I'm just wondering, do NT's look people really in the eye, I mean literally looking into people's eyes when they talk?

I know that when you look at someone's face in general it looks to them like you're doing eye contact and I thought that was what most people did, not actual eye contact, but nose, forehead etc, and just sort of "checking in" with short eye contact now and then, but mostly not?

I mostly look at something else when people talk to me, but nod my head slightly, to show that I am indeed listening. Instead of "checking in" with eye contact I just glance at their face instead, I don't really know if this is considered rude or not, but I've not had any complaints from anyone.

I also have a bad habit of migrating *behind* people I'm talking with if we're standing and talking.

I've noticed I have a tendency to avoid eye contact, and yes, the mouth is my favorite spotto look at imstead. But I've made efforts to change that, and now more often than not I look directly in the eye.

Oh and I usually either look at their nose right between their eyes, or take turns between the riht and the left one.

I always try to look at them somewhere on their face, other than the eyes.

Same here, mouth, chin, nose, forehead. Anywhere but the eyes.

Yep, i do this too. I either look at peoples mouths od noses.
I've seen goggles that have cameras that track eye movement and it shows the point they're looking at.
I think it'd be interesting to see the different results of NT's and people on the spectrum.

I look at faces and mouths. Mom gave me this tip when I told her I have a hard time giving them eye contact. It took me a while to remember to do this and now it comes natural now. I do consider it eye contact. Sometimes I still have a hard time with this.

Yep. Most people can't tell what part of the face you are looking at as long as you are looking. I look at the mouth. Can't do eyes. It makes me feel so weird. I try with my kids though because I feel like I should make that effort with them, plus I'm way more comfortable with them. One of them at least, not big on eye contact herself though... :/

I've made a habit out of looking at people's mouths. If someone notices my lack of eye contact, and I'm not up for telling the entire story, I tell them I lip read. I spent a good amount of time rifle training as a kid, and hunting in my late teens, so having somewhat lowered hearing is not an implausible story. It's probably a true story, too, I just never had it tested. I do read on the lips, though, when I look at someone's mouth, and I don't always catch what people say if I can't see their mouth. I sometimes have a very hard time figuring out the lyrics in songs etc.

If I don't watch their mouths, I just stare into the room/nothing, or sometime flicker from the mouth to the brow, nose and so on. In all conversations I make sure to meet people's eyes from time to time, but only fleetingly and momentarily. That creates an illusion of eye contact that satisfies most people, at least for short conversations. The longer the conversation, the more likely the other is to realize something is off, and the more likely my rifle story is to be told...

Whenever I talk to someone, yes, I look at their mouths or I don't look at them at all. I always wondered if they could tell I was looking at their mouths instead of their eyes, or if it was such a small difference in the placement of my eyes that they couldn't tell.

When I'm watching TV I often catch myself focusing on the mouth but in person I usually glance all around the room avoiding the face completely except quick glances of eye contact.

Ulgh! Mouths creep me out, especially when someone has "lizard teeth" or "cannibal teeth;" you know, the type of dentition you see with people like Armin Meiwes or Jeffrey Dahmer. Lizard teeth are teeth that look like someone filed them to points, but in actuality are the result of poor dental care or some other condition. I have to look at something off in the distance that is at eye-level. It looks like I'm making eye-contact and the other person buys it.

I look at mouths instead of eyes if I have to look like I'm making eye contact (when at work, usually), or if I want to look like I'm making eye contact for some reason.

The rest of the time, I tend turn my head at angle so I'm not looking at their face at all. I am more likely to be able to continue a conversation with someone if am sitting next to the person I'm talking to and looking straight ahead.

Yep I look at people mouths instead of their eyes, I'll also look at other parts of their faces like their nose.

Sometimes I can look into someone's eyes briefly. When I can't, I'll look either at the bridge of the nose or at their eyebrows to give the appearance that I'm looking into their eyes.

I noticed that I look at mouths and not eyes only a few years ago. Even when I watch TV... I look at mouths, and have to force myself to look at eyes.

Yeah, or their nose or some feature. I can look at eyes for a second or two. If we are having a conversation, I do tend to look at someone's mouth after a few seconds as eyes start to become uncomfortable. Until a few months ago, I was not even aware I was doing this!

Sincerely,
Matthew
