Despite the media painting Anders Behring Breivik as an unbalanced individual with traits of madness the reality is far different.

Anders Breveik did well in school, his friends and classmates considered him completely normal. He is a well presented, university educated individual with a business degree and a highly successful millionaire businessman. Prior to the shooting he would otherwise have been considered an exceptional individual.

I suggest people get a chance, they should read Harvard Professor William Goldhagen's Hitler's Willing Executioners". The book delves into the mind of the ordinary German leading up to the Nazi holocaust,

Thousands of middle class Germans, Ukrainians and Latvians including professionals, doctors, lawyers, engineers voluntarily joined the Nazi militia involved in mass killings of Jews in eastern Europe. These were intelligent, family loving ordinary people who had no reason to be killers and sought to join militia voluntarily rather than do clerical work.

The take home message is ordinary people can be killers given unusual situational factors and circumstances. The current climate in Europe over immigration and islamophobia will likely create more Breviks, the question is what are the tell tale signs that somebody is going down this path?

Maybe not exceptional but good looking, popular, intelligent, successful etc etc in other words, a successful individual by society's standards. Makes you wonder how many people are involved in the right wing ideologically extremist groups? Maybe not the lunatics but normal people like this guy.

It was like that when the Nazis came to power. The Nazis were not the madmen. Rather, they were the everyman, like this Breivik.

Counting magazines and books hours read? Then publishing these details?

Sounds kinda aspie to me? Probably also a bizarre Oedipus issue with mum?

I remember reading how an older women is good for an aspie male, as she is more prepared to coach him through life and be there for him. Much of Breviks higher functioning may be due to a 100% present single mum who soberly and intelligently raised him very proficiently, to a point...

Then this could all be speculative garbage on my part

The 32-year-old spent the first year of his life in London, where his father Jen Breivik was stationed at the Norwegian embassy.

The older Mr Breivik already had three children when he met Anders's mother, Wenche Behring. Their son was born in February 1979, but within a year they had split up with Anders and his mother returning to Oslo while his father stayed behind in London.

Mr Breivik soon married again and moved to Paris, where his young son would visit during school holidays. But as the years went progressed the visits became less frequent and by the time the teenager was 15, it seems they had lost contact altogether.

The absent father is a theme that Anders returned to repeatedly in his rambling 1,500 page manifesto.

"I have not spoken to my father since he isolated himself when I was 15 – he was not very happy about my graffiti phase from 13 to 16.


"He has four children but has cut contact with all of them. So it is pretty clear whose fault that was.

"I tried contacting him five years ago but he said he was not mentally prepared for a reunion."

Speaking outside his home in the south of France, Mr Breivik expressed his shock at the killings and how extreme his estranged son had become.

"I view this atrocity with absolute horror," he told reporters. This morning his house was being searched teams of French gendarmes.

Anders grew up sharing a rented flat with his mother, their relationship forced even closer after his older stepsister Elisabeth moved to California.

His diary reveals an oddly conflicted of his mother – at once fond of her and furious at the liberal upbringing she gave him.

He wrote: "I do not approve of the super-liberal, matriarchal upbringing as it completely lacked discipline and has contributed to feminise me to a certain degree."

Anders appears to have had few relationships and records being teased by friends for living with his mother and not having a girlfriend.

His writing reveals an occasional puritanism, with entries criticising his sister for having too many sexual partners and describing his mother's new husband as a "primitive sexual beast".

Despite his apparent disgust, he repeatedly mentions the prospect of hiring prostitutes in the run-up to his mission

Of his stepmother Tove, he writes she was "very intelligent" but obviously a "traitor".

"Although I care for her a great deal, I wouldn’t hold it against the KT (Knights Templar) if she was executed during an attack," he wrote.

At the Daily Beast, Michele Goldberg wrote recently about the misogyny of Norwegian mass murderer Anders Breivik, suggesting that “Breivik’s hatred of women rivals his hatred of Islam, and is intimately linked to it.” And indeed, Breivik’s 1,500-page manifesto is thick with references to how feminism is destroying Western culture. (It is also thick with references to the scourge of Sex and the City.) Breivik writes that within the “destructive and suicidal ‘Sex and the City’ lifestyle … men are not men anymore, but metro sexual and emotional beings that are there to serve the purpose as a never-criticising soul mate to the new age feminist woman goddess.” The argument, followed to its illogical extreme, is that by emasculating men, feminists make it easier for Muslim extremists to take over.

Resentment of women and yearning for a mythic sort of masculinity is not unique to Breivik among mass murderers. As others have pointed out, it’s a fairly common characteristic of these men (and they’re usually men), including Jared Lee Loughner (author of a post arguing that college women enjoy being raped); Cho Seung-Hui, who stalked women before his massacre at Virginia Tech; George Sodini, who killed and wounded several women after complaining the opposite sex wasn't attracted to him; and Amish schoolhouse murderer Charles Carl Roberts IV, who specifically targeted girls. Former prison psychiatrist James Gilligan told the New York Times some years ago that for his patients, “an underlying factor that is virtually always present to one degree or another is a feeling that one has to prove one’s manhood, and that the way to do that, to gain the respect that has been lost, is to commit a violent act.” Misogyny and homophobia are almost always part of this package.

Breivik’s self-portrait, as revealed by his manifesto, is – I want to say pathetic, but pathos conjures sympathy, and Breivik doesn’t warrant any. The man who would later kill 76 people by bomb and gun paints a portrait of future glory and acclaim that could not contrast more with his circumstances when planning the massacre. He writes about how he’s living with his mom, watching the TV show Dexter (“quite hilarious”), and fielding suggestions from his sister that he find a girlfriend. (“I do get the occasional lead,” Breivik assures his audience at one point, especially now "as I'm fit like hell." But “I’m trying to avoid relationships as it would only complicate my plans and it may jeopardize my operation.”) He says some friends think he is gay, which is also "quite hilarious, as I am 100% hetero." He defends his living situation as a necessary sacrifice to save funds for his “operation.” “Sure, some people will think you are a freak for living with your parents at the age of 31 but this is irrelevant for a Justiciar Knight,” Breivik writes, referencing the organization, “The Knights Templar Europe,” which he may or may not have made up.

Breivik complains about how his “super-liberal, matriarchal upbringing” served to “feminise me to a certain degree.” He sees the “feminisation” of culture everywhere, lamenting that modern men spend so much time worrying about their clothes and their colognes, and claiming that sexual harassment charges are used to “keep men in line.” He also attempts to humiliate his mother and sister by detailing what he says are the STDs contracted by them. He claims that their shoddy morals have “shamed me.” (His stepfather, the one who Breivik claims gave his mother herpes, gets no blame. He is pronounced “likable.”)

Reading this manuscript, you get the sense that sources of shame were everywhere inside Breivik’s twisted mind: In the uppity behavior of Western women, in the supposed conspiracy of Muslim extremists, in the way that Western culture had allowed itself to be taken over, he believed, by “cultural Marxism.” In his 1997 book Violence, Gilligan suggests that “the patriarchal code of honor and shame generates and obligates male violence.” And indeed, Breivik appears to have been obsessed with manliness and with the notion that he might be falling short. He’d been reportedly bullied as a kid. He so worried about his appearance that one friend claims he had plastic surgery. He is said to have amassed a good deal of money in the stock market – and then lost at least half of it. His writings reveal how much he wished to be vindicated, to be seen not as a failed man but as a “warrior.” In a few decades, he imagined, thanks in part to his own work, a new “cultural conservative world order” would be established in Europe. “They may physically kill a Justiciar Knight, but your name will be remembered for centuries,” Breivik wrote.

In fact, what people will remember Breivik for is his violence. The rest is delusion and cliché.

The Oslo killer said he had no time for girlfriends but was saving a bottle of vintage wine and €2,000 to spend on two high-class prostitutes before his mission, his diary reveals.

Breivik wrote in November last year: "As for girlfriends; I do get the occasional lead, or the occasional girl making a move, especially now a day [sic] as I'm fit like hell and feel great. But I'm trying to avoid relationships as it would only complicate my plans and it may jeopardize my operation."

In a diary he published on the internet as he set off for his attacks in Norway, he said he did not feel comfortable manipulating girls into one night stands, any more, although he claimed to have had sex with two girls in Prague as he tried and failed to buy guns on the black market in August last year.

"Human males are imperfect by default as they are plagued by their biological needs," he wrote. "Nevertheless, screwing around outside of marriage is after all a relatively small sin compared to the huge amounts of grace I am about to generate with my martyrdom operation and it is essential that you do what is required to keep moral and motivation at a high level."

Breivik said he had reserved 2000 Euros which "I intend to spend on a high quality model escort girl one week prior to execution of the mission.... It will contribute to ease my mind as I imagine I will get tense and very nervous. It is easier to face death if you know you are biologically, mentally and spiritually at ease."

The killer also said he had been saving three bottles of Château Kirwan 1979, a French red wine, which he had purchased at an auction with the intention of enjoying them at a very special occasion.

amazing research guys.

i think there's something very profound here. all those who dismiss him as a "lunatic" are missing the point.. this guy is just an edge case.. but if we can solve these socialization issues early on, we can help these guys before this stuff turns into a real problem
