age at diagnosis

17 years old. I'm not diagnosed, but when I was looking for information on Obsessive-Compulsive and Social Anxiety Disorders (which I AM diagnosed with), Asperger's came up and upon further research I found that AS described me perfectly. I would like to go to my psychologist and ask if she can corroborate my suspicions of having AS, but if I didn't I would feel foolish for having gone in. That's just me being my anxious self, though. I think.

My son was officially diagnosed at 15. He was very happy because he felt like he had finally found the thing that described him. I have always described him as being the same brand of weird as I am. So, after the horrid legal troubles, the psychologist and I decided that I prolly was too. So, I'm 38. I don't know if he's actually written it down anywhere, but we definitely both agree that when the DSM-V comes out, I will definitely fit the new criteria. I just don't really hit it the way it is right now. Too high functioning for AS. That's what they said about my son before he had a meltdown in the office.

The bad thing about being diagnosed so late for both of us has been that my ex has used it as a way to claim that I'm crazy because he doesn't agree that my weird kid is on the spectrum. The other bad thing is that people don't understand why high functioning autistics aren't of the flapping, screaming, non-verbal variety. Sometimes I think our lives would be easier if we were. Then people would get it. They don't get the way we are or the way our brains are wired. They don't understand thinking in pictures or outside of the box.

Sorry, didn't mean to climb on a soapbox, I was really just trying to answer the question.
