I don't know why they do, but I know that life ain't fair. No one promised us anything, nor gave us a choice in the beginning.

It's simple luck, and you can't trust her, 'cause she isn't fair.

She's something better than that.

It's often a struggle for us not to be pessimistic due the way we have been treated all of our lives. I find it interesting how different people can grow up in similar circumstances yet come out with different worldviews. Is nature ultimately more of a factor than nurture in terms of predicting future behavior?[/quote]

You have a valid point as, I'm not going to lie and say, that I have not felt pessimistic at times yet, I try not to as, there was a time not too long ago where, I had been pessimistic towards a certain aspect in life within a Aspergers group on yahoo which ultimately caused me to be looked upon as being the bad apple of the group.Anyways, I'm always trying to maintain a sense of hope though..

If you throw that back into their face they truly hate that when something goes wrong for them. :D

I hate the phrase "life isn't fair" or "that's life", because that's like saying that it's always gonna suck this bad and attempting to make it better is selfish and arrogant. It's like, WTF?!

I wouldn't even call it that. It's more like discomfort with being reminded that they've simply given in and accepted the status quo, instead of doing something about what they perceive as injustice. Part of them is ashamed that they haven't even spoken up, let alone taken action against the wrongness in the world; so they get upset with anyone who appears to be more motivated and driven than they've allowed themselves to be.

They simply don't like to be reminded of how they've failed in life.

injustice or cruelty? Why do they often say that when THEY are responsible for the unfair conditions being complained about? Why is it so difficult for them to take responsibility for their actions?

What does the concept of fairness have to do with responsibility.

If life was fair we might all be in trouble. Everyone assumes they would be on the good side of that redistribution if it were fair.

The funny thing about the phrase is that its used as a kind of slogan for personal responsibility or maybe stoicism but its so vague it doesnt support any philosophy of action. It's suggesting you can get more from the system than you put in or deserve. The proper response to "life isnt fair" might be, "Oh, I'm counting on it. Free stuff, here I come."

well, it isn't fair simply because we're humans, and as I've already mentioned that I've learned: nature is run by logic; humans, mostly by emotion. They clash constantly; due to the nature of humans, life isn't fair. Welcome to humanity.

Me? I'm sort of a cross between--pick your choice here:

Superman and Lex Luthor

Professor Xavier and Magneto

Why, you ask? Very simple....I have the contempt for humanity that Luthor and Magneto have, and many have also told me I share their high intellect, as well. But at the same time, I share the moral beliefs of Superman and Professor Xavier, regarding doing the right thing....even if those other silly humans don't really deserve it.

I have to say I think about this subject a lot. I agree with everyone here that says "life isn't fair" or "that's just the way it is" is a self-serving belief those who are strong come up with so they don't have to feel guilty about treated the weak unfairly.

Someone recently posted "dog eat dog world," a similar thread

I just hate that. I say "that's not fair!" and someone tells me "life's not fair," I'm thinking "Well, you sure aren't helping!"
