure. The trouble is that any time you get some sort of proof that you are actually not perfect, whether somebody is telling you you've messed up or whether you've actually messed up, it's a real threat to your self-image because it makes you scared of feeling worthless once again. It is a sort of black-and-white thing, either you're perfect or you're lower than dirt.

Solution would be--learning to see your value as unconnected to your abilities or your degree of perfection, learning to see others' value as similar to your own, learning to celebrate others' abilities as well as your own. A lot more of a stable perspective than the idea that you are infallible and a lot less anxiety-provoking.

So why would someone lie?... Because maybe they want to see how other people respond to an unusually low or high score, or because they're joking or being sarcastic, or because they are driven to answer in "socially appropriate" ways that don't reflect their real opinions. Not exactly much of a threat to anybody who's just trying to find out more about themselves.

I asked largely because I agree with what you posted here, although I wasn't sure how to explain it. I could not see the point of mentioning that one can lie on a self-assessment unless one thought that someone actually did lie for some reason.

I got a 5 though some questions I could have been just as truthfull with the other option, but knowing what the test was about in advance probably made me choice the least narcissistic option when the choice could have gone either way.

I cannot understand why I only got a 1 for self sufficiency, I do everything myself, even my own plumbing, I build my own Motorcycles out of spare parts, I must be one of the most self-sufficiency inclined people on the planet, when I retire I want to go live in the woods with the Wolves.
Yet they gave me a 2 for superiority? how can you ever feel superior when your own Mother brings you up in a lessor position than the family dog?

Authority

Authority refers to a person's leadership skills and power. People who score higher on authority like to be in charge and gain power, often for power's sake alone.

Self-Sufficiency

This trait refers to how self-sufficient a person is, that is, how much you rely on others versus your own abilities to meet your needs in life.

Superiority

This trait refers to whether a person feels they are more superior than those around them.

Exhibitionism

This trait refers to a person's need to be the center of attention, and willingness to ensure they are the center of attention (even at the expense of others' needs).

Exploitativeness

This trait refers to how willing you are to exploit others in order to meet your own needs or goals.

Vanity

This trait refers to a person's vanity, or their belief in one's own superior abilities and attractiveness compared to others.

Entitlement

This trait refers to the expectation and amount of entitlement a person has in their lives, that is, unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with one's expectations. People who score higher on this trait generally have a greater expectation of entitlement, while those who score lower expect little from others or life.
