In Canada, we have two different kinds of licences, a G1 and a G2. I got my G1 when I was 16 and I took my g2 test when I was 17. the first time 1 failed it but the second time I passed. after a while, you become so good at driving that I don't even have to think about it. I becomes second nature.

WOW, that is an interesting way to do things. It looks like the G1 is basically what is generally called a learners permit in the US, but I don't think they have a MANDATORY waiting period, though most people probably end up waiting for 6-18 months(because there is a difference between the learner permit and drivers license minimum age.). Both countries have limitations on what a person with a learners permit may do, etc...

BTW I'm glad that I drive well enough that you don't have to worry about me! Glad to oblige! 8O

And people say *I* brag! Does anyone feel like some pâté de foie gras? 8O

Just kidding, I couldn't resist.

I can't speak for all places, but I know that at least here and in a few other states, you have to have your permit for 6 months before you can take the driver's test. After about a year, if I remember correctly, if you still don't have your license, you must retake the test to get a learner's permit.

I got my learner's permit around 15 and a half, although it took some nudging from my mother. Got my license about a year ago, which also took some nagging. I still can't really park, but I don't think that's ever going to be something I can do well.

Well, the rules may have changed, and I haven't had to do that for DECADES!

BTW, so you guys know! I NEVER back to park! I try to NEVER parallel park! They failed to test me on such things on the driving test. I passed the driving test the first time. I drive well enough, and am CAREFUL enough that, with luck, I shouldn't have to worry about such things for another 20-30 years. It took me like MONTHS to get used to the freeway.

I'm 20(soon to be 21) and unfortunately due to college and so forth, I haven't had time to get my licence........until this past summer. something about my dad saying due to the fact that I'm gonna be a junior this year and Junior summer to senior year is the summer of internships, which means I should have a licence depending on where I go(hopefully the FBI internship)

yeah, as of august 19th I take the licencing test, and we'll see where it goes from there.

procrastination is another reason why it's taken this long, I don't really have the time to go down to the licecning place and apply since my work hours never really stay the same, which for me is a good thing because at 11.50 an hour and me losing about a couple grand to my college tuition for this coming year, I'd say that the hours I work are worth it.

I won't have a car on campus, but a few people I know who have cars won't mind me borrowing them, sides, it's mostly for in town things that I'd be needing a car, (groceries and the like)

sides not having a license isn't just an AS thing, a lot of NT's don't get their licenses or want licenses.

You guys are something else! One of the things I regret is the lack of freedom, the bus just can't go where I wanna go... :(

I've always wanted to ride a motorcycle tho, seems like ultimate freedom, and for some reason "easier," albeit a tad more dangerous. Probably more control thing.

I thought that, too, and even registered in a different town (via a driving school) to take the test where it wouldn't be tested as stringently.

Well, life can do things like taking you to a place where it's hugely impractical to =not= parallel park. When that happened, I practiced like it was a sport. I drove to a dark street and set up different exercises for myself. Took a lot of breaks, did a few different sessions etc.

Once I've gotten into the groove of parallel parking on one side of the street, I do find it's a challenge to switch sides. The last street I lived on was one-way and parking was on the left. Got used to that but didn't make a point of keeping up my right-side skills, so when I was elsewhere and had the choice, I sought out left-side.

The main point I'm trying to make is: while it's great to not-stress over things you don't have to worry about, don't categorically rule out ever becoming good at them.

Wow things sure do change over the years. It was 15 when I was in high school and 14 1/2 for a learner's permit.

Woah they let kids drive there ? :?
Here you have to be 18 to start taking driving lessons.
You have to be 16 to even drive a scooter that goes 30mph.
Wel that's what it's allowed to aniways, the average gone can go 60mph.

That's pretty crazy lol, here we have a seperate exam for motorbike wich is alot more difficult to get than a regular car lisence.
But it proberbly has to do with the Netherlands being the most highly populated country in Europe per square kilometre.
I don't think this is a bad thing at all.
We get immigrants from Poland and other eastern European countrys that are MANY! times more likely to cause traffic accidents.
I'm not sure if i remember it excacly, but i think it was 17 times as high.
The only thing that pisses me off is that the cops see the traffic safety issue as a way to fill up the goverments pockets.

took Driver's Ed at age 16 and passed the driving test on the first try. Didn't get my first car until last May, though. I didn't drive around much between 5 years ago and now.

300KM/h I think is not even street legal here, in the US.

In the US, I think motorcycle licenses are generally EASIER to get! ALSO, a bike limited to a certain speed, I believe it is 30MPH, can be classed as a motorized bicycle or scooter and thus drivable by someone with NO drivers license!

^Here in CA, if you have a "car" license, the motorcycle one is a cinch-take a class (believe it's four days), take the test, done.

Wonder if I could get the bike license without the car...

Took me forever to learn the kickstart/shifting of a dirt bike, but I got it now. Fun as hell shooting down straightaways in the desert, tho that's at 60 mph tops, scary as hell too...
