One phrase I hear occasionally is the casual greeting, "What do you say?"

It may be a Southern US thing, but since I'm inclined to answer questions literally, it's nearly impossible to reply in passing in any fashion that makes logical sense. About the best I can do is a generic "Hey," or I could jokingly reply, "Lots of things. Which ones do you want to hear about?"

Obviously I realize it's an expression and not a genuine inquiry into my thoughts on anything, but it still results in some awkward moments as I stumble to organize my thoughts.

I don't hear that phrase around here, but I have a similar difficulty with "What do you know?" I know it's meant as a greeting, but it always makes me pause when thinking of how best to respond.

You do hear that one around here, too. I think the phrase I mentioned may be mostly limited to the South. But it's the same sort of meaningless query that doesn't expect a meaningful response.

Here in NYC, it's "What's up?", "How's it going?"

If somebody thinks you're thinking too much, he/she would ask "Penny for your thoughts?"

I've heard the penny expression before, but generally assumed the inquirer really wants to know what I'm thinking about. Maybe not.

"I see".

I see what? means that it's that right or wrong, or you just understood? "I see" sounds to me like "I will just keep my opinion of that BS for my own". But maybe isn't that bad? It's neutral?! :x Be fuc**** clear, please!

"You shouldn't be that aggressive / you should be a bit more friendly". Aggressive???? I said something a bit rough and I realised, and then I made some jokes trying to make it not sound too serious. I don't see aggression there. If I ever want to be aggressive, you'll notice, don't worry.

In which sort of planet we live that joking (with a relative!) can be considered aggressive, "I see" can be a way to express dislike, and a smile can be used to say "leave me in peace"?

PLEASE GIVE ME A DICTIONARY TO UNDERSTAND PEOPLE!

Calm down.

I don't get it. When has it EVER made someone calm down?

"Real World"

What the f**k does that phrase mean anyway? The world is made up of different cultures, beliefs and ideas. Telling one to get in the real world makes no sense and the world changes over time anyway. How does one get in the "real world?"

"Pull your socks up."

I know what it means, but please, don't say it to me. I don't like it. I don't understand where it comes from. I don't want to hear it. And what's more: I don't wear socks. I wear tights.

and that old favourite:

"Cheer up."

I'm not "cheered down" thank you very much.

See also: "Get over it."

I'm not aware that I ever got under it.

'A penny for your thoughts' is one I used to hear a lot here in England when I was young but I don't hear it so much now. I sometimes used to answer that my thoughts weren't worth a penny. I was usually annoyed by this one but I did understand what they wanted. I just struggled for an answer.
'Cheer up it might never happen' is an expression I truly hate. I've heard it too many times. Apparently my face doesn't betray how I feel because when I hear this expression I'm almost invariably happy. In fact, sometimes I was amazed to hear it because I thought I had a big smile on my face.

The one that used to drive me crazy was "How's your love life?" Fortunately I haven't heard that one for years and I don't miss it.

"You can't blame me for trying" - sure I can, nice way of trying to skirt responsibility.

Pick-up lines. Bonus annoyance points if they are corny and/or cliche.

Anything corny and/or cliche just makes me want to scream. Platitudes too.
