Faithfilly,

Thanks for your words of support.

I am the Publisher, I have considered a fur cover, but that costs.

I am also the main advertiser. Fine art prints, pre-press for books.

Maybe a spinning fan hologram cover.

For now, just good quality fine art paper, a smooth watercolor surface.

Arts, writing, stories of single minds that changed the world.

We are a world unto ourselves.

Gosh I hope you get this online magazine/book whatever going! I have been fighting for yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeears for my daughter and I had my own problems when I was younger never knowing that my yearning for someone to just "beam me up" from this armpit of the universe was that I had an actual "problem". I don't consider it a problem just that our society has to label everything that isn't the majorities "norm". I hate labels. I like to think that I am just wired different. I happen to be a special education aide and work with autistic and asperger children. I have always felt I understand them better than anyone and as some say, "you speak there language susz". Well now I know why. :) They are and anyone with that diagnosis are the best fricken people I have ever met. The school my daughter goes to had her labeled ADHD and wanted her immediately on ritalin...I have fought for years and told them I know she is an aspie.....they didn't believe me because she is female, has average intelligence and no signs (to them) of social problems. She has had enormous amounts of social issues and obsessions like animals! When something is wrong or she is upset with someone she can't stop talking about it and practically stalks them until it's FIXED. I could go on and on and on but people need to hear the truth and not what the fricken medical book teaches them. My sister is a doctor and thinks she knows everything about this. She thought there was no way my daughter can have aspergers because she doesnt' isolate herself..she is obsessed with making and keeping friends. It's a every day issue. Not all kids isolate themselves, mostly boys and I believe its after years of rejection and bullying. I dont know.....any input?

I can't wait for your magazine!! ! I write in associated content myself.

I agree. Aspies don't isolate themselves, they get isolated by others.

My daughter, who is now a grown aspie, was the same way, growing up. She never isolated herself too much. She was always outgoing, seeking to make friends, and at age 17 even put together a talent show with very little help. But the differences are glaringly obvious when she can't hold a job, or has dating problems. Myself, also an aspie, was very outgoing until well in my thirties. But I am noticing an increased tendency to isolate myself, only because I am so tired of my overtures of friendship being misunderstood, or rejected, or even worse, find myself being used or propositioned. Like you, I don't feel that I have a problem. It's usually the reactions of others that makes it into a problem.

I have ordered the Publisher 2007 software to begin putting this together.Still wiating for more specific instructions from Inventor,a working title(I am really stuck on the concept of Syssiphus because he was punished by the "gods" for stealing fire from them and bringing it to humans,I would love to see an image of him, unbound from the chains and feeding a fish,he used his intellect to catch to the eagle which has been eating his liver)Anyone care to draw something like this?

I have started a page on Moli.com,will post a link here for subscriptions and submissions.I hope you have all been fevorishly writing and creating your works of art to submit? If not....please get started. If we can create this and build a solid subscription base....the magazine will improve. At present we are operating on a nill budget, hoping subscriptions will cover the cost of printing until we can get more advertising base....(which we cant get without larger subscription...ah,the wonders of catch 22 business cycle.)Inventor is the brains behind the publishing and business.Nanarob is helping with editing and planning WHEN she returns form Vietnam(I did not give her permission to go on vacation  ,but she seems to think visiting her daughter is a priority,oh well).

For the computer literate(not me,I assure you),there are some good examples of the kind of web page we could use to advertise our magazine on Moli.com.Please check it out and let me know if you think you can design a similiar page for us.We need a safe way to take submissions for the people interested in editing articles and art.I dont want to risk getting or spreading a virus from a malitious CAN/DANite when they get wind of the fact that autistics want to talk for themselves...could put them out of business, and believe me,they ARE a business interested in money....we could be a threat to that and I dont think I'm being paranoid to point this out?

I don't think you're being paranoid to point that out! I think half those curebies have issues, anyway. This is starting to sound really exciting. I will look through my writings and think about things to submit.

Publishing is moving along, if I had something to print.

Ads and order can come later, ten copies is a magazine, and better the second issue.

There is a voice here that has not been heard.

I started in books with an inkjet and Kinko's, it sold, and in time bought a top of the line Laserjet and 24" roll color printer. So we are starting from a higher level.

Most of publishing is pre-press. Stories, photos, drawings, layout, to reach camera ready, with cameras no longer involved. Digital has changed everything.

My setup is limited by speed, but a hundred copies is not a problem, 500-1000 is. For that I use a print shop.

Starting is not hard. For one, all Copyrights are retained by the writer, photographer, artist. We are just one time use. Like WP, a further use for the best of, reprints, but all the rest belongs to the original producer, which includes reprinting in another medium.

Being Inventor I am very protective of Intellectual Property. I know the field well. You can publish under your own name, or your writer name, or your WP name, it is all the same.

I see the voice of 2,000,000 in the US, that has not been heard, there is a quazy medical point of view, a kill them all point of view, and both dehumanize us.

We are just plain people, and if they would stop jabbing us with pointed sticks everything would be fine.

On a recent thread Dr. Ed, who was a Professor, did not do well with live aspies. He wrote the Dx. He knew nothing. Tony Attwood is better, sees aspies as human, and is helping rather than treating.

The world is changing in our favor, and by self defining we can speed the process.

We do have the best seats in the house, and the brains, so let's use them.

well,it's been slow going,I thank everyone who has sustained their interest during the construction phase of this, but we ow have someone working on a web page to subscribe and submit art/articles.It will have more specifics about the magazine,so we wont have to take up WP space on this project(though,I was hoping on getting avertising here if Alex ever gets back to me...busy guy  ).

As soon as the web site is up I will post a link here and put one in my sig for anyone interested.Anyonoe else who wouldnt mind putting a link in their sig, would be appriciated,as we all respond to different threads here.

Thanks again for those who have shown an interest and your support.I am very hopeful that we can make this into a "professional looking mag",over time.I am busy trying to learn "publisher software" for layout design, hope to have some submissions to work with soon.

Hiya

I had this idea a few months ago, and hope to put it into practice, but trying to pluck up the courage is hard. I've got a design ready, and have a general idea about content and sections within the zine, but I'm not sure if any publisher will take it on.

I'll probably start a thread on it soon

Should post on here more often

A few weeks ago (please see article on "AS And The Relativity Of Time," which will be written when I find the time. ), an idea struck me. I believe it was the "end result" of a year of research and obsession about AS and the AS community. The idea is to create a magazine by and about people on the spectrum. My online research has uncovered one well-kept secret: Aspies want to speak, not be spoken for.

We do have some books written from the perspective of a handful of autistics that are then generalized to be appropriate to understand ALL AS. We have many bloggers and a few online communities where AS people can share their experiences and offer support. But the only magazines I could find about AS were written FOR "professionals, parents, teachers, care workers" and are "curbbie-dominated" and NT-biased. Now, the most logical reason for this lack of a magizine of our own,is that nobody wants or needs one. Well, I do. I have learned to embrace the computer, but I do think that one form of communication does not have to negate the importance of another form. I think there is room for both. Perhaps it is because I wasn't weaned on code, but I still enjoy the tactile sensation of holding written words in my hands and looking at pictures and writing that isn't glowing. As a writer and "artist," I think my creation becomes more "real" if it is tangible and not lost in the millions of bits of info stored online.

Mission statement/goal:

A magazine designed by, written for and about people on the autism spectrum, but not necessarily about AS.

There would be some articles about traits of AS and co-morbid disorders, but this would only be a part of the magizine, as it is only a "part" of who we are as people with atypical neurology. The majority of the magazine would feature arts, crafts, writing, analytical thought, obsessions, and interests of people on the spectrum. I'm thinking...lots of pictures, comics, humour ramblings, short bios, serial stories, highlights of craft projects, feature "obsession" of the month, reviews of scientific articles, movies, books, music and "computer/science/maths/geek of the week." Think of it as "Highlights for Aspies."

What is happening with this? Is it still going ahead?

I ask because if it's fallen apart, I have a website of my own, http://www.spectrumized.co.uk (also potentially directed to by .net, .info, .org and .com, as I own those variant extentions too) which could easily be donated to the cause. I have actually been keen to start a project like this myself - it's right up my alley.

Of course, if you are still very much working on it, krex, I do not intend to impinge on you or step on anyone's toes! But I would be keen to get this moving. I'm a psychology/computing/graphics student with a side interest in autism journalism, so you can see why I have an interest!

And also I'm a person with AS, which is probably the larger qualification!

So, what's happening?
