I just realised that I'm ambidextrous last week. I mean I've allways done some things more naturally with my left hand allthough I thought I was right handed, but now I realised that I can write and and do all kinds of other stuff too left handedly :D Of course my handwriting with left is a bit slow and not very neat, but I figure it's because I havent trained it as extensively as my right hand.

I would have always said right handed but many times it has been as if my left wanted to jump in and take over. Recently I had a neuropsychological evaualation on the measure of hand prefence it show my left hand testing much high than right. I have been looking for answer to why. I have not come accross a scientific answer but I speculate I may really be ambidextrous but mimic the majority of righties early on. I have no memories of being forced to use my right hand like I often read others.

I remember reading about a group, possibly African Bushmen or Australian Aborigines, where about a third of the population is left-handed. But I'll be darned if I can find exactly where I read this.

Still, if such an identifiable group exists, it might be interesting to see if they're more likely/less likely/or no different from any other population when it comes to showing AS traits. Given that that rate is two or three times higher than is found in most populations, I'd think it would be a good way to establish (or not establish) some sort of correlation. Granted even if a strong correlation was shown, this wouldn't definitively prove the point, but it might show that a harder look into the relationship was warranted.

My handed-ness is a secret to me mostly.

That's one people react freaked out to.

I assume that is because handedness is something most people think you know naturally.

Raised to use my right-hands because of no preference but can do each task that does not need to be learnt as well with my left hand and take as long with my left hand to learn these tasks as with my right hand.

I also write wonderfully with my left hand and a left-hand pen.

I now prefer that, because my writing is nicer and better looking to me, though unreadable to others (whereas my writing with my right hand is liked by others and easy to read for them, but unreadable to me).

I'm sure you know it, but AMBIDEXTROUS literally means roughly equal DEXTERITY(ability) with BOTH. AMBI meaning both, and dextrous referring to dexterity. And you described being ambidextrous. In fact, you pretty much said you have the same experience that I do. I was taught to use my right hand, and do, but can pretty much use my left as well. In many cases, I may use either hand. On gattica, there is a scene where a doctor tells the protagonist that he could tell the person was otherhanded because of how he did something. With me, may do it with one hand, the other, or both. Go figure...

For the record, my mother was ambidextrous and favored her left. I believe my father is right handed. I don't know if he considers himself ambidextrous.

Interesting, I'm in the majority according to the poll, who is right handed.

I don't think there's any link between autism/AS and being left-handed. Most of my AS friends are righties except for one who's a lefty. I also noticed Temple Grandin isn't a lefty.

There are a lot of creative people who are left-handed, though-Lady Gaga is!

I'm mostly right handed, although I'm also partly ambidextrous. I think that this is because I'm naturally ambidextrous, but I have adapted to the mostly right handed world.
