I don't try to make my showers long...I wash everything that needs to be washed, and by the time I'm done, it's been 40 minutes. I don't know how people take 5 minute showers. I would slip and fall and hurt myself trying to do it that fast.

wow, THAT's long. my hot water doesn't last much more than 20 minutes so i can't enjoy long showers like that. i've taken a 2 minute shower (washed my body, nothing else, had to get to the bus after a rowing competition) but usually they're between 5 and 10 minutes if i'm getting ready for something in the morning (work, doctor's appointment, sometimes school)

Fascinating. I've never heard this mentioned as an Aspie thing, but it certainly seems popular here as a general consensus. My parents always complained that I emptied the hot water heater every time I showered, now my wife makes the same complaint, as well as swearing that what seems comfortably warm to me is actually scalding hot to her.

Anybody tried plugging the drain, for a bath and shower at the same time? It's very relaxing for me to have my ears below the water line to shut out everything but the sound of the running water.

YES! I call this a "showerbath" I've been doing it since i was old enough to take showers!

I LOVE my hot showers and am definitely negatively affected if I don't get one everyday. I like my showers hot enough to make me red too. I used to take longer showers but with three kids I have pushed it down to 5-10 minutes.

I can understand not wanting to get wet, but when I'm in the mood, long hot showers are great. Interestingly, my NT ex-girlfriend said the water was too cold for her! I can't take it too hot at first, I have to ramp up the temperature slowly. I think a sauna would be nice too, but I never tried it.

I like hot showers with substantial water pressure. I can't stand places where you can’t get more than a lukewarm trickle from the shower head no matter how far you twist/pull the knob. What's up with that. :?

I suppose taking super long hot showers with a lot of water pressure isn't the most environmentally conservative thing to do. Can't handle showering any other way though. I have to make up by being less wasteful in other areas.

I forgot to mention that too, the pressure should be high. I hate low flow showers, it's like getting tickled, and you're cold because it doesn't heat you up enough. Luckily, my house is down the hill from the water supply, and I have higher than normal pressure. Due to this the previous owners turned the water temp up really high, you could burn yourself on it! Now if I only had that huge cast iron tub from my previous apartment...

When I was recently tested for Aspergers, one of the questions was if I like taking long showers. I do and I tend to have them very hot. My partner tends to think that the water is scalding while I think it's hardly warm. A former partner said the same thing. I am wondering if this is some sort of sensory issue with me.

the boarding school i went to for high school had a mix of high and low pressure shower heads, so i had to get one of the good ones, but it always had hot water.... as long as the heater didn't break. i took REALLY long showers there sometimes and the tank never came close to empty.

Also, I feel the need to be really clean all over.

I'm trying to start taking cold showers. It takes some time to get use to but is so refreshing. Cold showers are better for you: Improves circulation, Relieves depression, Keeps skin and hair healthy, Strengthens immunity, Increases testosterone, Increases fertility, and Increases energy and well-being. Plus its better for the environment because it does no require the energy to heat the water. Hope that helps.

I don't know how this is related to ASD, didn't even know this was something that was supposed to be common. I do take long showers though unless I am in a huge rush trying to get to school. I like them very hot as well. When I was a kid, I would stay in the bathtub for hours if permitted. When we finally got a shower, I would take minimum 30 minutes in there, but usually 45 minutes or longer. I hate the feeling of being wet unless I am in water, so it is struggle to get me in the shower (though I do it every second day), and it is a struggle to get me back out again.

Not especially @_@

It's just steam, so it's all this incredibly intense humidity. I had a Native American style one, and it was a bit too much for me...we didn't even go to the higher levels. He tells you when it gets too intense, to cup your face to the dirt for a while...I had to do that once or twice. Not to mention, I got a lot of sweat in my eyes, and that burned quite a bit.

But afterwards, you get out into the dry cool air (relative to the sauna), drink some sports drinks, and eat some sweet fruits...really nice.

Saunas don't tend to go for intense humidity. The humidity varies, but they're not the same as steam baths at all. Saunas tend to not have high enough humidity that if you're at the highest layers you feel wet.

Native American steambaths, on the other hand, have the point of steam, not of heat. They're related concepts, but not at all the same thing.

Saunas are great, especially when done properly. Hot room, then run out and jump in the lake, and then back into the sauna, and repeat :).

...Yeah, I'm a fan of sudden changes in temperature, I also grew up sitting in the hot tub, and then running out and making snow angels, and the back into the hottub...

As for showers - its unusual that I want anything less warm than a hot shower. I'll take quick showers, if I want to take time then I'll take a bath instead, and bring my kindle and read :). But heat can help my muscles relax and cold showers tend to make them tense up more. Its interesting because I can swim in cold water without having an issue, but the shower needs to be hot.

I actually prefer lukewarm showers. I dislike feeling hot water over my body. Sometimes I can gradually increase the temperature once I get in, but I always start out with the water quite cool. My body temperature is usually quite high to begin with, so when I shower I like to cool down and refresh instead of warm up and relax.

I love taking long, hot showers too. I use really hot water in my showers and my hubby has often asked me how I can stand that temperature, because he finds it too painfully burning hot to even keep his hand under it for one second, let alone take long showers in it.

This may very well be a sensory issue.
