I do not agree with that statement, i can only speak for myself that i do not feel impaired by aspergers overall. Sure i have social problems but that is balanced out by the things i like about myself that aspergers helped with. Independent thinker, apreciation for things that most people do not give a f**k about, thirst for knowledge etc, naturally i am a very kind person towards anyone and everything (im not as kind to people as i could be right now, i act like a cold bastard most of the time but thats just what happens to aspies who see their good intentions bare no fruit). The social aspect does not have a big effect on my mood because i am ignorant to the social faux pas i make.

In the DSM-IV criteria, it says:

Quote:
(III) The disturbance causes clinically significant impairments in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.

If it doesn't impair you, you don't have it. That doesn't mean you don't have a brain that works more like autistic people's brains or that you can't identify with autistic people. It doesn't even mean you can't call yourself an Aspie.

Or I guess you could go to the ICD-10 criteria, which has no requirement for impairments, but I don't know how diagnosis based on the ICD-10 criteria is handled.

As far as it goes - and this isn't aimed at you - it strikes me as a bit dodgy for people to diagnose themselves with Asperger's Syndrome and then try to define it as "not impairing" or "not a disability." I suspect the majority of people diagnosed with it actually do experience some degree of disability and impairment due to AS.

I guess as long as people stick to speaking for themselves - as you did - it's probably not a thing. It's the sweeping statements that are problematic.

If it does not impair you significantly then the DSM says you don't have it. DSM is just a guidebook. If i where to go in for a diagnosis right now i would not be able to get one based on DSM, that does not mean a expert on autism wouldn't immediately recognize me as autistic. I did have my share of issues related to aspergers which made me suicidal but at this point i feel better equiped to deal with anything than ever. Of course i have troubles in some social situations more then the average person but not to a significant degree that i would call it impaired. I actually think im better equiped now to handle certain things then most people who are not on the spectrum and/or did not have these experiences of social impairment at some point in their life.

I was't planning on making the post you quoted, it was not finished but the browser posted it for me.

MTV generations syndrome syndrome :

Bart: Nothing you say can upset us, we're the MTV generation.
Lisa: We feel neither highs nor lows.
Homer: Really, what's it like?
Lisa (shrugs): Meh...

Though I did cry last night after one of those schmaltzy feel good commercial network programs who's title escapes me a sheep befriends a baby elephant the sheep becomes sick though lucky survives ! latter on the baby elephant died ruptured something ? it was so sad, I cried. :(

I was reminded of the irrationality of Nt's the park ranger was "amazed" the sheep could form such a bond and god forbid had a awesome personalty who would have thank ? Bet that ranger latter that night goes on and has a lamb stew (unbelievable) thankfully Lisa Simpson (smartest Springfield resident) has an epiphany when she sees a lamb at a reserve she would I supppose smart people and compassionate people don't put their minor interests (please a palate) over the major interests of animals (stay alive and be pain free)

I think this crying episode coincided with the death of my babies recently my cocateail and budgerigar  theirs a lesson to be learned here never feed nuts to a bird they died of I suspect aflatoxins (fungi on nuts ) I took the other to the vet and she's all a OK :D and my vet seems to think I'm doing something right. :D

He seems to think it's unethical bird companies add nuts to bird mix , for the same reasons McDonald's add lots of salt and sugar to their food and target young children my vet seems to think nuts is akin to giving a child a doughnut I seriously knew to limit nuts nuts , which he confirmed I did though he suspects over 11 years (fat) and a slighlty off nut (macadamia) and it was alll over red rover . 11 years ain't a bad effort for a cockateil and a great one for a budgie (which usually only live 6 - 8 years.)

Dont feed bird nuts

It should have a name that doesn't make it so fun for people to twist it into something derogatory. The first time I saw that used in an article to refer to people who diagnosed themselves, my opinion of the writer went down considerably.

Just learn to speak it correctly and your problem should be solved. Thank God I don't live in US and everybody spells it ah-spair-ger. It's a German name and should be spoken German. I wouldn't like to hear my name in pejorative English version.

Oh cool, I hadn't noticed this thread. I was wondering if NorwichAspie was a liar and a troll based on his "cremation is teh wurks of Satan" thread - well, okay, I was almost certain, but y'know how awful it is to call an obvious troll a troll - but now I've seen this thread, I'm happy. A silly little trolling troll he is.

Actually this one and variations on it has popped up several times already, so you're being a bit naughty.

LOL!.. Funny post. I agree! The symptoms and the name sucks! The symptoms are one thing; however, the name ought to be replaced..

Hey, speak for yourself, I got a girlfriend...

How about we don't call it a syndrome at all because that's not what it is? I tried to explain to a friend the other day that I have aspergers, and he just kept arguing with me, telling me I'm "normal." First off, there's no such thing as "normal." Secondly, I'm far from what is considered "normal." Third, I never said there was anything wrong with me. I don't consider aspergers some mental deficiency because it isn't. But regardless of what I try to tell him, he just doesn't get what I'm saying, and he insists I'm just "introverted." He also said that basically every problem I have interacting with people on a daily basis is "something that everybody deals with." Bah! whatever... This same person also said years ago that somehow motocross(riding a dirtbike) is more strenuous than wrestling. So what he says doesn't mean much to me. However, it does still bother me a bit that he just writes it off like it's nothing. Oh yeah, he also said that what makes people "unsocial" and unable to pick up on social cues and stuff is all determined by how you were raised...
