-Crowds, restaurants, shopping centres and public food eating areas are usually difficult to deal with.

-Sounds of people eating (chewing, grinding- especially at the sight of people chewing with their mouth open)

- Vacuums, coffee machines, mixers and blenders- just the sound of them. Doesn't help that I used to zuigerphobic as a child, and admittedly still am a bit- I still have a strong hatred of them anyway.

- Motorbikes aren't great, but I've gotten more used to the sound of them these days.

- Gum, the smell and sight of gum- I just can't stand it.

-Speaking of smells I hate, the smell of cucumber, gherkins, pickles, salad dressing, HP brown sauce, red, green and yellow peppers, and vinegar.

-Open market food stalls and places where there are a lot of food options laid out near each other, just the amount of smells at the same time is a bit much for me and I find it overwhelming.

- The look of lettuce. I hate how it curls around and it makes me feel sick just looking at it.

-Whistling, especially high pitched whistling, ugh.

-A lot of people talking at the same time.

-Loud music.

-Sharp and spicy, sometimes sour tastes- especially citrus-I usually have to put water in my drink when I have lemonade, and I can't even drink that Fanta lime stuff- I tried once but I found it difficult, I had to water it down a lot.

-Scratchy clothes

-When people lean too close to me, it freaks me out.

- I'd be here all day if I listed all the foods I hate, I'm definitely a picky eater.

I hate gum too :D . When you mention sharp tastes, do you find that soda is too sharp? I can never drink soda lol.

By soda I'm guessing you mean fizzy drinks, and if so- yes. I don't really drink soda or energy drinks, sometimes I have lemonade (usually with water) and Fanta (orange, not that lime stuff- the lime stuff I find too strong). But generally, I tend to find that stuff too sharp, so I prefer things that others may consider "plain".

I'm the same with food, some say it's boring, but I like it. :)

At least someone else gets the gum thing. *shivers*

I would say my most sensitive senses are (in order from most sensitive to least)

- Hearing, smell, sight, touch, cold, hot, pain.

I'm definitely over affected by noises, smells and sights, now and then touch- but I would say that I'm somewhat under-sensitive to pain and heat. I mean I can feel pain and heat, but my body is usually slow to acknowledge it- especially pain. I'm not sure whether my under-reaction has been learnt, from the bullying I went through, or if I've always been this way.

I definitely like only "plain" food and drinks as well. I would say my most sensitive senses from most sensitive to least are touch, hearing, sight, proprioceptive, taste/smell, pain, cold, heat. I'm sorry you were bullied- that must have been hard to go through. I also like eating the same thing a lot.

Yeah, I usually end up eating the same thing quite a bit, but I do try to be as healthy as I can be regardless. Growing up I was considered something of a nuisance due to how fussy I am, and now all I seem to get is "You are grown up now, stop acting like a young child!" or "Why haven't you grown out of this?".

It's alright, the bullying happened awhile ago and I don't mind talking about it. Feel free to send me a message if you like.

- Any kind of multitasking is almost impossible for me, but especially when it comes to speech, whether it's listening to more than one conversation, or reading/writing while there is talking/music with lyrics at the same time. Makes it impossible to process thoughts.

- Crowded places, having to squeeze in closely with strangers, all the noise and different smells (perfumes, BO, etc)...

- Certain materials, like velvet and chenille, feel disgusting to me. Also agreed on someone's post about turtlenecks, can't stand anything tight around my throat, and cut tags out of almost everything I own.

- Bright lights, especially if overhead, give me headaches. I can feel them beating down on me, and notice every flicker.

- Strong preference for plain/simple foods, although I am working on this. Still can't stand certain textures (like mushrooms or viscous sauces) but trying to eat more 'complex' foods like Indian curry, which I have started to enjoy.

- Loud mechanical sounds, like motorbikes, leaf blowers, big blenders, vacuum cleaners, etc. ESPECIALLY the Xlerator hand dryer. When I was a kid using public restrooms, I used to hide in my stall, hands clamped around my ears, waiting until people stopped drying their hands so that I could 'escape'.

I also used to hate public restrooms (still do). I wonder if it had something to do with those horrible hand dryers. Another thing I hate is when people talk to you in the restroom lol. I am not really great at multitasking either.

Public restrooms are disgusting. All my worst nightmares (of the gross-out variety) involve public restrooms. People think toilets are places to dump various items of a personal nature. I also hate when people don't flush.

Don't worry- you're not alone. I couldn't use a public restroom until age 8, and even now, I never use them unless I really have to go.

My senses are sensitive in a variety of ways and has a variation of intensities. Don't always know what is causing a bad day or a good day -- just have to figure out how to deal with it myself. The most recent example:

I had my tractor serviced & it was brought back to me a day late on Friday. That started a whole cascade of problems, because I was racing the weather to get things done before the forecast of rain came true. Deadlines stress me out, but I am very good about getting jobs done if I don't have to rely on other people. Other people always mess up my schedule. That makes me angry & sets my sensitivities on high.

There was a safety switch that needed replaced on my tractor. I don't think they actually replaced it, they just "fixed" it. Saturday I was doing work in my yard, & soon as the switch was jostled it went out again. I was angry because had just mixed a lot of concrete & needed to drive it up a hill to where I was going to dump it. My tractor wouldn't start, due to the safety switch going out. It was 90 degrees Fahrenheit, & wearing cotton clothing to cover all my skin, including my face, to protect from the sun, & a hat.

I tried pushing & pulling the cart up the hill, but it was too difficult. I ran to a neighbor's house but he didn't answer the door. Another neighbor, an old man, asked what I was doing. I tried telling him about the tractor & concrete but I was having a hard time talking. That always happens when I physically exert myself -- can not talk & work at the same time.

He followed me to my backyard & he helped me push the cart to where I needed to dump the concrete. Then filled the cart again 2 more times & finally got the concrete all out of the mixer. I yelled at this old man a couple times because he kept talking & asking me questions that I wasn't able to answer, due to being too hot, out of breath, frustrated, etc. I said I was sorry, but don't think he understood why I couldn't communicate. It was awful. It is always awful, because that happens every time I try to work with other people -- which is why I avoid it if at all possible.

I'm usually by myself, because getting along with others is nearly impossible with my sensory issues making communication very difficult.

I know how you feel. Sensory issues make communicating very difficult. I go nonverbal when I get too overwhelmed.

My sensory issues mostly have to do with sight. I can't stand seeing certain textures. If I see them, I can feel them, and that's even worse than actually touching them. Chaotic scenes overwhelm me to the point of physical exhaustion. Places where the lighting is unusual is also hard to process - places with uneven or colored lighting, for example. Flashing lights drive me crazy, too. I have some minor problems dealing with sound - mostly echoing and collections of voices - and motion, but I have those problems under control. It's really just light and visual chaos that makes life difficult. I'm considering getting some lightly color-tinted lenses. I imagine that if everything's the same, pleasant color, the world will be easier to process.

I've heard of the tinted lenses before; they seem to be quite helpful for a lot of people. Do you have problems with bright lights as well?

Colored lenses don't make everything 1 color. I have light yellow lenses, & but still see rainbow color variation. Although, I only wear them in my house. I always wear dark sunglasses (prescription) outside my house, even at school, because light brighter than 40W bulbs gives me head & eye aches. I only use low watt bulbs in my house.

yeah well some of us "rest" by having long conversations.

seriously they act like it takes them more energy to be quiet, than it does to talk loudly for a long time.

Mmm...it's hard to say. The type of light seems to matter more than the level of brightness. Sunlight is very easy for me to process, no matter how bright.

That's true, but I think the colored tint they do supply is enough to suit my purposes. When I shutdown, I can only process shades of brown. The other colors "go away" - kind of. Brown seems to be my "safe color." It's hard to explain, but I'm hoping to artificially create that calmer atmosphere. Even if they don't prevent overloads, perhaps having the world slightly more brown will make it easier to process, preventing a shutdown.
