The whole thread seems to be based on a poor lay understanding of genetics.

Autism has a strong genetic component, but that is different from “other people in my family have it”.

Not all cases of autism can be understood genetically.

By far the best understood environmental cause, as one of the later posters back in 2008 said, is rubella during pregnancy.

I'd give long odds that my mother and her father had it, although we are very different.

Are those Rubella cases as varied as the rest of the sample?

Father: My step daughter has said we share several traits . As someone who retired as a Foreign office equivalent of a senior brigadier , he would have to be very high functioning and excellent at masking if he was on the spectrum.

Mother: I don't think so . Ditto my brother and sister.

My birth : No mention of any difficulties .

Early childhood : Tested for the Spa .... word c1962/3 at Gt Ormond street because my 1st school in Bangkok had voiced concerns . Result was negative . Nothing else was suggested , and my parents didn't pursue the matter .

In my case it probably comes from my maternal side. My mom has some traits, she and my aunt have speculated about their father possibly being on the spectrum, and I have a second cousin on that side with an official diagnosis.
