I don't understand what you mean by this.

If seanmw has every intention of visiting a girlfriend that he fully believes has cancer, and as soon as he possibly can, then my apologies to him for my doubts and queries, but he seems to understand how accepting donations entails a certain amount of accountability, because earlier in the thread he explained that the reason why he was bumping it with posts saying "goodnight" was so that people wouldn't think that he was a fraud ... that was when he had still only collected a small amount of money.

If seanmw is wondering whether he really needs to go at once, ( as opposed to Thanksgiving weekend for instance ), I suppose I hope that reading these posts he will think about how *some* people at least contributed because it was obvious that he could not raise the money immediately himself; ie. the urgency of it all was the whole point.

And if seanmw has been scamming, in any shape or form, then I don't understand how posts like this could be said to be "bullying"!

His being too pissed off to post is actually one of the most *positive* possible explanations for his not updating on here, so I'm not sure why you want to dismiss it.

And if he weren't, if he were fine, it would be a dramatic change in his WP habits, because in the 5 day period from 23-28 August he posted 77 times, and his post-rate average since joining a year ago has been 8.5 posts a day.

However I believe you may be right; he *has* a life; ... college, maybe even a girlfriend, ( in the best of health too ), and over $670 to spend ...

No news from him at this juncture, after his saying that he could hardly wait to see her, and that he would finally be able to, after moving to his dad's on the 30 August, and going to the doctor's on the 1 September, ... is too blatant a withdrawal from the scene. If he was on the plane he would have posted, and his myspace page log-ins prove that he has had access to the internet since the 1 Sept.

Well, if people were accusing me of being a scam artist, I'd be pissed and avoid posting here too. *shrug*

Maybe he's waiting for this all to cool off. I don't think he's scamming anyone but then again, I'm a very trusting person. >.<

My personal theory: I don't think he set out intending to scam people for money. I think he got sucked into an imaginary drama with some girl on the internet who was just passing time by making up this story and he believed it. Now he's realized it's all fiction but he's too embarrassed to come back here and say, "you were right, it was all something she made up". He would get 3 pages of (well-deserved) "I told you so" posts and he just can't face that.

That's my theory.

I think that is very probable.

That's what I thought would happen right from the start, but I did think that he might have to go over there to see her in order to find out, which is why I donated something, but if he has worked it out without actually taking the plane etc then I would have thought that the people who contributed money towards the journey, especially b9 who sent $300, would have been receiving quiet refunds by PayPal, etc, and that doesn't seem to be happening. ...

I don't think it would necessarily be helpful to post a lot of "I told you so's" if it does turn out he's been taken for a ride. He will feel bad enough all ready and won't be needing anybody to kick him when he's down. I've been there and I tell you it will accomplish nothing. I think if anybody wants to congratulate themselves for being right they can do it privately. Grrr.

I do agree he needs to check in and let people know the status of things.

Besides, if his girlfriend is recovering, that's great. At least my part of the donations was to let two people who obviously care about each other actually meet in person. If that still happens, I'd feel like my contribution was worthwhile. The possibility that she was dying was a motivating factor at the time, but not a requirement. I did kick in a bit more a bit over a week ago just to help things along.

I think it's sad that people can't help each other out anymore without a bunch of skeptics crying 'scam.' Sean's posting history and the PMs that we exchanged suggest anything but. People do take breaks from forums, and life gets in the way sometimes. Whatever is happening on his end, I think we need to just be patient.

The question is, where is Sean?

There is no cancer. She made it up.

The "mom" character was probably the girl's female friend. I doubt that a real parent would be involved in this. Or at least I hope not.

He's probably spent a large part of the donated money. He is poor, and he is one very very messed up kid, so of course he spent 30-40% of what he received.

He's an aspie kid! There's no way he'd fly across the country on his own, to meet strange people, even if this were all 100% true. Do I even need to explain this?

As to why he's not posting here. He might have FINALLY realized this was all a pipedream. Good for him. Or perhaps she finally dropped the hammer and asked him for money for cancer treatment or whatever. He might have fallen for it and wired the donated money to her. If it is a HER.

So much time has passed since he "met" her, and the only pics she shared with him were some lame myspace pics of two different girls? Everyone has a cellphone camera FFS! If this were a real long distance thing between two kids, they would have exchanged a hundred pictures by now.

Come now. No need for that. He's messed up and he needs help. He isn't a bad person. Just naive and inexperienced. I don't think he's the scammer here.

Sure he could. Some of us can handle it just fine. And yeah, we know they've never met. That was kind of the whole point of the trip.

it's funny how no one sees hale_bopp even the least bit responsible for this. i know a lot of people like her, and seanmw as well, but come on now. she really had no business at all setting something up like this with zero facts (he also obviously also had no business accepting money from random people online, when he also had zero proof from his "gf"). the only reason why i am concerned and posting so much in here is because this place (wp) is going to become a breeding ground for crap like this to happen. people are soon going to see that this place is an easy target and they will migrate over here with their deception.
