You can't be evicted for stupid reasons. About the only reason a landlord would evict a tenant for is failure to pay rent. That, or the property is being demolished or sold and converted to a non-rental or otherwise unavailable for rent.

They need to give you 60 (or 90?) day notice so plenty of time to rent somewhere else and plan a move.

even if they didn't know other people were renting here?
it's not an apartment complex either or some establishment that has set policies for this kind of thing.
it's just one old retired dude that rents his old house out.
Apparently he only found out that me and my mom and sister were living here when the pipes from the kitchen sink got backed up recently, so we had to call him to get a plumber to fix that.
We'd assumed that our roomie had informed the landlord of us when we moved in and started paying rent. But nope, guess not...

& what really pisses me off, is why does he particularly want me out sooner  ?
As if i'm some kind of partying menace. I'm a responsible renter just like the rest, i on't even invite people over at all or do anything to warrant being kicked out sooner than anyone else, and i'd just only payed my rent a few days ago. that rent was all my money for this month apart from food stamps because disability only pays me $339/month and my rent was $333. This is f*cking dumb....

or is that an actual law that applies to all renters, whether the landlord knew about them or not :? ?

Your name isn't on the lease so unfortunately you did not sign a legal contract that protects you with this law. Legally, you aren't renting from him if you don't sign a contract saying you are. Next time, make sure your name is on the lease too so this can't happen again.

It's very unfortunate that this happened while you are trying to make travel plans. I know moving and travel plans are very difficult to juggle. I hope you and your family can find another place soon. Perhaps the very slow housing market will work in your favor. Many people who have been unable to sell their condos in this slow market have been renting them out as apartments.

It's a WA state law, yes. Your name was not on the lease so unfortunately it does not apply here.

Even though you were not leasing, a residence is legally defined as a place you live at and where your belongings are kept. So you may have SOME legal leg to stand on to defer the eviction until the end of the month. I'm not a lawyer so take this for what its worth.

By the way, what the other tenant did is called subleasing. It is generally not allowed.

like not knowing that my roommate, the original tenant, hadn't told the landlord.
Me & my mom have been renting here for months and all of a sudden this comes up and we suddenly have to leave because someone else was lazy. Either that or she knew the landlord didn't approve of that sort of thing ahead of time and just neglected to inform us when she subleased to us. If that was the case, she could have at the very least told us so that we wouldn't stupidly tip off that landlord that we were living here.

The original tenant gets to stay, but she can't even afford the $1000/month rent on her own without us chipping in anyways  .

And what really kind of annoys me is that he gave me the shortest deadline to move, out of the 2 of us. I pay rent too, i've been a responsible renter, doing my part with the small-time maintenance, and paying my fair share, i've never invited anyone over ever, i'm not a party person. And yet, i suspect that i'm being told to leave the soonest, and thus discriminated against, based solely on my age. That pisses me off.

Have to check also what the notarized lease agreement says about other occupants and whether they're allowed. If the landlord forgot to mention in writing that the tenant can't have other occupants, then maybe i'll at least have til the end of the month.
i was reading up on the lease/sublease laws for this state. That's the best i could find, so i'll just have to see what i can do with it.
