Should we realy be demean the Swastika any further, it was not made by the Nazis, in Budhism it was used to mean the balance of opposites. While faceing right, as is often seen, it meant stregnth and inteligents, and while faceing left meant love and mercy. So should they use it, no as they are trying to remove us, though I guess the same could be said about the Nazis. Maybe we could use a backwards to the one that is always seen, to show love and mercy, but doubt the stigma of it would go well for anyone.

The Nazi swastika is different from the Indian and other swastikas. Hitler designed it so that it was tilted and backward. He wanted it to be a symbol of chaos--which, as history unfortunately bears out, it is.

When I think about the name "Autism Speaks," I can't help but think of the sign over the gate at Auschwitz--"Work makes freedom." In both cases, the people making up the tag line are actually planning and doing the opposite of what the words say. I can't think of anything more calculated to drive autistic people nuts than to use words with their meanings skewed or backwards like this.

I'd respond to this, but I'm clearly unable to speak for myself. Apparently, my AS diagnosis is much more frightening to the general public than dying in a car accident, so I'm going to keep a low profile for awhile and feel ashamed at what a cold, unfeeling stone of a person I am and reflect upon the ways that my saintly family is carrying the heavy burden that is ME.

I'd tell you that your post was extremely well written, but I'm just confused about how one of "you people" learned how to work a computer. Shouldn't you be drooling or something?

Didn't I mention? Working a computer is the only thing I *can* do. It's a savant thing. After many years of ceaseless drooling, I woke up in the middle of the night, switched on my dad's computer, and I just knew how to do it. Everyone was amazed. And then, I started writing sentences that made sense! Right away! The scientists just don't know what to do with me.

Quite concerning... I'm certain more die in fatal car accidents than that. Oh wait, this isn't in England :P

Exactly. If you want to sign up at Autism Speaks, don't troll--try intelligent dialogues instead. You will probably actually have the chance to tell some parents with newly diagnosed kids what autism is actually like, rather than the horror stories they have heard from Speaks. I did exactly that for a few months, and it was actually rather rewarding--though also very stressful. I left when one of the mothers asked whether she was "awful" for wanting to put her autistic child up for adoption (a kid, not an infant); I replied, "Yeah, you are being kind of awful," and about half the board got on my case for not knowing how she felt, that I couldn't know how stressful it was to parent an autistic kid... Then again, there are good moments in between, when some mom's having trouble figuring out why her kid's having some problem or other, and I can throw out a few ideas, and maybe one of them sticks and they find a solution. I guess I just got too stressed to stay. But if you can manage to talk to people you disagree with, without losing your cool enough to flame people, then they could probably use you over there.

Better translation: "work brings freedom" or literally "work makes [you] free". Yeah, I know, I'm picky :P

For all those who know autism = severely isolated, ret*d little child who cannot do anything this ad indicates that 1 out of 166 children is like that. No mention of that there is a spectrum, that even pronounced forms of autism can show very differently and that it's a myth that an autistic child resembles a living corpse.

So, yes, it's ridiculously offending.

And it's causing a real problem too:

Many parents will see that and think: well, my kid is a little odd, spoke late maybe, has issues with self-help skills, but is so sweet and seems clever and lovely. Their state doesn't resemble death one bit. So they cannot possibly be autistic!
You've got to thank ads and false information spreads like this for making it even harder to get a diagnosis of a PDD.

Exactly! This is why many grow up not even knowing their child has autism or the child that grows up into adult hood is kept in the dark as to why.

You have a wonderful idea and attitude but I just went over there, and that forum is FILLED with junk science and some really strange theories and people. I wouldn't even try to reason with them. I feel sorry for any kids whose parent believe such crap. It's sad.

so if we're autistic, we don't have to worry about fatal car crashes?..;) One more reason not to go over there...

From what I discovered about them on their site, I can say they try to cure people with autism. Ridiculous enough, but they go further by trying to make it possible to recognize it when a child in the womb is autistic so the parents can abort it to prevend having an autistic child. This disgusts me, as if autists are a plague, rats, or a disgusting illness.

They also mention that they help autists coping in life by creating recources. I don't believe they ever had. It is mainly organized with the perpose of ruling autism out. It resembles eugenetics to me; creating some great race without any genetic faults and inconveniances.

From what I've read on this site about them, I know there actually works no autist, not a single one. Nevertheless it is a very big and powerful organisation with a lot of donations being made.

Even this image should give you an idea about what's wrong with this organisation. I would never support an organisation that creates such images.

It is the comparisation of autism with a fatal car accident. That is inappropriate. It's like comparing someone's birth with having cancer.

Resembles Eugenics? It is Eugenics! They're asking parents to consider aborting their Autistic kids. Makes me want to go over there and ask "So what's next, asking Jewish parents to abort their young you Nazis?" but of course, that would be trolling. :wall:

No it wouldn't. It would be Aspie honesty. I'd love to post something there like, "So, would you have preferred that my mother abort me? It would have solved two problems: fewer autistics and fewer Jews, you ignorant fascists." But, of course, that would be banging my head against the wall--or, as my husband would say, it would be like trying to teach a pig to sing. ("Never try to teach a pig to sing; it wastes your time and annoys the pig." --Robert Heinlein)

Quick! Someone get Autism Speaks on the phone and let's tell them about you so we can give them an "inspiration" angle and...

er... wait. No. They don't do that, do they? Are they the patronizing sort or do they just like depressing people?

See... I don't know which is more offensive. This sort of thing or people who applaud when they see me tying my own shoes.

Odds of Autism Speaks being offensive to the very people they proclaim to be supporting - 1:1.
