Ezra reminded of a situation at age 13 where my undiagnosed Autism was a factor in helping me. It was different then kids went out after school until dinner time without any supervision, parents did not know what what we were doing no texting, phone cameras, or camaras all over the place period. Teens went out after dinner unsupervised until curfew which was around 10 or 11 at night. Kids went on public transportation at age 12 to the mall, and to concerts at age 15 or so unsupervised. And nobody knew about HFA/Aspergers.
They had a type of summer camp then for 13 year olds where you took day trips to the amusement park, beach, baseball game, concert etc. my parents sent me there to thinking I would make friends. It did kind of work, the kids were much nicer then the bullies in school. Once in July and once in August there was a 3 night trip. The trip for August 1971 was Boston. The "supervision" was stoned out hippie counselors. We stayed in the dorms of Simmons college 3 blocks from Fenway Park (Paaaark) home of Boston Red Sox baseball team. You can imagine what happens when you have 13 year olds hundreds of miles from home. There is a story for the adult section but that is for another day. For this story the important thing is that I was up all night. We had a day activity, we came back to the dorm at 4 and were told to be on the bus at 4:30 for an evening trip to an amusement park. I fell asleep, woke up at 7:30 and quickly figured out the group had left without me. Most 13 year olds left alone in a strange city even then would freak out. But Autistic me likes doing things by myself so I had an opportunity and took it. I told the campus guard where I was going, told him to call the group and walked the 3 blocks to Fenway bought a ticket from a scalper who was my age and enjoyed a baseball game (California Angels 4, Boston Red Sox 3 Yastrzemski home run)in another city which was a big deal. Now if this happened it would have went immediately viral, the media would be following the bus home and me coming back from the game, people would be fired, maybe jailed and the program would be shut down. But this is now, that was 1971. To the other boys I was a hero and was mobbed like a rock star. The counselors asked me not to tell anyone and I was happy to oblige. Bieng trated like the Beatles was heady stuff for a 13 year old who was usually bullied, why would I want the people who made it possible to get in trouble? I never told my parents about it until I was in college.
Nobody I knew got abducted. People got killed because they or somebody else was driving drunk, stoned or both.
