I hate shopping too. I wish I could just go in the store alone after hours, with no salespeople or customers there.

I hate shopping. People are always really obnoxious in the stores. Besides, everything is too noisy and busy.

Siuan, hats off to you for even attempting what you did. Not even on my best day could I ever envision not only going shopping alone with my 2 ASD kids, but to a dept. store AND Wal-mart. Wow.

Yeah, it can be a challenge for sure. Fortunately they are very well-behaved kids, so I'm quite lucky there. We must look silly though, all of us covering our ears in unison when voices start booming over the speakers. Yep, I do it, and I don't give a nickel what people think when they see me do it either :P

I'm bringing my ipod when it's time to get a baby shower gift for my SIL so I can use it to drown out the noise of screaming kids who nearly run into you with those Heeleys. I don't mind babies crying, it's just the unruly kids whose parents don't teach proper behavior that are annoying.

It might have been funny, after they did that you screamed "WAIT, I'M ALLERGIC TO THAT!" and faked having Anphalactic shock.

I actually did that once... I'm very sensitive to odors and textures, and one day this woman came over to me waving a card in my face, despite my very obvious efforts to avoid her, with some hideous perfume on it. I was like, "No, please don't! I'm allergic!" and I started gasping and gagging. The look on her face was priceless.

I remember another shopping incident, where we were going up the escalator ramp, the ones that look like sloped conveyor belts at Wal-Mart. The lady in front of me had just gotten off, and for some strange reason, had stopped right in front of the escalator. She did give me enough room to get off, but she just stood there, and figuring since she wasn't going to move (and I was probably going to get in the way of someone else getting off the escalator), I'd slip past her around the side as best I could--I wasn't carrying much, so it wouldn't be a big deal, but after I tried to, she said "Don't push!" I didn't have time to deal with her, so I walked away, but if I could, I'd tell her that she was getting in the way.

Yeah if Im trying to shop somewhere in my area I cant enter the store without smoking beforehand. It calmed me down a great deal. I stopped recently though and its been a very long time since I left the house besides going to my therapist. Its always fairly calming there so its not nearly as hard. Its weird though, I also dont feel nearly as stressed out if Im shopping in a store thats far away from where I live too. hrm.

Walmart in my area is open 24 hours a day--- best time to go is at night, after the drunks are gone but before the morning shoppers wake up. Usually about 3-5AM is best. Most of the employees ( not as many as during the day) are still stocking and trying to stay awake, there are hardly any screaming kids(or adults) present. No lines to the registers, either. Shopping at night is also nice because your car won't be hot when you get back to it, which means your ice cream might make it home in a nice, frozen state. There's usually a cop parked outside the Walmart, too, so it's usually relatively safe ( nothing is ever FULLY safe.).
I suppose if you have to bring the kids with you then night-shopping might be difficult, but it really is a much nicer and peaceful experience than battling the hordes of shoppers during the day.
I'm already dreading the upcoming X-mas season--- it'll get busy even at night!

I HATE it. I especially hate the mall on Fridays and Saturdays. I tend to like it on mornings during the weekdays, but I don't like clothes shopping. I enjoy visting at Barnes and Noble but I usually read without buying any of the books. I like food shopping because colors and shapes of the fruits and vegetables interest me. I can spend the most time at Yankee Candle because I love the idea of selling scent. Oddly enough, Bath and Body Works bothers me.

I like stationery shops. That is about the only type of shop I like.

internet shopping is the way forward! i try to do all my non clothes shopping this way, no social interaction neccessary. being quite sensitve to material though i have to try clothes on before i buy them as there are many i can not stand & so then going shopping is neccessary. i just get it done as quickly as possible, often on my own so i dont have to wait for anyone else to decide on what they want & only in the shops i know so i at least have some familiarity. also shopping earlyish morning is good as there are less crowds. i also try to pay with exact money or with my card so i dont have to worry about checking change whilst i am being watched by check out person & people in the ques behind me!

Add to all that horror an inability to make decisions! I'll avoid shopping as much as I possibly can for as long as I can.

 Yeah, the inability to make decisions thing makes it all worse. I can only make decisions easily if it's between two obvious choices, or I happen to have a feeling about it.

I'm not as bad with it as the original poster, but I do dislike it.

-takes away from time I could be doing something interesting
-I don't like having to deal with the other people there, although it's not super horrible as there's an expected way you're going to interact with the checkout people, etc. Still, it's a bit draining.
-I've got OCD, so I'm not crazy about having to touch the dirty cart, etc.

Plus I forget stuff I'm supposed to buy.

I don't really go clothes shopping at all. That's even worse because I have zero interest in clothes and hate having to try them on, hate how they feel, hate that they're "dirty" etc.

I love the iPod idea. I want one so badly.

I use my iPod quite a bit while grocery shopping. I'm listening to my podcasts which kind of makes it more interesting and sometimes less stressful.

I tend to avoid going in to restaurants. Partly because they're incredibly overpriced. But also because I prefer not having to sit near other people. I hate the feeling of the other people around me, I hate the smells (HATE the smells) of the people and the food. I mean I like the smell of food when I'm eating it if it's something I like, but then can be really grossed out when I'm done eating and have to smell and hear other people eating.

Oh, and then on top of that stuff my OCD has me sometimes having to go back through entrances and all that dumb stuff (I'm not super bad with that anymore, but it happens sometimes).

Noise doesn't bother me, but all the visual stimulation overwhelms me. I get tunnel vision, and can only focus on one thing at a time. Someone could be getting murdered right next to me, and I would only notice if blood splattered onto the oranges I was perusing.

In contrast to many people here I love shopping but it happens to me quite often that later I tend to regret having bought that thing because than I don't have money I could allocate (theoretically) for something else (and who knows if that hypothetical thing wouldn't be even cooler).

Sometimes I regret for example having bought a book because, after all, I could borrow it or find a free e-book instead (speaking of books, I saw once a small book about deciphering the "Apocalypse code" that was very cheap and I was wondering if it would be a good idea to buy it and finally I resigned what turned out to be much better idea I could suppose because coming back home that day I visited our local library and there was the same book :D ).

I don't find buying articles of clothing interesting, especially taking into consideration that one must try clothes on what occupies one of the top shelves of my pet peeves' collection. When I was 9 I had my first communion and my mother took me to buy those white, shining leather shoes which later turned out to have MUCH too small size - unfortunately it wasn't until the day of communion when my feet were bleeding and covered with blisters. My mother still likes to remind me that it's my fault because I was too lazy to check if those shoes REALLY had a right size, as if it didn't happen 14 years ago but not later than in the last week.

Yeah, I usually have horrible regret whenever I spend a lot of money on anything. Usually have trouble sleeping that night, contemplate (and sometimes do) take it back, etc. I'm a lot better about that than I was though.

Had to go to WalMart this morning. Ugh. It was a smegging madhouse. I normally don't mind WalMart but today it was awful. Way too many people. Way too many distractions and I'm sure I forgot to get whatever I actually went in there for. Damn it I just discovered that I forgot to take the throw away camera in to the photo department. Oh well, it was way too crowded anyway. I don't think I can go back. I spent $15 on fabric, then went to JoAnn's and spent another $65 there. But got $200 worth of fabric! Yay for me!

Usually shopping only annoys me if I'm shopping for clothes for me. Bad experience. I usually leave with the feeling that they should not make clothes in my size. Maybe not any size. I sometimes can even drum up the courage to do day after Thanksgiving shopping. I don't know about this year. Usually I dread it until I start doing it. Thank goodness the AS makes me have an insane need to get into stores and out again quickly.

When I was grocery shopping and a man was whistling louder than anything I'd ever heard in life, I tried covering my ears and pushing my cart with my elbows...but I was horribly unsuccessful. It felt like he was following me down every aisle so I finally ran with my cart to the other side of the store to get away from the sound that was piercing my brain. I'm sure I looked like a lunatic because I was talking to myself the whole time trying to calm down.
