If it turns out to have been a scam on his part then it would seem that the most effective way to get someone to believe in you is to pretend to a weakness which the other person has but does not admit to, is unaware of or blind to, as the conman does with the woman psychologist in Mamet's amazing film "House of Games". ...

I hate thinking that I have poor judgement, but I realised a while ago that I have repeatedly shown bad judgement in my life, and have begun to understand that on the whole I'm safest making no big decisions, ( or very few ), living a very careful, cautious life; I am so bad at weighing up the overall importance of individual factors.

Well I warned you guys.

Every message board I have ever been on there always someone coming up with a sob story to raise money for someone who does not post on the board. Two of the sites the posters proved the guys to be frauds pulling the same scam on similar message boards but on the other boards they got their stories mixed up and thats how they got caught. The trick is they befriend someone tell them their sob story then manipulate someone else to do the post on a one or more boards. They sit back and have several kind hearted people raise the money for them and hand it over no questions ask. The people who were scammed feel good about themselves not knowing they were scammed think they are good people and the scammer got a nice payday without hurting anyone leaving their victims feeling like a good person.

Sean please beware if she waits for you to raise the money for a ticket to visit her then changes her mind to instead visit you then asks for you to send her the ticket money so she can buy a ticket. Also watch out if she has you buy a ticket for her all she has to do is go to the airport and cancel the ticket to get the refund. IE she shows up gets the ticket in her hand waits a hour then returns it for a refund then hands it to her real boyfriend if she truely is a women in the first place..

Having your back story all twisted is a sure sign the scammer does not run a tight game. They are either stupid or this is their first scam. I am not saying Sean is the scammer perhaps the scammer got their story mixed up since they are running multiple scams and Sean is just repeating what he is being told.

Do you know you are asking for money from people who likely do not make much money? I know I certainly do not. Many (Not all) of these people are on some form of government assisstance and are scrapping by. The $20.00 some person might send you could have gone for some medicine or doctor co-pay. Perhaps they could have used that money to buy something extra to make their life a little better or easier. You are sounding pretty selfish to ask these people for money to visit someone who you really do not know exists. I hope you can live with yourself after taking these people's money if it turns out to be a scam or a hoax. I know I would not be proud of myself if I did it.

Remember no one looks pretty after they go through chemo thearpy. If you get there and she has a rosey healthy glow, all of her hair, and not puking she is lying. Good luck.

My friend did prison time and one of the many cons he learned was how to take advantage myspace, facebook, message boards, and how to manipulate kind people to think they are helping you to get them to do all the leg work for you. Tricks to use are saying you have a terminal illness, broke up with an abusive partner, and about to become homeless. Other tricks are to get other people's pictures off myspace and photobucket so you could become anything you want to be. He said you should find sites set up by real families of the sick make a small donation and see if they will let you put the link to your site on it to get some spin off donationations from the people helping that family. Its freaking sick and a lot of people are doing it.

The guy who warned me about message boards spent his prison time writing to lonely female penpals who sent him money and stamps. He wrote to over thirty women he was making almost $12,000.00 a year off these women many of whom were single moms. When he was released from prison he had a women drive up from Ohio to take him home so his mom could save on gas money. He still writes to the women he wrote to in prison three of them are looking for work in the Buffalo area so they can be close to him. He is going to try to see if he can juggle all three or at least stay with the one who makes the most money. Scammers are out there and they brag to their friends on how much they are getting over on their suckers. Please do not become one.

The he wants to send him money for nothing do not make much money some are on government assisstance the money they sent would have been better used to get medicine, food, pay rent, and utilities you would not understand this you are only 15 you still have your bills paid by your parents. yeah a lot of us warned them. but no, they all were like "id rather it be a scam then not have helped at all if his girlfriend is telling the truth" this is the internet, and sorry but i personally am not going to be in idiot and donate to some random guy with zero facts or legitimacy. i'd rather donate to a REAL charitable organization.

i understand that everyone wanted to feel good about themselves and do something "good," but they really just did this website a disservice. :? oh well. now people have proof that many aspies love to bleed naivety, and i doubt this will be the last time that something like this happens on here.

it's funny how no one sees hale_bopp even the least bit responsible for this. i know a lot of people like her, and seanmw as well, but come on now. she really had no business at all setting something up like this with zero facts (he also obviously also had no business accepting money from random people online, when he also had zero proof from his "gf"). the only reason why i am concerned and posting so much in here is because this place (wp) is going to become a breeding ground for crap like this to happen. :? people are soon going to see that this place is an easy target and they will migrate over here with their deception.

Some scammers use nice people like Hale Bopp to get a scam going to make themselves look innocent like they were too embarrassed or too proud to ask for the money. They go cry on the shoulder of someone they know is nice very helpful who considers them as a friend. You are taught at an early to help friends out from an early age. They set up the post asking others to help this person they usually get real gung-ho about it and their energy and willingness to help becomes infectious. The "good friend" finds other people to help doing all the leg work and the begging while the scammer types off situation reports and keeps the fires burning to keep the money making machine the friend gave birth to too keep snatching more funds. Its a great scam if you can pull it off. Your hands are clean and the victims feel better about themselves. You also get schmucks who say stuff like I don't care if was a scam at least so and so was able to use the money to be happy or some lame phrase to save face.

THERE IS NOT SUFFICIENT EVIDENCE OF THIS BEING A SCAM. Anyone care to back me up?

s**t happens. People do things. Some of them even have lives away from the computer!

All I see here is a bunch of people who want it to be a scam so they can get boners over how "they told us so."

If I could get a boner by saying I told you so I would never leave the house and be very very sleepy.

I would not be suprised if he used the money to visit Ferdinand. Remember he did say Ferdinand lives close to his "sick computer girlfriend". If he would of asked for money to go visit him for a few days I would of gave a little for that. Why not, at least someone would be having fun on my dime.

This is a fascinating experience.

I never believed the girlfriend's story, but I believed that sean did, and felt sorry for him being taken in by a scammer! :lol :lol :lol

If seanmw is the scammer, ( as seems increasingly likely, almost certain ), then it's like scams have "folded"/doubled in complexity, exactly like in Mamet's film "House of Games", such that people give money to people that they think are being/have been scammed.

There's no way I would have given money to someone saying that they had cancer and were dying and wanted one chance at least to see their g/b-friend before they died! But make the "Main Character" someone who seems to be "being scammed" and I happily send $25, because I want them to be able to find out the truth ( confront/expose the "baddie" who's scamming them )! :lol

PS. Story structure, the ancient underlying rules of story, encourage us to believe seanmw because as "Main Character" he is likeable, someone we can identify with because of their failings/weaknesses.

But what is his weakness? Being scammed! Why were so many of us so sure right from the start that it was Adrienne the "baddie" and seanmw the sympathetic Main Character to root for?

I think that the reason why Adrienne seems fishy from the start is because she was presented as a distinctly passive "goal/quest object" who acted more like an obstacle/hindrance a lot of the time rather than as a "friendly" character. Antagonist/contagonist, either way she helped to make seanmw look like the hero being lured/deceived by an illusion.

Actually it occurs to me that in fact the power of this story, and perhaps of all scams, is that you get to play a role in it yourself, you become "Sidekick/faithful companion" or "Guardian/protecter" etc, helping him achieve his story-goal if you send money, and if you don't because feel dubious about it/don't believe him then you fit perfectly into the classic role of "Sceptic/doubter".

I can't wait to see "Inception", next weekend. A story folded and folded and folded; apparently the number of folds that people can follow is 4-5, as in "Anne thinks that Charlie thinks that Heather thinks that Richard thinks ... such and such"; the fifth one is the limit. Nolan taking story and our involvement in deciphering the story to the extreme.

I hope that noone, out of all the other people who decided to play the role of "sidekick" or "guardian", has sent more money than they can afford to say goodbye to without bitterness.

PS. Maybe the antidote to this sort of thing is to refuse the role of supporting player, insist on being the Main Character! Like in a good story know what your goal is, etc! :lol

Actually don't even need to look at his myspace page to see that he has had internet since he stopped posting on the 28/29 August; his profile says that he last logged in to WP on "Thu Sep 02, 2010 7:16 am".

So, if by any miniscule chance he is not scamming, he must be either very pissed off with the whole of WP, fed up of the accusations, ( ... except that people had stopped making them until his failure to update ), or miserable and embarrassed ( as some people have suggested ) because he has understood that Adrienne has been faking.

But if the latter were true, I think that he, as a non-scamming" "nice" person, would send most of the money back to people, and he doesn't seem to have ... so I'm pretty sure that he really has been scamming us.

I've not been scammed for money before, just for emotional attachment/support, so it's been an interestingly novel experience ... but I am wondering whether it might be a good idea for this thread to be made a sticky to act as "object lesson", useful/helpful reminder of this kind of danger/pitfall, and thread for people to post other such experiences on, so that it is not forgotten. :?:

This article on "Top scams of the decade" (with "bogus girlfriend plane trip" entry) is a good summary of the most profitable scams - http://arstechnica.com/web/news/2010/09 ... decade.ars

Maybe the small amount of money scammed here is just practice for bigger fraud later on? Or perhaps there's a few websites on the go at once? (also, we only have his word that he hadn't reached $500; as B9 showed, he actually had more than that already, so who knows how much the total profit really is?)

To be honest though, it just sounds more like simple greed and and a sense of entitlement.

seanmw has been a long term member and never asked for money before. he did not even ask this time.
hale_bopp did what she thought was a good thing since she believed him and i also believed him.

i have a lot of money and if his girlfriend died and he never got to see her because i was so greedy that i could not part with a couple of hours income, then i may feel a slight pang of guilt. i have always maintained i am incapable of feeling guilt, but that is because i have never believed i have done anything wrong. people tell me all the time that i have done the wrong thing and i should feel guilty and i just ignore them because i do not perceive how what i did was wrong.

in this circumstance, i saw what i thought i should do, and that was to give him some money that i would not ever need so that he could do something that i thought he very much needed.

i have given money to disheveled emaciated beggars on the street many times to go and get some food. they may have scurried away to buy drugs with it (although i doubt they could get drugs with $10) , but for me, who has had the excess luck i have had, to say "no" to someone who has had no luck is not something i would feel right about.

i do not easily give money away, and i have never given anything that i can not afford.
you may well scorn me for being naively compassionate in error, and you may think people like me are likely to draw shady people to this site, but people like you simmer in your soup of self preservation and mediocrity of intent.

you will never be scammed by the shady people i attract to this site because you are a skeptic in a steel suit who will live and die within your default rejection of any possibility of the honesty of other people.

this situation with seanmw did not make a dent in my financial situation so i do not consider it a thing to dwell bitterly on.

i have no face to save. i could not give a damn whether i am seen as a street smart "dude" by you or anyone else. one thing i am certain i can never feel under any circumstances is "embarrassment"

i will not dwell on the error of my belief, and i am not going to whinge about it because it is all in the past. it is receding at one second per second into history and it is already a long way behind. i look ahead to tomorrow and forget about yesterday.

Stellar wrote:

you have an impoverished being. i do not "love" to be naive. that imputes i am deliberately being naive in order to fit into an image. i am not really naive anyway. you can spit your foul mental sputum upon on my character, but i have a shell that has grown thick that your slime rolls off.

i know this is going to be a contentious statement that i may be warned about but i will say it anyway.

i think you are dissatisfied that genuine AS people like me give pretenders like you a bad reputation.
you may have conceptualized yourself with respect to only the admirable characteristics of AS, like extreme intelligence (myth), wisdom with respect to what is really happening(myth) etc and you are unhappy about real ones like me giving you a bad name.

you may have adopted an idea of AS as a uniqueness of being that is superior to the average person, and then some floppy eared dumb dog like me comes along and embarrasses you who does not like to associate yourself with the lesser "virtues" of AS.

you did not give any money so you have no right to complain.
i did give money and i will not complain because i am over it and whatever the case turns out to be, i am long past it.

He probably raised enough money for a new game system, a few games, a new cell phone, and perhaps an IPAD. He is probably too busy playing with those to post on WP.

When other people see your posts boasting how much you have given they feel like well if B9 is giving that amount then it has to legit. Your actions influence other people and get the ball rolling. You might be able to afford to give out money freely but other people might be neglecting medical bills, utilities, and food to send a portion of their government check. If you got to send money do not post you sent x amount of dollars and you feel better for doing it. You are influencing others to send cash so they too could feel better. :x

He might not be able to be scammed by sean but maybe the next guy you go out of the way to"help" might have a tighter more convincing scamm going on that will strike at the hearts of the skeptics here causing them to send their hard earned dollar. You keep paying they keep coming with new scams sooner or later they will find one that sticks. Your attitude is very dangerous.

I did not lose any family in a concentration camp but I will fight against fascism if it reappeared in America. Maybe my complaints will keep some other person from being scammed. You can afford to be scammed, how many people here sent money who cannot afford to be scammed that $20.00 they sent could have been used for a doctor's office visit, a medical copay, or put into a bank account to be saved for a rainy day.
