I'm not sure how to define "hip" - it seems that many define it at sharing in the most recent aspects of popular culture - so "hipness" is in direct correlation to popularity.

But it seems to me that historically the "hippest" people are the ones who were among the first to identify themselves with emerging cultural aspects. So by that definition "hipness" would be in inverse proportion to popularity.

"Hip is a slang term meaning fashionably current and in the now. Hip is the opposite of square or prude."

You raise an interesting point - I suppose a person could be into stuff that's so advanced and progressive that the "hip" community hasn't noticed it yet, and so would label that person "unhip" even though history were about to prove them wrong.

It's also worth noting that the antonyms of "hip" cited therein - i.e. a "square" or a "prude" - have positive connotations as well as negative ones. All of which supports my belief that to hold hipness aloft as a great virtue is naive and immature. Perhaps that's why only young people seem to fall for it in any significant numbers, and why, even among the young, there are many who want no part of it.

I'd seriously doubt anyone who's claim they're "hip" to mean they're following the trend. Because "hip" is something they said in the 90s maybe.

Just shows how "hip" I am. I now know that the word is hardly used these days.  But I'm sure everyone gets the point behind my question.

While I refuse to grow old... my hips aren't listening. I'm not a hipster by any stretch of the imagination.

Amusingly, I don't think the word 'hip' is hip anymore

As for me.. nah I think I am totally fashion challenged and I am into really geeky stuff.. which isn't hip. I often get complimented by my upstairs neighbors on my clothes though which really suprises/confuses me because it seem like they think I have good fashion?

Hmmm......gazillions of hits...... :? .........is it the one that begins with 2 guys driving a blue convertible followed by shots of a nerd mowing a lawn? If so it's this one:

I can't get the sound here at work, but I'll take a proper listen at home, if it's the right one.

Three possibilities:

1. They're truly liberated people who pay genuine compliments about the things they like instead of the things they think they should like (i.e. fashionable crap).
2. They find your dress sense a hilarious antidote to their otherwise dull lives, and are hoping to encourage you to provide more of the same.
3. They're after something and are therefore seeking to ingratiate themselves.

I don't entirely feel comfortable using the word "hip" or even "cool," but I tend to be, I guess well liked with how I am. I dress how I want(Wal-Mart is my friend lol), act how I want. I use some, I guess you would call it slang. I say "dude" and "man" a lot. I listen to whatever music I like, which is almost everything. I think I'm pretty "cool," but to be honest I could care less if others feel I'm cool enough, or as you put it, "hip" enough. I don't follow trends and fads, I just go with my own flow and some people seem to respect me and like me for that.
