English, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish are the 3 most commonly spoken languages on this planet and English is pervasive throughout the modern world, whether you like it or not. Russian, French and German are used significantly less, so anyone who learns those languages better have a damn good reason.
All I can tell you is that British DO learn French and German. Americans don't.
We are kinda isolated from the world. But in Texas 25% the population does speak Spanish so I'm intereseted in learning but not studied in awhile.
Are you sure we are isolated from the world? I thought America runs the world. And doesn't even bother to learn their languages ...

America may rule the world. But WP members are not America or in power postions. I am surounded by people who speak Spanish
so learning Spanish makes sense for me any other lang makes no sense for me.

How about the quote from the other guy who seems to support english-only policy:

So as I see one needs to keep changing their story if one is to try to justify the unspoken rule.

Spain is no bigger than any other county in Europe. The reason you are surrounded by people from Spain is that Columbus was from Spain so Spanish ppl populated America. In other words you are again basing things on your American background.

Spain is actually much bigger than most of them. In fact, the only countries in the 25-member EU that are bigger, in terms of population and economics are; Germany, UK, France and Italy, in that order. That is just the European Union, there are many more smaller countries in Eastern Europe.
Columbus was from Genoa (modern day Northern Italy). He sailed from Spain. The reason why Spanish is #3 in the world is because of Latin America's rather sizeable population and geographic size. Some languages are simply more worth learning than others, this isn't a difficult concept. In my case; learning Russian for example makes little sense as I seldom deal with Russian-speakers, however, learning English for you or TheMachine1 learning Spanish is perfectly logical. Perhaps in an ideal world we would all know the 1 standard language or we could just "upload" languages directly into our minds, but that day is far away. In the meantime, people need to be selective and learn what's in their best interests.

So you first said German and French isn't worth learning, and now you are saying that Germany and France are bigger than Spain after all.

Well if we are talking about what "makes mroe sense" then where do you draw a line to determine which threads to close and which not to? So you are saying that Spanish language thread you will let stay while other ones you will close. Well thats your personal opinion. Someone else might have different opinon. So that is really not where a mod can just walk by and close the thread.

I say if there is another Russian speaker then you should both post in the Foreign Laugauge forum. People who post all in Spanish should post there to.

Stop trolling, you know what I said. If you've forgotten, reread it.

I can't remember saying that. Perhaps you shouldn't put words in people's mouths.
This is an English-language site, as you have been told REPEATEDLY, so everything that wasn't English would be moved. Closing is too much IMO, unless of course there was no "International section" and thus nowhere for it to be moved to.

Yeah, they probably should have moved it and not closed it, but the bottom line is that Alex has entrusted them with the role of moderator, so if they do something you don't like it's tough noogies. Remember this site is private property, it's not state-property, the admin and mods are not accountable to you or me or any of the other members, deal with it. In the words of Eric Cartman, "Respect ma authoritah!! !"

Well what if we both have a reason to be on this forum. May be this Asperger forum happened to be better than Russian language one.
By the way, do you read every single post in this forum? I don't -- I don't have time to. So, even when I write in english I am only talking to a small set of people who happened to want to read what I write. When in Russian, same thing, except that this group of people might be much smaller.

The difference is that the English post has much more potential to be read and understood than the Russian, Spanish, German, French or Swahili post.

Cool and if it isn't understood so what? There is nothing deragotory in being misunderstood.

Exactly, so if this site is that much better than the Russian-language one (which doesn't surprise me one bit) shouldn't you be willing to make some compromises? What are exactly are you trying to accomplish here? Flaimbaiting by attacking American customs? Trying to impose Russian onto everyone?

No, I didn't say that english speaking sites are better than russian speaking ones. I am saying WHAT IF it HAPPENED to be better. By the way if the American were excluded from Russian site by rationalization that there are plenty of english speaking sites for them to go to, I would ask the opposite question: what if Russian site happened to be better?

I would. But since administrators of this board are alive people rather than robots, I might also try to talk to them, too.
andy1976uk wrote:

In my original post, it was just fun little post. But after it got deletted then I wanted to speak my mind about it. I agree it is not an issue of life and death, but I guess I might as well speak my mind.
andy1976uk wrote:

The former is closer than the latter. I am not imposing Russian; I am un-imposing English and trying to make a point that any and every language should be acceptable.

As you're relatively new here you probably don't realise that the general autism discussion forum used to be called simply general discussions. If you've been posting here a long time it's quite easy to fall into the trap of starting threads based on that original labelling.
As for Roman's Russian thread, I don't see what the big problem is. However, I do see a worrying trend, recently, for mods to act just because they can, rather than because they should. A taste of the bad old days, kind of thing. You could have gone to a translation site and got the gist of the stuff he posted in a few minutes. You could have then sent him a PM to tell him you were moving the thread to the foreign languages (or whatever it's called) forum, though I'm sure it could reasonably be argued that it could have been left where it was. Perhaps if it had been, then Roman would have translated it, and thus initiated a discussion on the merits of the sentiments it conveyed. People don't like having their threads locked, edited or deleted.
This thread also demonstrates why certain contributers should never be allowed to become moderators here.

Guilty conscience?
I don't wish to be accused of trolling, flaming, or some other internet faux pas, so will leave it at that.
I do not know about Andy but I would not have lock that cats thread. I do not care about rules or pedantism. I was explaining to
him why it was locked and how to avoid having a thread locked.
If I was a moderator my first act would be to never moderate anything.
