I'd have gotten really upset at the test giver for implying that I'd flip the tortoise onto its back and argued at that point how I'd never do that. Up until that point I'd be able to keep control of the fact it was a theoretical construct because I could imagine myself walking in a desert and finding a tortoise, but as soon as someone claimed I'd do something in the theoretical situation that I couldn't imagine myself doing, it'd be broken. That one in particular would bother me a lot.

What does that have to do with a census? I'm confused. I thought they just wanted to know how many people lived in your house and genders and ages and stuff like that. I don't even get the point of that question. Why would I help the turtle by flipping it back over if I'm the one that flipped it over in the first place? That doesn't sound like a census question. That sounds like some vague psychological test given by a therapist for unknown reason. I don't even know what it means or what the "right" answer is.

I live in the back of an apartment building so I nearly never have census takers or anyone else randomly knocking on my door.

If it's designed to "provoke an emotioal response" I don't show emotions a lot and tend to be pretty emotionless over fictional stories because they aren't real. That is to my benefit as I can watch all kinds of horror movies without getting too "scared" or "grossed out" or whatever to watch them. I've had people tell me certain movies were "so scary" and I'd watch them and be like "meh, that wasn't scary at all".

PseudointellectualHorse was quoting the Voight-Kampff test scene in the film Blade Runner. It's a test of empathy.

It's good that you don't get scared watching horror movies. I startle very easily.

So that's why I was thinking "but they're acting like in Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?", I missed that it wasn't someone doing that (and I could see people doing that to me, because they know how I feel like I'd be tested as an Android and I know enough people who've read the book).

I never saw "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" or "Blade Runner".

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is a book by Philip K. Dick. Blade Runner is the movie loosely based on the book.

Fantasy: 21 Yeah, that's me. I've always had a hard time with that "lack of imagination" theory.
Empathic Concern: 20 I guess I can relate to people who are taken advantage of and unfairly treated. I don't mean that to be quite as pathetic as it sounds, though! :)
Perspective Taking: 15 This is something I've worked hard on, though. I may not be great at it, but I try.
Personal Distress: 9 I think that this is because I've always tried to be the " cool head" in an emergency; someone needs to be when everyone else around is freaking out. My emotions kind of shut off, my logical brain really kicks in-- could partially be from being a mom, too.

Fantasy: 25
Empathic Concern: 17
Perspective Taking: 12
Personal Distress: 28

Not surprised at all that I scored higher than average on "fantasy" and "personal distress" - I have always had a special bond with fiction, getting highly emotionally involved with it and feeling like the characters were my friends (to the point of actually having them as imaginary friends). I also overreact to everything, and my family always jokes that I would be the absolute worst person to have around in an emergency.

However, I am a bit saddened that I scored low on "empathic concern" and "perspective taking". That probably makes me look like a closed-minded person who doesn't really care about others.

PT = perspective-taking scale 5
FS = fantasy scale 4
EC = empathic concern scale 12
PD = personal distress scale 24

PT and FS being so low isnt surprising, I have trouble imagining things from someone elses perspective, whenever I try to I get all paranoid and I end up twisting everything in my head. I badly wish I had better TOM. My poor TOM plus my paranoia gets me into do much trouble. My EC was higher then I anticipated, I feel for people when I can see there having a hard time as long as I see them as "safe" people. If Im intimidated by them and think they hate me I dont have an ounce of empathy for them. And my PD is very high, no surprise I freak out a lot.

I wish my PD would go down and my PT and FS would come up, my life would be so much better.

Perspective Taking: 16
Empathetic Concern: 26
Fantasy: 21
Personal Distress: 15

For hypothetical situations my perspective taking is good. It's not as good with people who deeply irritate me.

As far as personal distress goes, in a tragedy or extreme emergency situation I can go numb and just work on adrenalin. From experience I don't panic. Then again, I can get worked up into a rage over other things, like injustice, discrimination, abuse, bullying, etc... In general, natural tragedies don't distress me as much as human created tragedies.

While on another Empathy Quotient test, I got 7/80 points, well below average.

I almost gave up on this stupid test. I hate written test like this because I had a hard time separating the categories by the questions. They should have made the questions separate sheets and did 7.

So like this PT:

1-7

Next page FS:

1-7

But noooo instead they had to make this diffcult. I had to bold and highlight to be able to separate them out.

Anyway my results:

PT= 12
PD= 16
FS= 31
EC= 10

I'm a fan of the Voight-Kampff test too.

It's quite accurate in determining the empathetic state of a genuine human.

I'm apparently an android.

I found it frustrating. I flipped the A and E values so I had to switch it when adding up my score at the end. And i kept loosing track of where I was.I ended up not counting 2 somehow. I got high Fantasy, the Personal distress was around 10 and the others were low

My scores:

PT= 15
FS=21
EC=16
PD= 21

Not sure what this all means. I found the test a little difficult to score.
