Fair enough, I am just translating what I saw on the discovery channel. The personalities on the show were supposedly the top experts, and the show was from last year. Not to say that you are incorrect, and I am actually curious from where you have gotten your information.

I do not recall where I first encountered the information, although I have encountered it in a university lecture and the same information is described by Frans de Wall in "The Ape and the Sushi Master".

In any case, if they do teach, the level of theory of mind and teaching is very low, it seems.

On the contrary, determining that someone does not know something cannot occur without theory of mind, and knowing that they cannot know without seeing (hence the tracking of eye movement by the teaching chimps) is an advanced theory of mind skill.

On the show they demonstrated that dogs did better on theory of mind tests than the chimps. Although they made the point that chimps are much more intelligent/ inventive.

Perhaps dogs are simply exceptional, rather than chimps being poor. By the way, theory of what kind of mind? Chimps have been shown to be much better with theory of chimp mind than with theory of non-chimp mind. Unlike domestic dogs, chimps have not been selected for many generations for their ability to extrapolate theory of own-species mind to theory of human mind.

Chimps may be our closest cousins, but dogs are our best friends.... hmmmm. Though I bet most AS people are cat people -not too many mirror neurons there.

Dogs have been selectively bred to please and be pleasing to humans.
