Hmmm. My only problem with receiving something specifically like a vacuum cleaner as a gift from someone who lived in the same house is that I'd feel that it was something for the house in general - as opposed to just me - and therefore should just be a general household purchase. I think I'd feel a bit cross that the other person had tried to kill two birds with one stone - i.e., combine my present with buying something for the house.
The purely practical aspect of the gift wouldn't bother me at all, though. Something you have a really good use for is a great present. If someone outside the family bought a vacuum cleaner, or someone within the family bought something else which I personally could make good use of, I'd be happy.
I remember once when I was a child, my parents one Christmas gave me for one of my presents a big box file filled with paper, pens, rulers, compasses... all kinds of stationery. People apparently told them it was a strange thing to buy their child, but they knew I loved stationery and drawing and writing. That was one of the best presents I ever had! ![]()

No I am not married and I don't think it likely that I will be. I believe that marriage is ridiculous. You get a contract for a job, a phone, a house etc but not for a supposedly loving relationship. My boyfriend feels the same way as I do and I don't think it likely that we will ever change our minds on this. I just don't see the need to wear a ridiculously expensive white dress just to sign your life over, in a legally binding contract, to a man. Why do it to yourselves ladies?
Anyhow, in answer to the original question, I don't think I'd mind if I got a vacuum cleaner, particularly if I really needed one. My boyfriend and I are in an equal relationship, so I know he'd use it too. Besides, we both like to buy each other things that we know is going to be useful to both of us, we like to share.

You get a tax break when you're married and you can put your spouse on your medical insurance. I don't think you can do that with your partner if you're not married.
You don't have to wear a white dress when you're getting married. In fact, you can get married by a judge, instead of by minister or priest.
