Frankly, I'm a bit baffled as to how one can use irony. Irony just happens.

Now recognizing it, yeah... I can see that.

yeah, I can go with that, I don't have the power to wield irony

Ah, to weild irony. That could be a superhero.

Like other responses here, I can use it but not really understand, unless someone uses a very obvious vioce tone. Most of the time, I'll just stare at someone dumbfounded, and ask if they are serious.

Totally. Me.
My brother was talking about a music group called Thousand Foot Crutch or something and I was like "what?" He had to explicitly tell me it was a music group. My dad is huge on sarcasm and joking so half of our conversation is Dad:[joke] Me: wait, seriously?
And my lil sis has a bff whose thing is being extremely sarcastic without changing anything about her demeanor. She confuses me a lot.
But when I can tell its being used, it cracks me up.
I prefer wordplay though. And sitcom. Like AFV.

Same here. I can be quite sarcastic at times, but I have a tendency to miss it when it's embedded in a conversation.

My favorite bumper sticker is "Honk if you can tell the difference between sarcasm and irony!"

...But getting back to the original question-- I find that I sometimes have trouble 'switching gears' when it comes to sarcasm and irony. Not sure exactly how to explain it, but if I'm in a certain mindset, sarcasm or irony will bounce right off me. OTOH in the polar opposite mindset I might become unable or unwilling to say anything serious, and try to construct endless chains of irony/sarcasm.

Are people clicking on the last option because they understand it or because they're taking it literally?

I can't answer for everyone else, but I clicked it because I got it. Then again, DO we need another poll? ;)

I get and use sarcasm quite well, although my peers might say I use it a little TOO often; a yes on irony too, but not as much.

I often pretend that I don`t understand that someone talks sarcastically. I just don`t find it funny although I can recognize it. I perceive it as a cheap way to feel superior to the person you are using it on. It`s just not constructive. But maybe this just proves that I don`t "get it".

I grew up around it. My mother's family is extremely sarcastic. I didn't like it when they used sarcasm when I was little but I understand it now and I've grown to appreciate it.
