Maybe I should look it up...

Why has no one voted for Okinawan?
Too bad I already voted in the poll, I really like Okinawan style martial arts.

I'd forgotten to vote. I just voted Okinawan, since that's the kind I've practiced (shuri-ryu karate). I find shuri-ryu quite beautiful.

Cool, thank's. :)

That is pretty cool, I had never heard of that one either. I only look into the martial arts I hear about or see and decide if I like it or not from there, the ones on the list are the ones I like.

Well if you learn about JKD you will learn about Wing Chun because it largely based on it. Many of the moves are pretty similar.

Really though, it all about lineage and your sifu. It varies quite a bit within styles. We are aiming to be closer to Samuel Kwock in the Yip Man lineage. My sifus train with him fairly regally.

It was supposed to be like that when started, but a lot of what we learned before turns out was corrupted and not as good, so we pretty much had to start again. I don't mind though, it will be worth it.

When you do it for a while you learn to just go with it and learn as best you can, stay out of the politics. I don’t even think about getting sashes (not that there is many of them), just improving my overall abilities, and knowledge.

I would like to earn sashes but I would want to feel I truly earned it so I would work twice as hard as everyone else who earned the same sash. I want to be like Rock Lee so much and would push myself harder all the time. :D

That is exactly it. The sashes are a symbolic, not the actual ability. Of course the fabric is actually functional and was used long before the colour system. Colours are more a Japanese thing, which can be helpful as a reminder. Not only a reminder to your sifu, but also a reminder to you to pass on knowledge to those less knowledgeable students (again not strictly speaking a different sash than you).

There is natural ability. A sash is more representative of the acquired knowledge and skills rather than who can beat who.

You don't get sashes unless you are absolutely ready according to the sifu. It is not a case of passing a test once or twice. There is whole magnitude of abilities that you will be acquiring in the mean time. Just to get a sash takes several years. That’s what I mean when I say it isn't completely orientated around getting sashes. You can fluctuate interims of ability easily. I have good spells and then totally bottom, so you need to be able to maintain a partial level so I feel I truly deserve that prize.

There is no agreed upon colour system in wing chun or agreed apron number of sashes (although there is some consensus within some lineages). There are other titles and millstones that can roughly coincide with sashes but not exactly.

That all sounds very complicated, too bad all the martial arts dojos here teach martial arts I have no interest in. :(

Not really, i probably could have explained it better. Whereas some systems regularly test for specific levels in wing chun you only progress when you are truly ready.

You can never take a belt or sash at face value. If somebody says they are a black belt in something, you presume they know a thing or two, but you can't know for sure their actual ability based on that.

Not all martial arts use the term dojo. Maybe just the Japanese ones.
