I voted too soon. At first I saw her always going to the left. Then upon watching it further, I saw her go to the right. You ought to revise your first post to say that you need to watch it for a couple of minutes, to give it a chance to change.

I don't think there is any way to "make" her spin one way or the other. I've sat and watched it for a long time and the graphic very obviously changes direction at random times. The switch happens on the back of the spin at a point where the image looks the same either way, that way you can't detect when she switches direction until the spin starts again.

I'm assuming that the .gif image was designed with the switches at unpredictable times, however, there is a finite number of frames in an animated .gif so there would have to be a repeating pattern.

It works for me like that too.

At first I only could see her go counterclockwise and took me a while to see her go clockwise until I scrolled down and up.

awesome!! while looking at them side by side, i could see one spinning one way, and the other spinning the other way at the same time.. but only if i focused in the middle.. and let them be in my peripheral view... does that mean i was using both sides of my brain at the same time?? XD

Very interesting.
I believe the lines on the legs that were added make it seem like both images are spinning in different direction each.

I think I found the trick of how this illusion is done, you can change the direction in your mind easily by following her raised leg, she doesn't actually spin, starting from when she is completely facing you, she turns at one direction 90 degrees then she changes and turns 180 degrees to the other direction, then she turns 180 degrees back and so on, giving the illusion of spinning.

That might be one way. Someone else posted the solution, and it worked for me.

It's really an optical illusion.

If you look at the top right corner, she will spin in one direction, and if you look at the other top corner, she spins in the other direction.

If you glance back and forth at each corner, she will appear to spin back and forth without completing a rotation.

No, it's definitely an optical illusion.

One of my coworkers had this on his computer once. He, I, and a third person all watched it together at the same time. He saw it moving one direction only. I saw it moving moving mostly the opposite direction and switching occasionally. The third person saw it switching constantly.

It goes both counterclock-wise and clockwise. I counted to see if there was some sort of pattern, but it was completely random, it was like: cw-16, ccw-50, cw-51, ccw-27, cw-57, then I stopped counting....

My brain @_@

I can only see it counter-clockwise...I tried as hard as I could, but couldn't get it to switch at all.

Even after looking at the solution, I can kind of see the clockwise one, but if you watch her foot, it seems as though she suddenly shifts her weight backward, which is very unnatural for a figure that should be holding perfectly still while rotating. My brain goes "No!" and it switches right back to counter-clockwise.

Actually, now that I look at it again, the counter-clockwise one does the same thing :x Well dang.

Woah 8O I tried that "looking at the top-right corner" trick and finally got her to switch =)

Set up the window so that you can only see her legs and below, not even a glimpse of her hands.

She doesn't spin in a circle! She goes to the left, and then to the right, and then to the left and so on.
